I want to take up painting now that I'm in retirement & I'm finding Fauvism, an art style I never really understood until now, quite appealing, and one for which I'd like to try my hand, though I don't know how to paint as yet. The lecture seems to imply that Fauvists chose colors based on how they "felt". I'm not sure I could do THAT, as I don't consider myself a terribly deep emotion-based observer of life. My question, then, is how did the Fauvists go about constructing their subjects on canvas---did they choose colors as they went along, based on how they felt toward the components of the scenes before them, drawing out the scene first, applying colors directly from the paint tubes onto the pre-drawn image, knowing the colors they'd use after plotting it out in advance, or simply apply the paint randomly, as surprised as anyone as to how the overall effect of the finished product turned-out? Based on the paintings shown, some of the scenes seem imaginary, not based on an actual or "real" place or setting, so how were these envisioned in terms of design & color-choice? Just curious but would like to get out there & try---to try becoming a Fauvist over a hundred-years too late!

Hi, Jack...Do not try to "understand" any art style except in the art historical sense. If you want to try your hand at Fauvism, just google Fauvism and look at the work. Immerse yourself in the style. Then simply "go for it." As far as I know, all the locations painted by the Fauves were real. They used the colors to create a pleasing artwork - nothing more. Never over-think art. Artists don't - despite what they might say! Think of creating art as like decorating your living room. You might buy a blue couch because you like how it looks. Then you might put red pillows on it...but they don't "work" somehow. So, you try some other colors until you get a combination that you like and seems right for the room and the look you are trying to create, etc.. Painting is the same. Let me know how you are doing with your art. I did not reply earlier because (believe it or not) until this morning I did not realize that I could reply beyond clicking "like". Life always supplies us with new knowledge!

Quite well done and explained. Even the French pronunciations were accurate ( except for Monet ) My only quibble...background music. Too loud, unnecessary constant. The ear can be pulled in two different directions as it is here. We have a person speaking and in the background,we hear music. Especially when the music is something we are familiar with, the ear focuses on it to the detriment of the speaker’s message.

I made this video 8 years ago before I got proficient on how to use the software. Thus, the music tends to be too loud. I am much better now. I just loaded a new video you will want check out on Modern Sculpture. Yes, I tend to pronounce Monet in an American way. Hard not to! Anyway...thanks for your comments and support.

+tofuru4 - Failure to resist is complicity. Trumpanzees are at their roots uber-conformists, herd creatures. They need to know that while their herd is large, a larger herd isn't having any of it. I'm too invested in this strange country to turn it over to them...

Susan, I am beginning to experiment with Fauvism. Are the dark and light areas to be painted with cool and warm colors, or is there no rule?
@susaneuler9462
@susaneuler9462 Жыл бұрын
There are no rules for Fauvism. Choose the colors that work for you. If you try something, and it does not look like you hoped...try another color until the work suits you. I have a video Color in Art that may give you some ideas about how color works. Thanks for the comment.
