for real, i bet it was amazing to see a console port so close to the arcade, especially when compared to the genesis/snes ports of the time. the big beautiful characters, the CD audio... it's a system seller!!

Nice gameplay. This takes me back to when my first ever MK game was UMK3 on the SNES, and Trilogy on the PS1 the second one just a few days later. I played them with my brother and mother. By far, my favorite characters were the palette-swap ninjas; a bunch of characters being the same person, same costume, same movements, only with different colors was just so cool for me. Still, out of them all, I mostly liked Noob Saibot, the pitch black one. Over a few weeks, I started only playing Trilogy and left UMK3 behind, even forgetting about it. One day, the Trilogy disk broke, but when I went to buy another one with mom, we got the PS1 MK3 instead; starting it up, I found the menu really cool, but getting into the character selection with not a single ninja shocked me a bit. I hesitated to play it for a bit, but I did and really liked it. Still, sometimes I did think the ninjas were somehow hidden in the game, and kept messing around the settings to try and "unlock" them. 😅

@@rageman.09 i actually think it’s really interesting that MK3 is a largely ninja-free game, haha. i admire them for trying something different before bringing all the ninjas back for later iterations. Noob Saibot was my man because he could defeat the MKT cpu opponents like no one else could, haha. thank you for sharing your story!!

@@seldum_scene Hah, I do understand that the palette swaps get boring at some point, but as a little child I liked them so much. While playing UMK3/MKT back then, I liked to imagine that they were all a group, so they dressed alike and hid their identities under a mask, only distinguishing themselves from each other by the colors. Nonetheless, it's funny how MK3 lacked the ninjas, yet then Trilogy overdid their quantity. If you got 3 in MK1 and 5 in 2, you got 8 in Trilogy. 😆 And yes, Noob Saibot was the most broken in Trilogy, maybe only topped by Rain and his mind control orb which the AI did not recognize, so you could do infinites with it. That without counting the boss characters, of course. 🤭

Kids these days have NO idea how cool palette swapped ninjas was. It shows the creators had to be efficient with production and budget limitations, and make several characters out of one guy. So they put lots of heart and soul into "green ninja" and "purple ninja". Fun times.

Definitely wasn't a launch title anywhere in the world, but yes it was an early one. In the UK, we had a case shortage (PAL games had a unique CD case originally designed to house thick manuals for all the languages) as sales of games well exceeded expectations, so MK3 was first released in a cardboard case (along with Tekken and Warhawk) and that's more common than the normal cases, as by the time the normal cases were out, so was MK Trilogy! I'm planning on doing a video on the launch titles in the near future.

@@seldum_scene Yes and be quick, as they're only getting more expensive as more end up in long-term collector hands. We never got PS1 longboxes here, but we did for the 3DO. Our card PS1 ones were still CD case size and we also ended up with double cases (due to the shortages) even if the game had one CD. Apparently they were an anti-theft concept, as CD cases are too easy to hide in your pants! The downside is that our standard cases are fragile and can't be easily replaced now--unlike the US and Japanese games in ordinary CD cases.

I just bought this again to play on my PS2. Didnt look good and was almost unplayable with lag on my HDTV. Got an older 4:3 ratio LCD from back in the day and now it looks and plays great!

I have a soft spot for vanilla MK3. It had unique stuff like the Bank level, and a tighter character list that didn't completely go off the rails with a bazillion characters (that's good too, I'm just saying). Too bad it was only out for six months or so before UMK3 took its place.

yeah it feels more complete in a way, like every character had all of their moves. it bugged me how some UMK3 characters had placeholder fatalities, their animalities looked different, etc. Ermac didn't even get an animality until Trilogy!

@seldum3121 I had n64 and ps1 for mk4 and yes I can't help thinking mk4 is a 3d version of mk3 because of similar vibes and differences. Yes they were fun and enjoyable on ps1 because I think ps1 was the best of all.i did try mk4 on n64 was good. Mk trilogy is pretty much ultimate mk3. Why else the 16 bit umk3 and mk trilogy ps1 and n64 got released all around the same time in 96? I admit since I was like 14 years old when I got mk4 on ps1. I loved it as the best. Mk trilogy ps1 is awesome because you can fight as boss characters. I guess you can play boss characters on vanilla mk3 and mk2 the only thing is it might make your game crash I think because it's a risky thing.
