I remember listening to Gaspard de la Nuit and not understanding it well at first (that was around 2015-2016). But it was so mysterious I got obsessed with it until I was able to get what it was all about and it is one of my favourite piano works to this day.

i was so confused as i despised this piece and found it to be quite eccentric, but the moment everything clicked and made sense, i saw everything there was to see

A perfect analysis of an absolutely beautiful piece! And also a mild cliffhanger.

Gaspard de la nuit was the first and only piece I ever heard that made me gasp and left me speechless. I wish I could hear it for the first time again. Looking forward to the analysis (I haven't watched the video yet)

Thank you for this treasure! I recently started listening to Ravel and searched an analysis of this piece, especially for the climax and I couldn't find any. Thank you very much, Henrik!

Thanks! I look even closer at the climax in part 2, coming next week.

simply magical. I can't think of another piece that makes quite the same atmosphere as this one. Scarbo next? nevermind. Just knowing that someone was daring enough to make a video essay about this piece is way way more than i can ever ask for. keep it up. and most importantly, thank you! I'm looking forward to the next part.

hehe yeah no Scarbo unfortunately. But Le Gibet is coming later in the summer.

Why no Scarbo though? Scarbo is such an interesting piece to analyse the harmony and overall experience and expression

Scarbo is also even harder than Ondine and Le Gibet. And kinda crazy! I'd love to see an analysis of it, though.

Ah another wonderful video analyst. Really enjoy your channel. Thank you. My real job in life is a film script writer so I am always seeing things laterally. I really cannot resist the way you lay out your background and your newfound dress code. If I did not know you and your previous video , I can picture Edward Snowdon working as an undertaker in Russia trying to sell a funeral service to an old lady. Sorry, just cannot resist it. It will make a really good comedy sketch.

Great stuff, thank you. Also if you know the jazz standard Giant steps, you can see that the chord progression is very similar to the culmination of Ondine (the B minor dramatic cry). Same chain of keys related by major 3rds preceded by their respective dominants, even the same key (apart from being minor instead of major)
@SonataSecrets
@SonataSecrets 3 жыл бұрын
Yes I'm aware of Giant steps, that's an interesting connection. I suppose in both cases they are going for harmonic leaps that are far away from the previous one.

I got hand cramps practicing Ondine and I gave up lol 😂
@SonataSecrets
@SonataSecrets 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it feels quite unconsiderable for the pianist at times. One shouldn't need too much tense hand motions to get the very soft sound he is going for, but it still takes an already quite developed technique to do just that i suppose...

@@SonataSecrets Yeah It's a little beyond me as I only have an ATCL. I think this piece is LTCL or FTCL level. I remember watching a video of Alice Sara Ott practicing that right hand part for Ondine. It was quite funny! =D Here's the video. She's one of my favourite interpreters of Satie/Ravel and Debussy. =) kzbin.info/www/bejne/l4TNlJqYpqmBbrc

Polyrhythm using the meter vs polyrhythm within the beat. Using the traditional 4 centers or appendages of the toe taping public i find more affinity with drummer's sense of real independence
@looney1023

Oooh I had no idea that the rhythmic texture change was a mistake this whole time? Does that apply to other moments in the piece like the split hand version in the 4/4 bar at 11:29, or just when the right hand is playing it alone?
