Great repair and another reason to have the IR camera, what a handy, almost necessary tool now a days. I would of missed the culprit capacitor without the IR indication. No battery..no MOSFET needed, good thinking. Solid video bro, well done as always. See ya next time.

Thanks 👍I've not done much with tubes / valves as we call them. I think the Radiac meter and the JVC hifi are the only times I've came across them, apart from old TVs back in the day. The first computer I programmed on (when I was a kid) was a Nascom II back in around 1980 that a retired guy who lived around the corner from me built from a kit. He was into all kinds of electronics etc, and he learned me how to program in Basic, and a little bit of electronics now and again.

I can't ever remember seeing you fail at a repair. Another nice one, turning an item heading for landfill into a very useful piece of kit. There should be courses at technical colleges specifically teaching youngsters how to do what you do. They could earn good money and help the environment at the same time.
@BuyitFixit3 ай бұрын
Thanks👍 There has been a few "failures" but usually due to the item being pretty much beyond repair or not being able to get chips that require firmware. I did a Dyson hot and cold fan which was a fail, but then someone sent me a broken PCB where the MCU was still good, so I did manage to repair it in a subsequent video, another similar one was a Milwaukee circular saw. The ring chime thing seemed to require a new IC, and it was more than the cost of buying another unit, and the Cricut vinyl cutter circuit board was too far dissolved by coke!

Great video as usual! The thermal camera it's a God's sent tool to help repairmen troubleshoot problems. It could have still been possible without it but the ammount of time and headaches it would take to find that random shorted capacitor would be huge and in some cases not even worth the time for most people

It looks exactly like my Guide PC210 and probably is. It's a great unit and the macro lens I got with it was worth it for electronics. Pointed out the problem with my stereo amp and where a leak was coming from in my home. I'm glad these things are affordable now.

@@BuyitFixit Thank you for the encouragement. Unfortunately I do not have formal electronics training. I have an amateur radio licence, understand the basic function of the components, and the direction the electrons are supposed to flow, but not enough insight into the function of the chips occurring in the electronics you succeed in fixing. But my mantra of "common things occur commonly" helps me a lot!

@@BuyitFixithey Mick, I’m the same as the person above. Obviously lots of different people watch you and are interested - i wonder if sometimes you’d just very briefly explain a value you’d expect to see? In this one, you test a resistance in the faulty cap, and seem to have a value in your mind of what the resistance should be. I wonder if you could try to remember to say “id expect this to be around 4 ohms, as it’s surface mounted.” or something? I think if i tested that cap and the value wasn’t zero or something, I’d think it was ok (you don’t know what you don’t know!) thanks again, keep up the videos please, so enjoyable 👍
@AubsUK3 ай бұрын
@@LetsGoJoeBThis is my take on it, but I might be wildly wrong. Take it with caution! When Mick measured the resistance of the cap at 12:40, it was only to see if the capacitor was shorted (i.e. no or significantly low resistance). When a capacitor is shorted, it means that the two terminals of the capacitor are directly connected, either due to an internal fault or an external connection. This creates a path for current to flow freely between the terminals, effectively bypassing the capacitor's intended function of storing and releasing electrical charge (thanks ChatGPT for a great explanation). Because the faulty capacitor was on the output of an inductor, at 13:10, he looked for another capacitor around the same size that is also on the output of another inductor, and measured the capacitance of that. When he tried to measure it in-circuit, the results fluctuated (13:57) because there were other capacitors and components that were affecting it, so he took it out and measured it. At 14:55, he measured it out of circuit and it came to ~25uF. If you search "most commonly available SMD capacitor values" and look at the rfcafe page, you'll see some common ones, the closest to 25uF is 22 or 33.

Great circuit tracing! It will be excellent for your camera monitor & console testing. One thing: it appears that the green/red & white LEDs were functioning (17:05) when you had the PCB out but weren't working after you put it back in the case. At 20:49, I noticed the power on/off button (red when off, green when on) was dark as well as the AV, menu & cursor buttons (dark when off, white when on.)

Thanks 👍It's probably the camera not picking things up properly due to the auto exposure. The lights were working OK, but I think because the monitor was reflecting back at the camera and it was lit up (picture looked a lot brighter in real life) it was causing the cameras AE to darken the image.

I dunno if you only choose certain things to post or if your just lucky a lot of the time.. whenever i order spares or repairs 90% of the time i end up getting something thats been ravaged and missing half the stuff that goes with it or either the boards blown out a big chunk of traces or the main microchip or eeprom are melted and got holes in em.. rarely do i get something that looks as good as the picture did or the description is at all true. When im lucky ill get something that an older person broke but theyll say things like “wet” and thats it, or theyll go on with a 2 page story about how their grandchildren were playing with dinosaurs and one got mad then the dog got out and grandpa fell so blah blah blah.. lol. But seriously i will only get something worth a damn or able to be fixed every 1 in maybe 5 things..
@BuyitFixit3 ай бұрын
Damn that sucks. I've got a few repairs that are "work in progress" but the majority of stuff seems to be not too bad. Perhaps it's the items I buy? Although people do send me things and if I can't fix them for whatever reason I'd still do a video on it. The Dyson hot and cold fan turned out to be a failure as the MCU had fried, but someone from Australia kindly sent me his broken PCB and the MCU was OK in that one so I managed to fix it in a re-visit video. There's been a couple like that (Milwaukee Circular saw had the same thing).
