Finally someone who knows to interview FJM without it getting cringy and pseudo-deep
@jamiecal117 жыл бұрын
myarea51 maybe FJM just isn't for you if you associate when he does with "cringey and pseudo-deep". Like, listen to his albums and then ask yourself why interviewers would ask him questions that are framed as profound. If you want to watch some celeb be light hearted and jokey on a talk show about their new movie - congrats, there's a bagillion cases of that elsewhere. 100 bagillion. They're all ~so cringeyyy~ though.
@myarea517 жыл бұрын
JebaJebaJemeh Josh is a person first, a goof second and an artist third. In that order. He is a team player who adjusts to whatever interview style he's presented with in any given situation (which is a rare skill among artists) unless it gets super stupid so that not even he can work with what he's getting or the interviewer clearly has never heard a single song of his. Meyers gets it and just talks to him like he would to a casual friend he really likes, that's why the interview goes so well. Most interviewers talk to FJM from outer space and then he plays along. Seth was talking to Josh instead. And it shows in all the best ways. This is by no means a criticism ,or any kind of comment, really, on Josh Tillman, but a sincere compliment to Seth Meyers
@jamiecal117 жыл бұрын
myarea51 fair enough and admittedly I jumped the gun when I saw "cringey". That said, a talk show is fundamentally different in expectation to a run of the mill interview with whatever festival he's at or whatever, who have certain questions to ask, and want to give him the most attention. Whereas here, the attention is split. There, we get a check list of things to ask, here anecdotal, obvious tone to adhere to etc. also, I had in mind when I read your first comment that you were dismissing the longer, profound interviews like with Q or Zane Lowe or whatever -- but I suppose those are more conversational than rambling too.

The fact that Josh name drops Serge Gainsbourg blows my mind, Fleet Foxes and FJM are 2 of my favorite bands of all time and Charlotte Gainsbourg is one of my favorite actresses. I actually met Josh once when a FJM show in Phoenix AZ sold out, he put my brother and I on the guest list and we got in for free because I told him tickets sold out, he is a stand up dude. The party persona is cool but he is a very smart, passionate musician

I always thought he was a pretentious guy from like one interview I saw a while back. Going though these and a few other interviews he seems like a genuinely cool dude.
@matthewsnyder666 жыл бұрын
He's genuinely too smart to ever be pretentious, but he does seem like more centered and less fearful of not being liked.
@HotStrange6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Snyder I think not being afraid of what others think can make someone seem pretentious at first. Not that I think that’s a bad thing, just something I noticed. Seth is also a great interviewer and can really bring out the best in his guests so that might have something to do with it as well.
@matthewsnyder666 жыл бұрын
I think you totally misconstrue the actual definition of "pretentious" or "pretentiousness": "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed" As I said, he--other than St. Vincent or Kendrick Lamar--is the finest music lyricist of his generation. He is incredibly smart and funny and his polish and wit rub people the wrong way, but that doesn't mean he's pretentious. Maybe arrogant or self-centered, but those are different qualities--and are pretty common among the Celebrity Set.
@HotStrange6 жыл бұрын
Matthew Snyder I think you misunderstood *my* point lol. I was agreeing with you.
@matthewsnyder666 жыл бұрын
Totally. My bad. I see what you're saying. You were initially not seeing his intellectual depth at first but see that it's authentic after other interviews. I guess I was barking up the wrong tree. If you look at the thread below, you see a lot of people misusing the term. This is my favorite interview with him--it's astonishingly perceptive: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h6LZk2SjZb6ohtE
