Looking back, I can't believe they pulled off a good movie and we didn't get something like they did with Street Fighter. They actually did it good and set up all the characters, then gave us one martial arts fight after the next. Exactly what you want in a Mortal Kombat movie.
@FriendZone753 ай бұрын
And they actually followed the story! Something many video game films failed to do for way too long.
@Tweezymane3 ай бұрын
Street Fighter was dead before it started. They overpaid a coked up Jean-Claude Van Damme wanting to make him the lead as Guile and aside from Raul Julia as Bison (only because his kids pushed him to do it since they were fans of the game), JCVDs casting hurt the rest of the casting and the production budget. It also didn’t help that Capcom, the game’s development team, fast tracked shooting the film. I think the execs for MK learned that lesson and did everything the opposite.
@shawziiz50313 ай бұрын
You know what, I just realized that we have two live action Street Fighter movie so far, and none of it has Ryu as the main hero. At least this 90s live action Mortal Kombat movies make Liu Kang as the main hero, unlike the recent Cole Young movie that screw up everything. Even live action Tekken and King of Fighters did make Jin and Kyo as the main hero even thought this two movie sucks so bad. I hope the upcoming live action Street Fighter movie finally give justice to Ryu. (I don't count Assassin's Fist since that was a web series, not a movie)

Fun fact about this movie. Kano's actor pulled such a good job on the character that they changed Kano's in-game backstory to match it. Originally Kano was supposed to be a Chinese crimeboss. But he became Austrialian after Trevor Goddard's appearance in this movie. And yeah, one of the more recent MK games actually cast Shang Tsung's actor from this movie to voice act Shang in game. And later games have had actors mimicking the same voice style. So this movie really left its mark on the franchise.

Even Christopher Lambert, which I doubt any of us really expected. (And that casting, possibly unintentionally, salvages an otherwise badly written early line. Liu Kang's calling him a beggar doesn't really scan with the clothes alone, but if you've heard of the stereotype in that era of the middle-age hippie who spends their savings traveling to the exotic East seeking spiritual enlightenment yet has no locally useful skills so ends up begging and basically being an annoyance to local society...)

@@mastery7901 Yeah they look great, it's just that they're maybe the most iconic characters from the video games, with a lot of story behind them, and in the movie they just come off as mid level henchmen. It might be just me, but I was always bothered with how unimportant they felt in the movie :) But as you said, they look good, and the movie is not meant to be taken very seriously, so in the end it's not important, the movie is a ton of fun and watching it in the theatres with my friend when it came out was an amazing experience, and I still love the movie to this day.

When they mention Liu being a descendant of Kung Lao, they're not talking about Kung Lao from the game. They're talking about "The great Kung Lao," who won the tournament 10 generations (500ish years) ago, also on outworlds 10th tournament at the time. Kung Lao from the game is named after that character. It was The Great Kung Lao's victory against Goro that saved the earth from outworld back then, which is why Goro and Shang Tsung were worried about Liu Kang. They'd already wasted 500 years just to lose against Lao back then, so if they choked on their tenth tournament again this time, Shao Khan was sure to be extra pissed because that's another 500 years wasted, and they'd need 500 years of nonstop victory AGAIN just to get that progress back for the third time. That's why Shang didn't want to chance fighting Liu and instead enlisted Sonya by baiting her with Kano. He wanted to cheat by guaranteeing his own chance at fighting someone he knew he could kill. Shang Tsung abducting Sonya was actually from the original story of the original MK2. Her getting abducted is what makes Jax join Liu and Johnny in the outworld tournament, making him playable in mk2. The fact that it fits the game continuity so well is what makes this movie so damn good. That and the casting.

- Kano was originally American, but Trevor Goddard was so good in this, he became Australian in the games (even though Goddard used a Cockney accent). - Raiden is played by Christopher Lambert, who is the star of Highlander, which is just as cheesy and fun as this movie, but also adds 80s silliness and Sean Connery. - There is a sequel, Annihilation, which frequently appears on lists of worst-ever sequels. And it's not "fun" bad. It's just bad. - The legendary theme was done by The Immortals, which was a side project of two members of Lords of Acid. They only ever did MK music. I once had this as my ring tone and would occasionally scare people as my phone screamed, MORTAL KOMBAAAAT! It's so good that they play it like seven times during the movie and it just doesn't get old. - Most of the non-Reptile CGI holds up decently for a movie that's approaching 30. I just love this movie. It knows what it is and leans into it. Everyone's having fun and it's infinitely rewatchable.

Hands down, one of the greatest video game adaptations ever. Paul W.S. Anderson's 2nd film and first Hollywood production. Highly anticipated for the end of summer 1995. Partly hyped by 2 mini-series; Blood & Thunder, Battlewave from Malibu Comics. Everything about the film was great with fight sequences, casting/cast chemistry, special effects, music, and even the signatures of the games (the first 3 installments anyway). Johnny Cage's story was originally the main premise of the game. Back when Jean-Claude Van Damme was approached to be the JC character in the game, but turned it down and returned 30 years later to be in the new MK1. The theme, Mortal Kombat (Techno Syndrome) is originally from the Mortal Kombat:The Album (1994) by The Immortals and was a smash hit for over a year before the film's release. It played a huge part of the movie and helped sell over 1 million copies of the TVT records' original motion picture soundtrack. RIP to Trevor Goddard (Kano), Gregory McKenney (first onscreen version of Jax) and recently deceased martial arts legend, Pat E. Johnson (fight choreographer). The sequel aka Annihilation (1997), it's considered one of the worse, watch if you chose. Definitely check out the 2021 reboot.

The guy Lu Kang fighting first is Hakeem The Machine Johnson, he was on a TV show called Wmac Masters with Ho-Sung Pak, Who basically did all the movements for Lu Kang in Mortal Kombat Games.

I was there when this was in theaters. It was all the rage for me as a kid and lover of the video game. Loved it!

Great reaction. For me still this is still the best *live* video game movie ever it just does everything right yet is simplistic about it very accurate to the first 2 games. The only small liberties they took was giving Liu Kang a brother with Chan(he has no brother in the games) and in the games The great Kung Lao is the ancestor to the modern day Kung Lao, in tbis movie they made him Liu's ancestor. In the games Kung Lao and Liu Kang aren't related theyre good friends who trained together in the Shaolin Order of light. 😎
