The thing I loved most is how Ultimate goes out of its way to point out that modern vampires are nothing like Alucard and their pitiful state/power disappoints him. There are no true vampires left that can compete with him, and it bores him greatly. Anderson was his only real challenge and boy did he love it.

Funny thing is Father Alexander Anderson is probably the closest to being an actual good guy in the entire series. Hes merciless, but mainly to monsters and those who chose to risk their lives in this line of work. There is no way he would condone senseless killing of innocents, even if theyre not catholic. He may enjoy the weakening of Hellsing through the deaths of brits in the vampire attacks, but we know he would not stand idly by as it happened and he would still save them if he was there. Oh and a version of angel dust Anderson could very well be Alexanders father.

Honestly, Anderson's introduction in Hellsing 2001 was perfect for me, he's introduced as a simple gentle priest, who even blesses a woman, so the whiplash of his personality in battle battle is much more pronounced. Hellsing 2001 works less like a gory action fest and more like a mystery or noir. Not saying one is better than the other but just saying, it's different.

He wasn't Italian though. He's stated to be from the UK/Ireland, with his English VA being Scottish and his views on Northern Ireland being consistent with Catholic doctrine. I think Anderson was a soldier at some point, but not WW1. We don't really know his age either, outside of him looking the same as he does when Hellsing takes place (in the late 90s, early 2000s) as he did when Yummi, Heinkel and Maxwell all grew up in the orphanage he runs. If those characters are in their mid 20s and Anderson looks to be in his mid 30s, early 40s. He could be pushing 80.

Fun fact - "Iscariot" is likely a derivative of "Sicarius," (plural - "Sicarii") or "dagger man," a term for a Jewish assassin that would kill Roman soldiers during the Roman occupation of Israel, or more generally, a term for backstabber. Thus, Judas "Iscariot" would mean Judas the Backstabber or Judas the Assassin, hence the Vatican's monster hunting program being named after him, who in their eyes, is the ultimate assassin. Or maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Part of what makes Anderson interesting is that his history has either been erased, or he had a different identity before becoming a Regenerator. See also On Deadly Ground, where Taggerd is stated as being such a top secret agent that searches for him don't even throw up Top Secret flags in the computer systems. Though, what I'd be intrested in really finding out is what exactly is a Regenerator? I just have the 2001 and Ultimate to go on. And it's never touched on as to what they are. Just that human versions are rare/unheard of. Alucard's pointing out of Anderson being a human regenerator is punctuated by his seeming shock that such a thing exists. He clearly knows what regenerators are, but has apparently never encountered a human one. Also, trash-talk of Anderson being a "failed science experiment", implies that perhaps attempts at creating human Regenerators went as badly as the intial trial runs of a Robocop 2 at the beginning of said movie.

You also only have to look at one of Alexander Anderson's fights with Alucard to see that the meaning of it in Hellsing is the same as the rest of the action genre - an extraordinary ability to heal from wounds. Alucard loads with him with explosive bullets and he just heals from those wounds.

This is how I see it. Alucard was once extremely religious but at the end of his life lost his faith and gave up his humanity and became a monster for power. He respects humans who can keep their faith and have the willpower to stay human even in the face of death because he himself couldn’t do it. This is shown many times like when Alucard meets the queen or when he fights Walter and says his aged body was better than his younger vampire one. Also when Anderson becomes a monster he is greatly disappointed because he made the same mistake he did.

12:10 I think Anderson's flashback was taken from that scene in the Manga/OVA where the SWAT soldier, who had been sent to kill Alucard on suspicions of terrorism, shot himself through the mouth; my reason for believing this is not only the resemblance between the two scenes, but the fact that, while ripping Anderson's arms, Alucard says the same line to him that he says to the SWAT soldier. If this is indeed the case I find it odd that GONZO would retrofit this specific scene for God knows what reason.

I love hellsing and ultima, but m8 how can u not see the simbleisem in this story and how it shows all 3 forms of "sides" u have Alucard as evil(the devel) we have Anderson as the good(haven) and then we have the Major as a robort (science)for me the story is about how if u go to fare in enything u end up evil and as a villan, just look at how every person in the story chances, exept Integra... but my point is just i think that in this story Anderson is around the same age as Alucard, as this 2(3) are just the latest soldiers in a never ending war, rember its not stated i Hellsing that Alucard was/is the first vampyer, only that he is the strongest, a count or a king but not the first!(this point is more clear in hellsing then in ultima)

I, for one, don't think Anderson was an Italian soldier, because that would have put him on the side of the Axis, and as we know, the Nazis who became Millennium and were experimenting with harnessing the power of vampires were as well, so he wouldn't have inherently been put into conflict with those vampires. I realize that Millennium doesn't factor into the Studio Gonzo series, but that series still contains references to Alucard and Walter fighting vampires together during WWII, so the occult wing of the Nazi regime trying to harness vampires still plays into the narrative, I believe. And given Anderson's non-Italian name (though in fairness, that could always be a code name or an alias) and more specifically his appearance and consistent Scottish accent, I think it's more likely that he was a Scot fighting in the War on on the side of the Allies in the British military. Anderson could have been a Catholic already (there's certainly plenty of both Catholics and Protestants in Scotland), or he could have converted after the fact. Whatever the case, my theory is that he survived that vampire encounter in WWII, was saved by Iscariot and joined them, volunteering for the experiments that made him what he became.

I don't think he could, but that's the whole point and what disappointed Alucard: the whole point of a human trying to fight such an unfathomably superior monster is that a man's faith, courage and will is the only thing he has to fall back on... and that is ok. Anderson "cheated".

Good video but the fight between Anderson and Alucard in the 2001 series is definitely better than the OVA simply because of the music and pacing a fight that ends in t minus 30 seconds with dorky music isn’t very interesting even if it’s drawn well

Not specifically. It's more that Allucard was speaking to Anderson as a representative of Iscariot. He's had encounters with them before. But it's been a long while since one like Anderson's shown up and become a proper threat.

@@vladyvhv9579 I'm not sure, whenever Anderson was brought up, to me, it seemed implied that they were showing a continuous story through both, direct and indirect, reference. (Again, it's been a while) Especially after the rapid transformative capabilities of artifacts are introduced along with how hard they leaned into the 'Celtic-Catholic'-image with him which could imply some experience with an artifact occuring as far back as the 4th-7th centuries A.C.E. Between the time of the late Roman Empire, leading into the Saxon kingdoms and the Vikings, Ireland had developed into a network of Monasteries, to which, Vikings put to a decisive end. I could imagine an ancient Romanized Celt being viewed as a good foil to their presentation of Alucard as an ancient presence. Even if Alucard wasn't quite as old as that, having been born during the Ottoman Turks' reign, having him go up against one of the earliest adherents to Christianity would seem like something the creators would find appealing. Was trying to think of blonde hair actors haha. So many but they all are Brad Pitt types. The other actors that could play him may be too old. Mark Strong could absolutely do his voice but could he play the character.
