Living in Finland, I introduced Father Ted to them and the response was phenomenal. One mate in particular is so impressed with it and he has introduced it to his colleagues and mates who are truly love it. I can say your reactions are wonderful and similar to the reactions of my mates. I made the pilgrimage to "The House" and other filming locations, via the coastline around the whole island and then on to Dublin to finish with. I recommend it 👌😊 Regarding Canadian productions, I must say I enjoy Trailer Park Boys. Parts of it have me in stitches, just like FT.

Heres a fact about the show from a discussion board Father Ted was commissioned by Channel 4, a British Broadcaster, from Hat Trick who employed Irish writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews to develop their script. The show was NEVER presented to RTE as a script idea from either the writers or Hat Trick, a British Company. Its worth pointing out that the commissioning editor in Channel 4 that "bought" the show was Seamus Cassidy, now back home and running Happy Endings, the company that make The Panel for RTE. Father Ted, whether we like it or not is a British show, made for British TV with British money. The Irish Film Board or no other Irish funding was contributed (or sought) for the show. The nationality of the writers or the location of the show is of no consequence. The exteriors could have been shot anywhere in Britain just as easily. The average British viewer wouldn't have known or much less cared if it wasn't Ireland. The views of Irish viewers weren't a consideration. Get over it. Its true to say that Irish crew were used for these location shoots and obviously the Irish cast too.This alone does not make an Irish show. In recent years lots of British TV shows have been shot and edited in Ireland. Most of these shows are set in Britain and use Irish locations for Britain. The only reason they're being made here is due to the funding being made available by the film board. Like Father Ted, none of these shows are Irish. If RTE or TV3 buy them down the line it doesn't make them any more Irish. The important fact from all of this is that at least talented Irish crews are getting employment. Thats all that matters.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno Жыл бұрын
So only the creators, actors and crew were Irish. And the guy who commissioned it. And it was set in Ireland. With Irish characters. And all exterior shots were filmed in Ireland. And there was numerous cultural references British people didn’t even pick up on. But because it was British money and network, none of that counts? So the entire creative process counts for nought because of where the finance came from?

I don’t know about Canada, but while America considers (jokingly/endearingly) Poles (‘Polacks’) to be dimwitted and - let’s say, a little ‘behind’ - in the UK (and even the Republic Of Ireland itself) the Irish have traditionally been the butt of that type of joke. This show (Father Ted) plays on that stereotype brilliantly.

This was filmed in Ireland but when they brought it to RTE, the national tv station they refused because it made fun on the Catholic Church which was a big deal in Ireland at the time, so they took it to an English tv station instead and it immediately became one of Irelands most loved tv shows.
@Dreyno
@Dreyno Жыл бұрын
That’s not true. They pitched it directly to Hat Trick Productions and Channel 4 as they were both living in London and working as comedy writers there. RTE had no track record for sitcoms and a budget mostly spent on presenter’s wages so they didn’t contact them about it.
