@Ajehy4 жыл бұрын
Interesting note: this game series is more horrific the more you know about Shinto. To put it in extremely rough and broad terms, Shinto is concerned with purity, balance and life. All these dark, deadly rituals that involve spilling blood and mutilating people while still using Shinto imagery? It’s like preforming a human sacrifice by stabbing someone with a sharpened cross and invoking Jesus. By contrast, the protagonists preform a much more proper form of the religion, appeasing angry spirits and generally trying to set things back into balance... as well as some major Buddhist influence with the exorcism angle.
@ExValeFor4 жыл бұрын
nah human sacrifice with a sharpened cross sounds about right for abrahamic religions
@Ajehy4 жыл бұрын
@@ExValeFor - I was using an example more of my readers would likely know, but just like in FF, the more you know about the religion the worse it is. Sacrificial animals, particularly lambs, have a long tradition in Judaism (not people though, don't believe the Blood Libel madness), and Jesus is called "the Lamb of God" because he died for the sins of humanity. He is literally the last sacrifice, you never need to make another one. Doing a human sacrifice in his name is backwards and nonsensical to most believers with a brain who have actually read the Bible. Now, I know there's probably some psychos out there who would do this. People use religion to justify all kinds of horrible things, regardless of the faith's actual teachings. The point is just that there are symbols that are more likely to disturb people based on cultural and religious background.
@RePhantomz3 жыл бұрын
@@ExValeFor Pinning sacrifice only to abrahamic based religion is rather short sighted. ironically human sacrifice is more wide spread then you think. From aghori hinduism sect practice, the recorded ritual of rus viking burial, mayan sacrifices, human sacrifice in celt, hitobashira in shinto, and tumbal (similar to hitobashira) practiced in south east asia, etc.
@SonofSethoitae3 жыл бұрын
The exorcism is particularly Buddhist, the Camera Obscura uses Siddham mantras to exorcise ghosts, probably from either Tendai or Shingon Buddhism. Not sure which mantra exactly though.
@raphaelledesma93933 жыл бұрын
Indeed it seems strange to me now that you mentioned it. Shintoism and Buddhism which are Japan’s major religious influences don’t typically do human sacrifices. Shintoism’s rituals focus on purity as you said and they invoke the use of water, salt?, ropes as barriers. These rituals surely would be anathema to Shinto sensibilities? Ah btw, the Genesis story where Abraham was about to sacrifice his son while God at the last minute stopped him was supposedly meant to be a sort of prohibition against human sacrifice which the contemporaries of the Jews supposedly did. I’m unsure if you know the Wicker Man, it’s a film from the 70s where a devout Christian policeman goes to an isolated pagan island to find a missing girl. In the end, he was set up to be the human sacrifice for the island’s failing produce and he rightfully calls it out as murder.

I actually have a funny story about how Fatal Frame 2 scared me the most any video game ever has. I was playing FF2 with my friend on Xbox around 15 years ago. It was about midnight. I had gotten to a part where I could explore the dead village and had gotten lost. I came across a bridge that connected between two houses. One of the houses was locked at this time so I was basically lost and didn't know where to go. I took out the camera to look around and see if there was any hints. After about a minute of looking around, my controller shakes violently, a blaring, distorted, low tone becomes nearly deafening loud and suddenly, a ghost of a woman with a twisted neck appeared right in front of me and killed me near instantly (I was low on health). My friend and I screamed. My dad runs out with his gun, scared for our lives. He sees us playing a video game and immediately demands us both to go to bed at this point. Good times lol

So if the person is laid out, the blood represents the limbs that are torn off, and it's why it also (mostly) looks like those limbs/parts aren't there. Sorry if this was explained already but seriously there are so many comments and I'm too attention deficit to bother with that. Well I believe in ghosts so I'm gonna ignore that nonsense, but I believe the "Based on a true story" thing is referring to the fact that the mansion is real and the game's mythology is, I think, actual myths and legends surrounding it.

I'm pretty sure the copy of this game I owned was haunted. When I brought it home, I never opened it until the next day when my friend was over. So imagine my surprise when I open the case and it's empty, then my friend pointed to my ps2 saying "Hey, what's that?" To which I see Fatal Frame's disc sitting in my ps2. My immediate reaction was to hurl the case across the room and avoid my copy of the game like the plague.

That voice acting is for sure the way it is because native japanese actors were used. I'm guessing, but the slow delivery seems to heavily indicate this being the reason.

When it comes time to review "Fatal Frame 2", are you going to include the Wii remake as well? I'm also surprised you didn't mention the XBox version of this game, as well as the endings and how they are obtained. (Dependent on your gameplay difficulty setting, for this one and number two.)

So happy to see you reviewing my favorite survival horror series! The first game in the series is legit the only horror game I have ever played which I then had trouble sleeping after playing it, so it made me smile when you mentioned how it actually scared you, too. :) Also, if you beat the game on Hard mode, you get a different ending where Mafuyu actually leaves with you, but this "good ending" isn't the canon one.

I think you'll like the later ones much better than the first one. Fatal Frame 3 is my personal favorite and I'm excited to see your thoughts on it. Also, you might want to go back and refresh your self about Miku and her storyline about her mom. It'll make sense once you play 2.
