its strange to sit here at the age of 37 and remember how this song made me feel when I was listening to it on smoke breaks, working overnights at Walgreens as a 17 year old kid. It meant the world to me as a lonely teenager. It still makes sense, just tougher to digest now. Hope all you people are well.

Last year, I showed this to my parents, who were both over 70. I printed out the lyrics in large type on several pieces of paper so they could follow along. They both teared up, just as I always do, and absolutely loved it. My dad passed away completely unexpectedly a few months later. I’m so thankful for that memory. That was my last trip home before he passed, so it’s one of my final ones.

I'm very sorry for your loss. Growing up I got tons of crap from my parents because of my "choices and attitude" not lining up with theirs. They always wondered what's going on in my head, so one day I printed the lyrics for this and just left them where I knew they'd find them. I'd love to say it made some kind of difference, but when you grow up in a family that thinks it's still the mid 1950s, and you're the way I am, understanding will always be just out of reach.

If you'd told me 25 years ago that I'd still be listening to this song with a full orchestra in the background, as a 41 year old I would never have believed you. Saw it live last night at their last European gig in London, and not ashamed to admit i shed a tear.

I'd like to hear the actual live audio track from this performance. this is obviously after major overdubs and a re-recording of all of the vocal tracks in the studio. That, plus they add in all of the effects on the voice and even used drum samples. I'd like to know what parts they actually kept from the live performance. I'm not knocking them in any way..I'm just interested. We all know live albums and most live productions aren't actually live. Usually the drums tracks are kept in order to keep the live feeling, but that's it. But in this, it is obvious that even some of the drums were re-recorded or replaced with samples.

Michael R. ... yeah, I think about this often... like how Tom Delonge can barely play 50% of the notes correctly on his guitar typically, yet crushed the blink-182 live album... or Jason Cruz not missing a note singing on Strung Out’s live album, when typically his vocal range is suuuper limited when playing live... makes you wonder how much is corrected, or even redone, in post-production eh?

A few weeks ago, I listened to NOFX's song "decline'' and was impressed by its outstanding compositional ability and the variety of hooks it offers. Progressive rock songs are often close to 20 minutes long, but this is the first time I've seen one where the tone can expand, contract, and change so freely.

@NintenDub
@NintenDub 3 жыл бұрын
Absolutely. He's the best drummer in all of punk us argue. As a drummer, the finnesse he has, also with the amount of punch, while using really not much energy, is not something a lot of ppl do.its hard. I've watched drum covers and ppl get burnt out by the end of songs.they just dont have the chops. As smelly gotten older his posture on the kit and his train like steam are bizarre. You'd think hed be slower/sloppier, but he's better than he's ever been on the kit. Vids from 92 make him look like a different guy playing.slouched.dreads.sweating.still on time but seemingly having a harder time doing so . now Sure a Travis barker has all the tommy lee flare, but smelly could outplay him and out stamina him as well

From living in cars, being the "worst band in punk", living in squats, overcoming loss, almost dying from drugs, and much more. Through it all NOFX survived became better, toured the world, and are playing to sold out crowds almost 40 years later and all of it without breaking up. Who would have thought? Certainly not them. After all those years: - I still know the lyrics and - I still feel them so - I still play the song loud enough my neighbors don't miss this masterpiece, even though - I still sing along and do the mouth trumpet even though I am horrible at both. Also: - "the decline" still is the one song that gives me an idea of how patriotism must feel when the "national anthem" plays - I feel connected to all the fellow punks, nonconformist, hippies and queers and I am proud of me and everyone who resisted all temptations of greed and never sold their integrity for money or power - Mike still can wear everything - Eric still getting more attractive every year , so - I still would be happy to be his sex-slave

I remember when I first heard this in 2001. I was drinking beer alone after work one night in my shitty apartment that looked out on nothing but wheat fields on the outskirts of Pullman, WA. I was poor, felt like the only person in town my age who wasn't going to school. I had a 13" black and white tv with dials that made a satisfying thunk when you changed the channel, which I didn't do much since my antenna only picked up ABC and 2 different PBS stations. There was this college radio station I found coming out of WSU that had a weekly punk show I would listen to, and the guy on there played this song, and that is the story of how you found songs that stayed with you forever back when you didn't even have a computer.
