I had been thinking of getting one, so thank you for the pruning suggestions. Last year I lifted the crown and cloud pruned an old Osmanthus Burkwoodii and it looks very effective, so clever pruning can certainly make a huge difference.

Hello Laurel, I just had to Google Odmanthis as wasn’t sure what they look like and oh yes, very beautiful and I can imagine yours looks striking in tree form. I highly recommend Fatsias, I think they are lovely, completely hardy, so easy to look after, I really don’t have to do anything except take old leaves off once a year, and I think they look quite tropical. Highly recommended!! Thanks for your lovely comment 💕

Fabulous ! I love it I have a couple of Spiders Web Fatsia's I am definitely going to do this, I have done this with Nandina's and it looks fab plus you get to underplant them and still have the vertical interest it's brilliant well done, thanks! I love that you love them so much I do too and mine were 50p each rescued after a bad storm/weather at the garden centre they had about 20 very straggly looking ones! but I could only fit 2 in my car at the time because I bought plants shrubs & lots of trellis that day too :)

So I’m going to try that so thank you for letting me know, and for commenting 😍 you sound like me, sometimes my car is so stuffed full I cannot fit one more in 🤣😍

They are lovely plants aren't they. In Spain they are usually kept as house plants since they don't take kindly to 40 degrees Celsius in summer. I haven't ever seen them pruned up as a tree but they look good like that, especially the multi trunk....a bit like cloud topiary! And of course you have opened up an empty space underneath that knowing you won't stay empty for long 😜
@TheEnthusiasticGardener3 жыл бұрын
You know me, I can’t resist topiarizing everything! I think we are the opposite, I lift the crowns, and you cut yours back 🥰🤣 but, I am definitely going to chop my mahonia down soon. Just got to look at it tall for a short while longer, because it took me quite a few years to grow it this tall. However, I know I’m going to like it once I bite the bullet 🤣🥰👍
@GrannysGarden3 жыл бұрын
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener The Mahonias really do look good when they are full and lush. A very tropical vibe. I'll have to thin out mine next year after flowering. They are so vigorous this year. They must like the weird weather we have been having.

They grow like weeds in my yard here in the central valley of CA. It's true they don't like the very hot late summer but as long as they are not in direct sunlight they still do quite well. They grow extremely fast and spread rapidly in the spring and early summer and even though they don't like hot and direct sunlight they do love bright sunlight - when they are given a lot of light they become very dark luscious green in color and become shiny and grow huge leaves.
@TheEnthusiasticGardener Жыл бұрын
Hello there mnn1265, isn’t it funny how plants perform differently in different climates? Mine have never spread over here in England. That’s interesting. Thanks for watching and hope you’re having a great week 🥰

I just bought one 3 wks ago and have been looking at videos to get an idea of its mature shape. I didn't know you could prune them like yours..so I might need to get a 2nd plant to have one as a shrub and another as a tree 😀 Katie
