I'm a fulltime caregiver to a nonverbal little girl who does not have autism, and I totally get the constantly trying to interpret the situation. Lately her tummy has been hurting her a lot, but it took her throwing up before we realized that she needed a break from her feed (she is fed 24/7 into a feeding tube). It's so frustrating for her parents and I, but it's just as frustrating if not more frustrating for her. I so wish communication came easier for these kids.

As a kid I had a hard time both leaving the house and going home. Leaving the house was because that transition of going somewhere else was just asking a lot of effort and energy from me, without me being able to make an estimate of the 'pay off' I would get in return, and so staying in a situation that made me decently content was preferable over changing it up. And going home was always meltdown time for me. Because it was usually after something that was really high in sensory imput and I would be too tired and too overwhelmed to make that transition. I'd been ignoring / surpressing the sensory meltdown because I didn't want the fun to end, and then going from something fun and where I got a lot of attention, back to a place where there would be demands put on me and where the attention was shifted to cooking and chores instead of my parents having fun with me was always just too much for me and cause a meltdown. And there was no longer a reward in surpressing it. For my parents the trick was to leave earlier before I got secretly overwhelmed, to change the routine of the transition where they would give me some positive attention by default while I was settling in at home, before shifting their attention to house hold chores. I still have a hard time making those transitions, although as an adult I've learned to regulate and communicate, although on the inside it still feels the same Off course I can't look into Abbies head, and I have no idea whether this is the case for Abbie or if there's something else going on completely, Still I hope my experiences gives you some new angles or perspectives when your interpreting the situation.

I'm glad you didn't say anything to the kids on the swing about it being special needs only. Just like you say, people don't understand why Abbie gets to use it. You just never know if the other children had special needs also. Plus Abbie had a lovely swing after waiting. 😊

Just a heads up that when I worked for a parks and recreation center the special needs swings were required to have a plaque on the back that said "special needs children only" in order for a child to be asked to not use it. :-)

I want you to know how much I love your family! I feel a part of you when I watch your vlogs. I was a bit reluctant to listen to a podcast as I have never done it before. I gave in and listened and WOW... it was great! Enjoyed every word and subject. I seemed like it just flowed so well . I am 75 and I can tell you that you really do get to the point of not caring what anyone else thinks of you. Also, you find it so easy to blatantly come right out and say NO after 50 years of saying yes when you really meant NO! I could go on but, I’m sure I have rambled on enough so now I am looking forward to more of the same. You are all such a joy in my life and I look forward to watching your vlogs till I can’t. I can Imagine it's pretty frustrating having a park with swings that are made specifically for kids/adults with special needs and they are always being used by the people who don't specifically need that to use that type of swing. I know here where I live it's a pretty small town about 3,000 people at our park we have swings that are specifically made for handicapped people who are in wheelchairs and have mobility issues and when I was growing up I used to see kids completely disrespected and eventually they just had to take the swing down completely. It's really really sad actually. I think someone mentioned this already in one of the comments how they should require a plaque or something stating that it's specifically for people with mobility/disability needs.

I totally agree that when our verbal autistic daughter wants something we on the whole know what she wants. However, when she has meltdowns she often can't tell us why and we still have to work it out. Coming home from the park is a hard transition for our daughter too, especially at mealtimes.

I adopted 3 children with special needs. My doctor would make comments about how well he was dressed . It would hurt my feelings. I talked to a friend about this one day. I said do people think I waited all these years for a baby and not take care of him. She said think about what he sees every day, some parents not taking care of their children. I started watching more people after that and was surprised how many children was dressed in PJs out in public. My second son has autism . Love from south Mississippi

I have to agree that Abbie is the best dressed teenager out there. She's always wearing super modest clothing, which I love. So much of the teen clothes these days is all belly tops, and short skirts. Makes me (as the mum of a girl) cringe. Abbie sure loves her swing tho, Its so sweet to see how happy she gets. Sandy with the pool toy was funny. She's like "I surrender dad" and rolls around all cute. lol. My dog steals stuffed animals and eats the eyes off. Makes me wonder about her, but she is truly the sweetest, most affectionate dog I have ever met/owned. Great vlog!

I have a question. When Abbie tried to kick Cilla in the face on purpose. Why wasn’t she punished or corrected immediately and give a consequence ie made to stop swinging for a short period,park fun time cut short etc...? I’m not talking about physical discipline.
@noellesnow186
@noellesnow186 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Are you Abbie's therapist or doctor? Just curious how people know that Abbie was disciplined for almost kicking Mom in the face? I'm only asking because I had a question in the past, and the answer/comment seemed to have some knowledge about the family that other viewers may be unaware of. Are you a family friend or work with them?
@JamiHefley

@@noellesnow186 I am neither. I am just a fan. I don’t know if she was or not that’s why I asked my question. I feel if she purposefully tried to kick her Mom in the face she should have been removed from the swing and her park trip should have ended early because letting her keep swinging is basically letting her know that behavior is ok.
@noellesnow186

I have seen those swings several times at playgrounds and have had my kids on them I never knew they were special-needs swings, however, there has never been anyone else waiting to use them it’s been times when we were the only ones there. It really makes sense now I see why they would be for a larger child or teen who can fit in them.

I saw a hack for cutting onions on another KZbin channel. Supposedly, the onion juice will go to the nearest wet surface. I have a question .... When Abbie is just being picky for no reason and doesn't have an actual issue with something ...how do you deal with that ? For example , our oldest is 10 and has high functioning autism and is a picky eater ... Its sometimes hard to know if hes actually bothered by a texture or just being picky for no reason .

Id get a little bummed when I new we were going home every time, now I have my limitations. Coming home after a long day feels amazing. Just like there are undesirable tasks/activities, there are undesirable transitions too. I feel sad leaving/saying goodbye after visiting with family and going back to my normal household. Same goes for vacations, I’m a mess to travel back home with and literally always have been, but it’s gotten better with time 😅
