Yea and this does apply to white people as well. I still put on telephone voice or courtroom voice and drastically change my speech for that, but those voices are white-coded in american culture, so I'd imagine for POCs it's basically just sounding white. I naturally talk more loosely in my day to day life cus I wasn't raised prim and proper. My mom grew up in the hood so I picked up a decent amount of her own mannerisms also, so I definitely feel that we all code switch to a degree, it's just that certain codes are more racially oriented than not unfortunately. I've been told to act whiter than I do by people of other races and other white ppl, so I think u nailed it when u said it is about masking your background and influences

I don't understand the whole idea of not being able to say anything about codeswitching because Kendrick is purely black, either. So, if we take that logic to its extreme, and apply it to something else, does that mean, neither of us who live in America can speak critically of the people of the Ming Dynasty, because we're not Chinese? Just because Kendrick is purely black, doesn't mean he isn't allowed to call someone out for abandoning one part of who they are because it benefits them in that moment. People do that all the time, even if it has nothing to do with being black/white: politicians momentarily forgo their wealth and privilege, in order to appeal to the poorer demographic (rich/poor), saying, "Look, I'm not wealthy, I'm just like you guys!
