I have found putting a very even fine water mist over the varnish immediately after the varnish is brushed on also helps keep layers smooth. It extends the drying time a little but worth it for a nicer finish. Also thinking some embossed card could be nice , as I dont have an engraver but do have a big shot and some embossing folders. Lovely gift Nic, thank you for doing all the thinking and sharing :)

Don't have a laser jet but Google tells me there are 3 businesses in my small town that do have! I think it would be awesome to make o Victorian do-dah with a photo inside and engrave the front and back of the holder. Then lay down gold foil and paint it blue and varnish the awe shucks out of it. Good thing you gave me something new to think of Nic, I'm in-between and just making stacks of fabric flowers. They'll come in handy sometime.

Dont have a laser. Hubby will never let me get a laser. But...... Find a rubber stamp you like and stamp with versa mark or a clear embossing ink. Cover with clear embossing powder. Apply heat untill melted. Apply the ink color you like on the entire surface. Go crazy, put the ink pad on the paper and get a good even layer of color. Wipe the embossing with a cloth or paper towel to remove the excess ink. Now cover the entire surface with the project with your clear embossing ink, then with clear embossing powder. Heat untill melted. Let project cool. Cover with clear embossIng ink then with clear embossing powder. Heat untill melted. Repeat this step untill you are satisfied with the results. It usually takes 3 to 5 coats of embossing powder to achieve a smooth surface. If you cut out a piece to mount, etc then run the heat gun over it for a few monents so the sides remelt and are smooth and glassy. This will work, but it is not engraving. Sigh ....

So am I right in thinking that using Mod Podge might turn the finish into GOO (GOO DOLLS)? Hahahaha This look FANTASTIC! I can see making a little trinket box. 🙂

Hi Moira =) I made this file. I've been thinking about listing it on Etsy, it just needs to be double-checked to make sure its all copacetic.
