Another idea to make a wiggle wire is to buy a small, cheap spring and stretch it out...different sizes and thicknesses of springs make different designs!

Hey Debbie. It has been a while since I have heard from you. I so glad you wrote. Great idea. I have used that little spring inside of a pen. That will work for a thinner piece. Thanks for watching and your support.

Hey Denise. Thanks so much for watching. I am glad you enjoyed it. Try the wiggle wire. I love that pattern. Just remember that the clay needs to be on the soft side or you will have trouble getting the wire to slide through. Good luck!

Great tips and I love how you made the shape of your mug with the cone,I'm going to start doing that with my mugs.and if I flip the mug and have the wider side to the top and can shape it that way too. Thanks again can't wait to try the cone cup.

Hey Heidi. I find that that cone shape seems to help keep my handmade mugs chances of warping along the rim to a minimum. Go for it. Thanks as always for watching. We appreciate you.

@@heididerksen8227 It is that darn seam that wants to straighten back out. The inward cone shape helps with that plus the fact that I stretch the rim outward a bit so it cant try and straighten back out. Give it a go.

Lovely effects from these techniques. I’m curious about what you do with the excess clay that gets underglaze on it? Do you recycle the clay? If so, how do you avoid discoloration in the clay from the underglazes? Another lovely tutorial?
@annruel1982

Hi Ali. I actually put all the contaminated clay into a bag to itself and I use all those scraps for other projects like agateware or other techniques where the mixed clay is actually preferred. Doing these videos...I use that bag of clay a lot. Thanks for watching. ...Oh, and if you are using underglazes as the colorant, you can also just sponge off the excess underglaze that has gotten on the scraps so that the clay is not contaminated any longer and you can just either put the clay back in your regular clay bag or put it in your reclaim bucket without worry.
@alilaforce7233

That's clever. I never thought of just sponging off the underglaze. Thanks for your response :)@@annruel1982

I took a plastic school folder and cut out squares and triangles. Then, I used some of those fancy edge scissors and cut into the edge of my sq/triangle plastic cutouts. Voila, fancy edges to drag through clay.

Would you mind sharing the dimensions of your template?
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hey Lacy. As the template is rounded, it is difficult to give you exact dimensions on the template. I can describe the way I made the template and you can make one for yourself. I purchased a large styrofoam cone that you can get at the craft store. I cut the center section of the cone out that fit my dimensions for the mug I wanted to make. I just discarded the bottom and top part of the cone. That center section became my mug mold. I wrapped plastic wrap around the styrofoam mold. I rolled out a slab and fit it around the cone, cutting away the excess clay leaving a nice mug shape of clay. Now I cut that slab opened and laid it on a piece of cardboard and cut around the slab. That became my template. I hope that helps.

Hi Willem. Did you look in the floral department of a craft store for a large styrofoam cone? Those are my favorites to use. Just cut off the top and the bottom for the size you want. I have one of my friends who use orange plastic safety cone that you would find in the road...they sell them in the hardware stores...for her Christmas trees. Your way will work too. Good job. For straight cylinders I like carpet tubes. They come in all sizes. I called the carpet store and they saved one for me. Good luck

When rolling out my clay, why is it sticking to the bakers mat?
@annruel1982
@annruel1982 Жыл бұрын
Hi Julie. My guess is that your clay is a bit too wet. If you let it stiffen up a bit, that will help. You can also put a little bit of corn starch on the matt if nothing else works and see if that helps alleviate the problem for you. Good luck and thank you for watching.
