Not really internet culture, this isn’t unique to online, just humanity in general. The internet just changed how it happens. The ability to disregard someone’s emotions for any reason is a problem that has existed throughout human history, genocides, ethnic cleanings, bigotry, all caused by the fundamental willingness to see people as less than human. Not to compare severity, a few fat jokes and the holocaust aren’t the same, but the underlying issue is similar and honest to god, even the jokes can be the start to a terrible trend. Like this current far right wave we have seen in real life politics has its origins in the “it’s just a joke” types. The kinds of people making jokes about, for example, trans people back in the 2010 are now either actively gunning for their eradication or just normal people now. That variance makes this a difficult issue to solve, it’s why we need to at least be someone self reflective about the jokes we make. You don’t have to be this big philosopher who thinks in an acedemic debate hall all day, just ask why you’re inclined to make the jokes you make and make sure it’s not rooted in either an incorrect or hateful notion.
