The ELO specialist has a really novel suggestion - an instrumental track with a mostly vocal intro, but the vocals are recorded BACKWARDS, like the Beatles' secret backwards messages. Interested? The track is Fire On High, the opening track to the 1975 album Face The Music, and that track actually represents the end of the experimental ELO of the early 70s in the intro, and the beginning of the 'classic ELO sound' of the late 70s for the rest of the track and the album. If you take up my suggestion of using a poll to allow the good people to choose the track for your next chosen artist you could add Fire On High to the list as well as my original suggestion of Turn To Stone. They both work as good introductions to this band.

I'm 61, and have loved this since it came out when I was 14! Dad, it's so awesome that you and your son can now share this together! FYI, I think Kansas opened for Queen many times, and Queen were big fans. Queen were around for a good 10 years before LiveAid in 1985, and until Freddie Mercury's passing in 1991 or 92, but I'm not sure how often they toured with Kansas. You guys should check out the Professor of Rock on his channel, if you haven't already. His dad also shared a love of Rock with him, and he's passing it on to his own kids. He's an all around awesome guy, and gets the most amazing artist interviews for his channel! Anyway, thanks for the awesome review!

Songs I can think of now with a vocal intro: - Nowhere Man (Beatles) - I'm sure you noth know this one - I Want It All (Queen) - Not sure if you've heard this one already - What Kind Of Love (Ajalon) - This is by far the least known of the ones I can think of. This whole song has a certain Carry On Wayward Son feel all throughout; perhaps it was inspired by it?

Loved Ethan's reaction to that one. As I said earlier in the latest polling comments this was a one hit wonder in the UK, only reaching 51 in the UK top 75 during a 7 week run, so I know I must have taped it off regular radio airplay and not the Sunday evening top 40 chart show. It's been a favourite song ever since and often listen to it in order to shift that stubborn earwax.!
@fatherandsonreactions3 жыл бұрын
Wow interesting! Thanks Dave! They had no other hits there? -S
@davemac11973 жыл бұрын
@@fatherandsonreactions - I checked the other day when I did the poll and no they didn't. I was actually shocked by the chart position because for me personally they were a big hit (obviously). I can only assume the UK is a tough market for American bands because we produce so much good stuff ourselves. From a commercial point of view it is important for UK bands to crack the American market because it is 5 times larger than the UK, but there is not the same imperative in reverse for US bands.
@ballyastrocade56723 жыл бұрын
@@davemac1197 Sometimes it just comes down to how much effort your record label puts into promoting you in markets outside of your home country, whichever one it happens to be. Status Quo, for example, only ever had *one* hit here in the USA -- "Pictures of Matchstick Men", peaking at #12 in 1968 -- and are basically complete unknowns here, despite being hugely successful on your side of the pond, primarily because their record labels, PYE and Vertigo, put almost zero effort into getting them any kind of serious promotion or airplay in this market.
@davemac11973 жыл бұрын
@@ballyastrocade5672 - yes, absolutely, that was why I mentioned the commercial aspect. I'm familiar with ELO's marketing in particluar and they were originally signed to EMI Harvest in London but marketed very successfully in the US (and Canada?) by United Artists in Los Angeles. In fact there's a hilarious story that a UA exec in Los Angeles asked his assistant to "phone London" and find out the title of the Electric Light Orchestra [debut] album, but she didn't allow for the time zone difference and had to give up, leaving a message on her boss's desk - "Electric Light Orchestra - NO ANSWER". The exec picked up the message the next morning and thought 'hey, catchy title' and the United Artists version of the album carries 'NO ANSWER' on the record/CD spine to this day. It was never corrected!

Wow! This was a pretty popular song, especially with those who played Guitar Hero in the 2000s. Haha (So I guess I can't be surprised it won). Aww, Larry. Yeah, you guys bonding with each other over music is amazing, and it's the main reason why I like your channel so much (I think you guys are the only music channel I subscribed to, to be honest). There's nothing better than a parent and kid sharing music (among other things) you know with each other. I believe that connection through music you both share, and continue to grow from, is why I keep coming back. :) Plus, you both seem like great people to begin with, who also tolerate my constant waterfall of words and frequent music suggestions. lol Thank you, though, for reading them, and even reaching out on occasion. Also, I have to say Larry.... your daughter made a killer scarf! Looks awesome! I can see why Ethan's looking for his own, as you sashay through the house, flaunting the comfortable and sweet looking fabric. Haha Now, onto the song.......... Excuse me with those keyboard accents.... Adding that with groovy guitar lines? Woof. Then juxtapose those with sections of soft, groovy drumming and a piano melody? Yes please. I also like how in production, they had the piano be the focus at first, then when the vocalist elevates his vocals the piano takes a slight backstep for the drumming to take over the rhythm, with the piano complimenting it. After hearing these guitar sections, changing of time signatures, and the overall quality of the song, I am reminded why it was so popular on Guitar Hero (and when the song came out). lol (and actually, now I don't know if this was on Guitar Hero or Rock Band... Ah well). And that's how you end a song! Not always a fan of fade outs during music sections, and here they finished the awesome instrumental (key word "finish), and THEN fade it out with a keyboard tone. That's how you do it. :P Yeah, progressive rock is my jam, so no surprise that I find this song amazing. lol Great composition, textures, transitions, instrumentals, great vocals. Post song reaction........... Yeah, this was a great vocal intro for sure. I'd have to think about other songs, so I'll reply to this post if I find something. Good idea not following through with that poll idea... The first 10 people would get a crack at it, leaving the rest sort of in the dust. In regards with Queen... Yeah, they're Queen. Pretty sure they toured quite a lot, even around the world. I can't imagine they'd have roughly the same acts following them on each tour. In fact, here's a wikipedia list of their tours, if you'd like to peruse: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Queen_live_performances P.S. Just saw that they put out an album this year, too. I didn't know they were still making music. I heard it was a good prog rock album, too.
@brianmannell97543 жыл бұрын
Nah, couldn't really think of any song with a straight up vocal intro. One I can think of is Zeal and Ardor - Devil is Fine, but I don't think you'd guys would like it. That's really meant to be an album intro, and the song feels like an album intro. Also don't know how you feel anti-religious kinds of songs..... Just to throw that caveat in there (The album is partly about slaves who felt abandoned by God, so they turned to the Devil for aid. Basically). There's Type-O Negative's "Christian Woman," but it's a 9 minute song, and I don't think the vocal intro would be like how you expect it. The song has a "gothic" feel to it (think vampires, dark castles and cathedrals, etc), and it is slightly mature in nature. But, I think you'd like this more than Zeal and Ardor. That said, I personally, like both songs quite a bit. lol

I will offer song suggestions to do with as you will, check them out just for yourself if nothing else. This time I would suggest the group, Manfred Mann, the song, Blinded by the Light, written by the Boss, Bruce Springsteen, and The Mighty Quinn. Metallica, Enter Sandman, or April Wine, I like to Rock. Usually, if one reaction channel does Boston, More than a Feeling, they all do More than a Feeling. I think I suggested 10001110101 on another video due to it's hidden Rush reference in the lyrics. My head is going to explode...too many songs to suggest! LOL! Cheers!

I’m a bit disappointed in you both for not watching Supernatural. WTF

Another great vocal intro is Eagles - Seven Bridges Road (kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIXZhWeAg6Z2qdU). Don't react to it...it'll get blocked haha! Eagles are notorious for blocking, or so I've heard. Cheers!

I kinda hate you now ;) Just kidding, but this song always is played at the start of Supernatural season finales - and tomorrow the series' final episode is going to air, which means it will start with this very song. For the very last time. After 15 effing years. Awesome song, but the timing makes me a bit misty eyed

Wow we had no clue. We put this song in a poll and people wanted it. So sorry to hear about that! -S

@@fatherandsonreactions Thanks, all is well. The show had a great run and they're coming to a phenomenal end. But yes, when I saw that song in the poll I was like "You're kidding, right?!" ;) As for a song with an awesome vocal intro: Heather Nova - Island. It's not sung but she's doing some kind of siren wailing that gives me goose bumps every single time. IF you're doing the song, be aware that it's very slow and it's about a difficult topic: domestic abuse she's gone through. It's very very emotional so it might not be a great song to react to as I don't think that it's "fun" enough. But still an awesome song to listen to. And it's pretty intense.

@@lisamorrison2149 I'm actually not. They've ended the show on a clear high note. This season was great and the last few episodes have been on fire. They were able to bring it all to an end in a very satisfying fashion and that's something you don't always see these days. It's been great 15 years and it had to end sooner or later, so I'm glad that they did it this way
