Diese Nacht ist kalt (This night is cold) Und der Wind der bläst (And the wind that blows) Durch unser Land (Through our land) Und wer jetzt noch geht (And who is still going now) Ist ein Armer Tor (Is a poor fool) Oder auf dem Weg, zu der Liebsten (Or on the way to the most loved one) Die jede reise lohnt (who makes every trip worth it) Ohhh Öffne mir, lass mich hinein (Open up for me, let me in) Dein Liebster steht im Mondenschein (Your lover is standing in the moonlight) Diese Nacht ist so kalt (This night is so cold) So öffne mir (So open up for me) Denn Morgen wird's zu spät sein (Because tomorrow will be too late) Mein Vater wacht über Haus und Hof (My father watches over the house and yard) Meine Tür versperrt ein Eisenschloss (My door is locked by an iron lock) Und ich habe keinen Schlüssel dafür (And I don't have a key for it) Es führt heute Nacht kein Weg zu mir (There is no way that leads you to me tonight) Ohhh Öffne mir, lass mich hinein (Open up for me, let me in) Dein Liebster steht im Mondenschein (Your lover is standing in the moonlight) Diese Nacht ist so kalt (This night is so cold) So öffne mir (So open up for me) Denn Morgen wird's zu spät sein (Because tomorrow will be too late) Doch die Nacht ist so kalt (Of course the night is so cold) Endlich öffnet sie ihm (Finally she opens up to him) Und sie küsst ihres Liebsten kalte Stirn (And she kisses her lover's cold forehead) Diese Nacht ist so kalt (This night is so cold) Doch sie öffnet die Tür und er küsst sie (But she opens the door and he kisses her) Sieben mal dafür (Seven times for it) Ohhh Öffne mir, lass mich hinein (Open up for me, let me in) Dein Liebster steht im Mondenschein (Your lover is standing in the moonlight) Diese Nacht ist so kalt (This night is so cold) So öffne mir (So open up for me) Denn Morgen wird's zu spät sein (Because tomorrow will be too late) Der Morgen graut (The morning is dawn) Und der Wind der geht durch unser Land (And the wind that goes through our land) Doch das Mädchen liegt in ihres Liebsten Arm (But the girl lies in her lover's arm) Und danket sehr der kalten Nacht und dem Wind dafür (And thank the cold night and the wind very much for it)

Thank You soooo much for the translation! This song has touched my soul but even deeper with knowing what the story is really about. I absolutely loved this!!
@chrisrudolf9839
@chrisrudolf9839 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for providing this good translation. Let me (German native speaker) just help out with two little things: 1. The second line in the first and last verse should be "the wind it blows through our land" (not "that", the "der" is not part of a relative clause here). 2. The "doch" in the 3rd verse in this context should rather be translated as "yet" or "but" than "of course". The night being so cold is what makes her change her mind about her initial refusal to let him in. Fun fact: The number seven in the language of poetry and fairy tales is often used as symbolic for completion or infinity ... just for those who wondered why he should kiss her exactly seven times. When interpreting this song, there is a good point to be made for taking the whole "night and cold wind" situation as symbolic, especially because of the strange emphasis on the fact that the cold wind blows "through our land" (where else should the wind blow, you don't normally emphasize the country when talking about local weather conditions). It could symbolize hard times and/or a figurative "hostile climate", maybe there is a civil war and the man's and the woman's families belong to opposing factions, maybe they belong to social circles that aren't supposed to form connections. She falls for him and decides to be with him despite what her family wants because he faces all those adversities and puts everything at risk for her. At the end of the song, they found each other and things improve for them (symbolized by the coming of the dawn), there are still difficulties to face (the wind still blows), but they will face them together and she is thankful that the bad situation they went through made her decide to take the risk and be with him. Of course I could be overinterpreting it and the song could be just about a guy who wanted to sneak into his crush's chamber at night to get some naughties and she initially wants to send him away because the family expect her to be a decent and chaste girl, but then she let him in anyway because it's freezing cold and the dumbass hasn't brought a warm jacket ;-).

German is a heritage language for me, my mothers side. We are from Iowa, USA, since the early 1900's. Great grandma came alone as a girl of 17. When I was growing up she stayed winters with us and so she and my mom occationally spoke German and I imagined I would remember some words and phrases. The first year of the pandemic I didn't work, heart condition. Im in my sixties. I decided to study German using Duo lingo and other sources on line. I alwas loved Faun and looked forward to perhaps understanding these songs. Just now, I find I can! With this song. It has simple enough lyrics and with those I can extrapolate the other meanings. Im thrilled. Skoal to the beautiful music makers!!

How much German did you learn on Duolingo? I've been dabbling in both Finnish and German on the same platform. I wouldn't say that I'm close to functional though, after half a year.
@sandrag1481
@sandrag1481 Жыл бұрын
@@oldtimehockey7123 You need other sources of learning. Duolingo is just fine to gain vocabulary and a sense for the grammar and even grab enough sentences for a very small conversation. But to really learn a language you should watch films, listen to music and translate the lyrics, read books and if possible, try to find native speakers to have conversations. You need a way into the language, and as long as you can't travel into the respective country and stay there for about three month, you need to do it the frustrating way. I'm German by the way and trying to learn french. So I know your struggle, it's real.

Yes, I know exactly what you mean. I think it is fascinating. I'm german and understand everything, but I do have these feelings listening with songs in languages I can't understand as well. When the music is true and passionate then you feel whatever the song is about, you don't need to speak the language. Feelings tell their own story, music is something very special to all of us.

fred müller Ich bin 17 und hier aufgewachsen, also deutsche.

This night is cold And the wind that blows Through our land And whoever walks now Is a poor fool Or on the way to the one you love Who makes every journey worthwhile Oh, open to me, let me in Your beloved stands in the moonlight This night is so cold, so open to me For tomorrow will be too late My father watches over house and yard My door is locked by an iron lock And I have no key for it There is no way to me tonight Oh, open to me, let me in Your beloved stands in the moonlight This night is so cold, so open to me For tomorrow will be too late But the night is so cold At last she opens to him And she kisses her love's cold forehead This night is so cold But she opens the door and he kisses her Seven times for it Oh open to me, let me in Your beloved stands in the moonlight This night is so cold, so open to me For tomorrow will be too late The dawn is breaking And the wind is blowing through our land But the girl lies in her love's arms And thanks the cold night And the wind for it
