hi all here's part 49 from the second series from my "Fat lad on world tour" in this sunday bonus video i a beautiful camp spot and sleepy town of Malabrigo then on to Huaca Esquivel .
The word huaca , waca or guaca (from the Quechua word wak'a ) designated all the fundamental Inca sacred things : sanctuaries, idols, temples, tombs, mummies, sacred places, animals, those stars from which the aillus , or clans, believed they descended, their own ancestors, including the main deities, the Sun and the Moon , which were venerated through different ceremonies.
The Inca imperial soldiers marched to war formed by squadrons according to their community of origin and therefore (like the Romans) totems that represented their respective huaca (the lightning bolt, the condor, the hill, the rainbow (*) etc.), therefore one of the most terrible ways to punish very rebellious peoples was precisely the destruction of their huacas and mummies, thus breaking the ties that held that community together; For the same reason, when a kingdom of respect was conquered in which the same culture and Andean worldview was recognized, the defeated king (or an allied king in good faith) was recognized and taken with all honors to the city of Cuzco , where upon his death his mummy became part of and lived spiritually as a whole with the Navel of the World , hence the sacred status of the imperial city as the largest Andean religious center, because in this way the sacred Living Huaca (the sinchi, curaca or Capac -chief, feudal lord or king-), descendant of the first huaca, only established a new point of worship. Such is the case of the Chimú Cápac or Chimú King (descendant of the Lord of Sipán ) and of the kings Lupaca and Zapana of the two Collas (Aymara) Kingdoms of the Altiplano, one defeated, the other allied.
This concept originates from the culture that the Inca Empire imposed on all its domains in South America. The Incas believed that the Inca Túpac Yupanqui could speak with the wakas , and through them he knew about past and future events, including the arrival of the Spanish in America.
According to pre-Hispanic tradition, the huacas have their own personality and are part of the local pantheons of the Inca and pre-Inca cultures along with the other "major Andean" deities - such as Huiracocha , Pachacamac or Pariacaca .
The close relationship between the Andean man and the huacas can be verified by the large number that are scattered in the Tawantinsuyu , the same ones that, in some cases, are still the object of veneration today.
As a religious center, the huacas are also famous for being the place where offerings were deposited. For this reason they suffered several depredations during the first years of the Spanish conquest of America ( 16th century ), both for their fame of containing treasures, and for being the center of local religiosity in the provinces that formed the Tahuantinsuyu
In the central Andes of the territory of present-day Peru , it was the place from where, according to Inca mythology, the first couple that formed each Andean community ( aillu ) came out after the universal flood, according to the mandate of Apu Kon Ticci Viracocha (in Quechua: Apu Qun Tiqzi Wiraqucha), The Maker , who determined a time and place where they should reemerge in order to repopulate the earth and be the parents of the different Andean nations or communities ( Manco Capac and Mama Ocllo were one of these couples). It is this place of origin (which could be a cave, a tree, the site where lightning struck, a hill, a mine, a lake, etc.) where the most prosperous aillus used to build their respective shrines of adobe (coast), stone (mountain range) or on an island (lake), places that by extension were also known as huacas by the Spanish.
Also by order of Huiracocha, these first founding couples of the aillu returned to the state in which they left after their death and became the protective deities ( apus ) of the community to whom they were venerated.
According to a modern, though disputed, eclectic view of anthropology, the custom of worship of the "tutelary huaca" and the ancestors would have survived to this day, buried in the devotional practices promoted in its replacement by the Catholic Church, during evangelization and after the extirpation of idolatries.
