What makes the separation anxiety from Mayu and Sae worse is that it's confirmed both girls actually fell *on purpose* just because they didn't wanna be left behind by their respective twin. Sure, Mayu didn't plan to get a bent knee in the process, but chained Mio to her out of guilt... not to mention how it's sort of implied that *Mayu was HAPPY that Mio ended up blind* and therefore being chained to each other for good in that one ending (or she simply broke out of her separation anxiety and decided to step up as the elder twin she's supposed to act like I dunno). Sae hoped for Yae to go back for her, get caught and complete the ritual... buuuut we all know how that went because of Yae getting lost in the woods. Siblings, whatever separation anxiety issues you have towards each other: *Please work them out. Don't do shit like Mayu and Sae did.*

Fun fact: Yae & Sae are actually the ancestors for Miku the protagonist of the first game. Why Yae’s the great great grandmother of Miku. After noticing her sister didn’t follow her she went back to the gate of the village and noticed it was gone. Her memories along with it apparently. The apprentice of the folklorist came back and saw Yae crying at the gate. He decided to take her back to his village and later on they got married. Later after having their daughter, they went to the mansion in the first game and they are their daughter that went missing is actually Miku’s Grandmother. Also yeah Mio & Mayu in the Nintendo Wii remake do look older because they were aged up. In the original the twins were 15 while in the remake there were aged up to 17.

Actually FF2 is tied into the first game. The folklorist and his assistant seen in flashbacks are mentioned in various notes in the first game. The twin that escaped, Yae is the ghost seen hanging from the tree in the courtyard in the first game (she married the folklorist's assistant) and they are the family that moved into Himuro mansion prior to the event that led Takamine and his crew to their exploration. Yae is also the Grandmother of Miku and Mafuyu, as it is her daughter that was the only survivor of ghosts that took her family. She (Yae's daughter) is also mentioned in various notes in the first game as being the girl that was rescued after she was found wandering alone in the mountains. The games are very connected. That is the great thing about them. They assume the audience is capable of piecing these clues together without holding you by the hand.

There is a slight connection to Fatal Frame 1 and 2; in Fatal frame 1 there is a ghost called the hanging woman, she is wife and mother of the folklorist that went to the Himuro manor. She is actually Yae who escaped with the Folklorist assistant from 2. He was the one who wanted to help the twins escape. However since Yae was the only one that escaped , she had a fragile mentality. They got married and had Miku’s great grandmother(? Not sure if it was great or just grandmother) who was also the only child and survivor of the himuro manor found in the woods

Yae marries Ryozo Munakata, they have a daughter Mikoto, then Yae hung herself in grief for almost losing her daughter and the other children dying, Ryozo went to try and stop the evil in the himuro mansion with the Holy mirror, but he ended up dead. Mikoto got taken in by a Mr.Hinasaki, got married to an unknown man, and had a daughter Miyuki, Miyuki then married Masato Hinasaki, her teacher, and had Miku and Mafuyu, so Yae Munakata nee Kurosawa is the protagonists of the first Fatal Frame's great grandmother.

Something to point out...the ritual is meant to happen to twins around fifteen years old. In the original game, Mio and Mayu look maybe between ten and twelve. The Wii version makes them look older and defined and even closer to resembling Yae and Sae. Also I just want to point out (SPOILERS) Still reading? Okay. The game actually lets the player know Sae PURPOSELY tripped and got left behind because she was willing to die and "become one with Yae". She and Yae had the same promise Mio and Mayu had to always be together so Sae thought Yae would come back to the village and fulfill that promise and finish the ritual. And of course, Yae didn't. Sae was actually placed back in seclusion many days before the ritual and the game lets you find their diaries. Reading them shows their thoughts on the ritual and how Yae thought the whole thing was barbaric and unnecessary and Sae being the only one to write anything at all near the end because Yae was gone. The two children on the cover are Azami and Akane, twins much younger than 15 but were forced to do the ritual because a previous one failed (the one involving the young man who helped Yae and Sae escape and his twin). The ritual fails if the twins are too attached to each other or, in the young girls' case, too young and distressed by the whole thing. The repentance happens if the ritual fails too many times in a row, which is what happened when it was Yae and Sae's turn. Loved the video. I'm a horror fan but I'm such a wimp when it comes to playing horror games. I did try to suck it up and play this game and I did finish it. Though while I did enjoy it, I'm too wimpy to consider replaying it.

Everything is correct except for the Kiryu twins. Azami and Akane were both actually dead at least before Mutsuki and Itsuki's ritual. They had to do it so young because there were no other twins at the time, or it could have been either the Osaka twins from the manga and cameo in 3 or Miss Kurenai who became a remaining just from being the only twin alive when she was born during a ritual as those two pair of twins were the only ones with white haired Remainings that was not from Mutsuki and Itsuki's ritual.

Spoilers: Yae and the Folklorist are the only connecting characters here that connect this game and the first one. Yae actually does escape the village, but she ends up losing her memories, when she's found by Ryozo Munakata (Folklorist apprentice at the time I believe, also Itsuki's childhood friend, etc), the village is disappears. Time goes by, Ryozo having fulfilled a part of his promise to Itsuki in protecting Yae, becoming a full blown Folklorist like his dead teacher that became the Kusabi, marrying Yae, then having a child with her named Mikoto, they eventually end up moving to the Himuro Mansion, which eventfully screws them both over. Mikoto ends up going missing one day due to the good spirit of Kirie (Girl Pointing) leading her away, so she doesn't end up killed like her three friends by the long armed ghost. Yae commits suicide, sadly the same way her twin dies by hanging herself (the villagers hanged Sae as a sacrifice) and Ryozo ends up dying due to investigating the dark history of the mansion, most likely being killed by the evil spirit of Kirie herself. The curse upon the mansion sadly keeps their spirits there, so you do end up having to exorcise them, because they became hostile ghosts. So sadly enough they escaped one dark cursed village, where only hostile spirits remain to end up dying in a similar situation, where they end up becoming hostile ghosts cursed by the mansion, like the curse on All God's Village turning all it's ghostly dead inhabitants into hostile ghosts (except Itsuki) like Yae's sister, Sae. Mikoto ends up having a good life after being found by officials, marries, has a kid, then that kid having a striking resemble to an adult Yae, the child is Miku and Mafuyu's mother, who also hangs herself in suicide. So Miku and Mafuyu are Yae's great grandchildren and Sae is their great aunt or something. Also I like to mention, when Yae escaped the village, a part of her spirit detached itself, leaving her with no memories, it's theorized and shown in the Perfect ending, that this part of Yae possesses Mio, but it's not made clear until that ending.

Oh god the ghost of Sae in your doorway actually made my stomach turn. Well done editing sir! This is definitely my favorite out of the series. It may sound tedious, but there are some ghosts you have to actually go looking for that only appear in certain areas at certain times, but they are worth it when you find them. For example, heading near the Kiryuu house I believe there is a camera angle that focuses on an empty building and if you get the timing right a pair of disembodied legs will walk across the floor of said building. It's very creepy to see, but once again worth finding!

There is actually a direct plot line between this game and the first, though it's easy to miss (being more of an easter-egg for those who really comb through the notes and such to figure out): The Yae in this game is the same one as the Yae in the first game (the mother who hung herself), and thus also the great-grandmother of Miku. Despite getting away she still ended up dying the same way as her sister.

I am writing about it now because a few reviewers of this game have cut in on it, after which they drove hard after this game.

Apparently the logic for the camera obscura being different in each game is that the guy who originally made it made a fuck ton of different prototype camera obscura's and these are scattered throughout japan as either collectors items or gathering dust in a haunted location when the owner karked it, which is why some of them have features that other's lack. It's never explained if there was any that technically made it out of the prototype stage but still, this is the reason behind all the different designs of the camera throughout the series for the record.

My guess is that the existence of ghosts is related to the spiritual/religious/philosophical worldview of a person. Strict materialists (those who believe that only that which is matter exists) would deny ghosts or souls. It's really funny because a lot of his opinions are exactly the same I have and I haven't seen many who think like this either. It's been a running joke between me and my cousin. We picked up the first game from the video store when we were teenagers and I normally don't find any movie or game scary. I found the first game terrifying, the ghosts and the vibe to it, not to mention the Homuro mansion just totally creeped me out. But he didn't find it creepy at all and he loved the puzzles. I couldn't finish it. But Crimson Butterfly I just loved, I love all of the fixed camera angles and the look of the ghosts I just find amazing but not scary. There was something more comforting about the village vibe than the mansion one to me (and like Nitro Rad said, Tachibana house is a pain!. The worst part of the game for me) and my cousin found the second game more terrifying and he couldn't play it (the puzzles were also too boring and easy for him). Once you learn about the lore aswell, I find the ghosts in II far more sad than in 1 or 3. Because how most of them are just terrified, trying to hide from this supernatural force. The one exception is the doll maker and how the spirit of his daughter went into one of the dolls, that was terrifying.

My rule was always to keep Type 7 on default, as it was better to use that to get point-pictures from random ghosts passing by, and only switched when ghosts were actively aggressive.

16:51 Just a teeny nitpick: It's left vague in how your script addressed it (so I'm not saying you got it WRONG), but Itsuki Tachibana, the Remaining twin with white hair, wasn't part of a ritual 10 years prior; he was part of a ritual that failed mere weeks or months before Yae and Sae were to be sacrificed. The ritual has the potential to fail if the twins love each other too much, and Itsuki and Mutsuki failed. Failure, of course, led the village to move on to the next-oldest set of twins -- Yae and Sae. If Itsuki and Mutsuki had succeeded, Yae and Sae (the entire village, actually) never would have had to go through what they did -- the village would have been set for the next decade, and by then Yae and Sae would have aged out of their role.

Rewatching: As a twin, this game really struck an emotional chord with me, especially how painful it would be to be split the way Yae and Sae were. Similarly to Mayu and to a lesser degree Mio, my twin sister and I get separation anxiety when apart, especially during times of duress. Thusly, Sae getting abandoned and left alone, condemned to a horrific death, eternal damnation, and eternal solitude, really got under our skin and stayed with us in a way most game narratives don't. It also particularly horrified my sister, who would be the one strangling me.

Personally, I prefer the Kasumi and Ayane costumes from the original release, since they're also a pair of sisters. They're even assigned based on the "true" ages of the two, with Mio getting the older sister's costume. Also, Yae is Miku and Mafuyu's mother. And the twins are descended from the camera's creator.

That disc loading exploit is hilarious. I know meta gaming like that isn't really accounted for in playtesting but I feel like that should've been caught earlier. At least it's for something that's unnecessary. Also that boss fight sequence was excellent. You channeled your inner AVGN there for a moment.

Fatal Frame 2 is definitely my favorite of the first 3 Fatal Frame games. I never got to try the fourth and fifth games so I can't say much there aside from watching someone else play them. Honestly though, I've played and beaten Fatal Frame 2 like eight times on all difficulties and I just love going back to it. I need to unlock the rest of the costumes. I took forever to finish the first game because it was so freaking difficult to complete near the end. There was never enough healing items and I was attacked by pain in the butt ghosts that frustrated me to the point of abandoning the game for a bit. I think, though, for me, that the scariest ghost that got me in Fatal Frame 2 was the ghost that screams as she falls from the ceiling. She appeared to me suddenly one time and it nearly gave me a heart attack.

Here’s a thing: Yae is Miku’s great-grandmother and the folklorist’s wife from the first game. After the events of 2, she forgot everything and married the folklorist. They then moved in to the Mansion. Their daughter found the camera, which drove Yae crazy. Their daughter then ran away, and was raised by another couple. (Which caused Yae to kill herself) Later she grew up and gave birth to Miku’s mom.

It is interesting how these two games are interconnected... Yae (the twin that escaped) is Mikus and Mafuyus ancestor, where as Mio and Mayu are descendants of Dr. Asou.
