This video tutorial shows how to fabricate a stunning silver ring made in a filigree style. This project is appropriate for an advanced beginner. I feel like this basic idea can be modified in many ways to produce a variety of looks. The material I used were: 14 gauge round, 14 gauge square, and 18 gauge round that has been flattened with a rolling mill. Don't despair if you don't have one of those--you can hammer it flat if you'd like. This video is a bit longer, but is a complete tutorial, so I think it is worth the watch time. I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful?

Love this ring ! I havent used my rolling mill yet because it came covered in grease. I'm afraid of removing it and then ruining the rollers. Do you recover yours in anything when not in use ? Mine is just like yours. You should do a tools video about what you use and care. Thanks for the tips !

Mine came covered in grease or cosmoline or something. I just cleaned it off and haven’t had to coat it with anything. I oil the gears occasionally.

So I'm wondering you seem to have a lot of scrap pieces of silver. Well not a lot but it will add up rather quickly. Do you recast it for wire or resell it?
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Greg. Much of it ends up as freeform castings like bean or broom castings. The rest I generally sell back to Rio Grande for credit. I occasionally cast a little ingot if I need some really thick silver. Good question:)

Hello Ride for life. I mention the size and shape of wire near the beginning, but also list it in the video description. These can be obtained at most jewelry supply operations like Rio Grande. Hope this helps.

This is awesome! I always have trouble figuring out sizing the rings, but this makes me wanna start practicing with rings! So when you split the shank you should always cut a little extra length? Also, when you finish and make sure that it's the right size on the mandrel do you push it down to see if it's the correct size or should it just easily fall down to the right size on the mandrel? Hope I'm making sense with that question. 😅
@chadssilversmithing
@chadssilversmithing 2 жыл бұрын
For me, adding a little extra compensates for the filing I’m going to have to do to get the ends neatened up, and if I’m a little off on the size, it’s easier to remove a small piece later if need be than to add to the length. Once you put it on the mandrel, lightly tap it into round to see where it falls. With this style, you could probably stretch it slightly with a little downward tapping to the ring if need be. When finished, it should fall down the mandrel and land at the size you were shooting for. Hope this helps:). Thank you for watching Heather!
