The fact this was a diss track and lead to Ryan Adams having a very public meltdown on Twitter makes it so much better.

@@vraisairs9201 That song is great. Like or hate Swift, she read all the stuff about her (most made up) and thought "Hey... that woman's super interesting, let's write about her". And the song is great. If it's not taken seriously it's because after all, people think Swift is not exactly walking on the wild side. A guy sings it in Velvet Underground feels and suddenly "cause we're young and we're reckless we'll take it way too far. Will it leave you breathless or with a nasty scar?" sounds punk and powerful... So the lyrics must have been good to begin with. If they were unbelievable at first it's because after all, people don't believe that of Swift. But it's fun that someone so... unpunk wrote lyrics that go with the Velvet Underground.

Sittin' in the mornin' sun / I'm waiting for my man I'll be sittin' when the evenin' comes / I'm waiting for my man Watchin' the ships roll in / Twenty-six dollars in my hand Then I watch 'em roll away again / Up to Lexington, one, two, five I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay / Feel sick and dirty, more dead than alive Watchin' the tide, roll away / I'm waiting for my man I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay / Hey, white boy, what you doin' uptown? Wastin' time... / Hey, white boy, you chasin' our women around? I left my home in Georgia / Oh pardon me sir, it's the furthest from my mind And I headed for the Frisco Bay / I'm just lookin' for a dear, dear friend of mine 'Cause I've got nothin' to live for / I'm waiting for my man Looks like nothin's gonna come my way, so / Here he comes, he's all dressed in black I'm just come sittin' on the dock of the bay / Beat up shoes and a big straw hat Watchin' the tide roll away / He's never early, he's always late I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay, wastin' time / First thing you learn is that you always gotta wait Looks like nothin's gonna change / I'm waiting for my man, ah work it now... Everything seems to stay the same / Up to a brownstone, up three flights of stairs I can't do what ten people tell me to do / Everybody body's pinned you, but nobody cares So I guess I'll remain the same / He's got the works, gives you sweet taste I'm sittin' here restin' my bones / Ah then you gotta split because you got no time to waste And this loneliness won't leave me alone / I'm waiting for my man This two thousand miles I roamed / Baby don't you holler, darlin' don't you bawl and shout Just to make this dock my home / I'm feeling good, you know I'm gonna work it on out Now I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay / I'm feeling good, I feel oh so fine Watchin' the tide roll away / Until tomorrow, but that's just some other time Sittin' on the dock of the bay / I'm waiting for my man I'm wastin' time / walk it home.

This is curious. The lyrics were already pretty punk, but for some reason, when a white, blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman sang them, even though she was parodying the image the press (and many people) had about her, no one seemed to believe it was true. Everyone's willing to throw Swift under the bus for being like the woman in that song, but no one really believed it. Now it's sung by a man with a deep voice and in punk style and the lyrics are, of course, super punk. Marianne Faithfull complained that companies didn't want to put her singing Sister morphine, but they wanted Jagger and Richards recording it. Interesting. No one really believes blonde and blue eyed women can "walk on the wild side" (thinking about Faithfull here).

@isabelguzmanmiranda50255 ай бұрын
. Like or hate Swift, she read all the stuff about her (most made up) and thought "Hey... that woman's super interesting, let's write about her". If the lyrics were not taken seriously unless a husky-voiced man sung them it's because after all, people think Swift is not exactly walking on the wild side. If it's any consolation, it's probably unconscious bias. Marianne Faithful said she wrote the lyrics to Sister morphine, but companies did not want her to sing it. Probably because she looked angelic. So it was given to Jagger and Richards. It might well be that unconsciously, blonde and blue eyed white women do not sound punk because we don't think them capable of walking on the wild side. Tell that to Faithfull... So, nice that you have noticed. Congratulations to you, not everybody does. I guess we can't avoid unconscious biases, but being aware of them makes us... well, more aware, I guess.
@vraisairs92015 ай бұрын
@@isabelguzmanmiranda5025 yea I definitely have some unconscious biases around what “deep” music sounds like and around Swift’s music specifically. But if I had to self diagnose, I think it has less to do with gender and more to do with instrumentation and delivery. I mean, Nico sang with the Velvet Underground on their first album and it was great. I’ve been trying to unlearn it, but naturally, If I hear some jangly guitars, a trashy drum kit, and some talky vocals, my brain goes “oh yea they’re spittin’ some facts.” And I have thought about how most of the artists I listen to tend to be men (a fact that does make me feel a little odd) and why that is and really it’s impossible to say for sure, but I tend to think that it is more that men tend to be more common in genres I prefer rather than I prefer genres because they are sung by men. But also I don’t know how much that matters since it ends up with the same outcome. Interesting fact about Faithful. I had no idea. “As tears go by” is a banger
@isabelguzmanmiranda50253 ай бұрын
@@vraisairs9201 I get the disliking more the poppy instrumentation and delivery than the gender stuff. Tay's songs in a Janis Joplin style would rock SO hard.
