Nancy Drew reminds me of Christmas and New Years. We all got Nancy Drew books for Christmas (the boys got Hardy Boy) then we spent the rest of our vacation reading. When we finished our books we swapped them and read everybody else's book.

Just stumbled onto your channel by chance and you had me smiling ... I read Nancy Drew books when I was young and have kept all of them. So nostalgic for me. I still love reading to this day and am always reading. I would have the same problem if I filled a candy dish with candy corn. I watch my sugar as well so I would have to fill it with pistachios! Hope you find a solution - I guess you could just leave it empty or wrapped hard candy would last a lot longer. Take care and Happy fall!

This is a wonderful video. I like hearing about your favorites. One of my favorite fall things are pumpkin muffins and pumpkin or salted caramel tea. I do decorate my home with fall decor but not too much Halloween, I loved, loved Miss Pettigrew. I think the movie is worth watching. I love the Flylady. Today is "The Weekly Home Blessing Hour". P.S. I have to say I am a organized, tidy person but I like the Flylady zone cleaning.

I laughed out loud when you said dead people are not coming back to haunt you. 😂 For real!! I had heard Jamie Jo Wright was good about writing ghosty stories that end up explaining the "ghost" instances. That is why I finally picked one up. I had started The Haunting of Bonaventure Circus, but didn't get too far before dnf-ing it, because of the ghosty part. Now that I know about her, and have read one of her books and experienced it, I want to revisit the circus one.
@mitzireadsandwrites
@mitzireadsandwrites Жыл бұрын
Yeah, dead people don't scare me. They're dead. 😂You and I should talk! This ghost thing is one of my struggles, so I think someone like you could help me sort through this lol. Like Silent Companions has a ghostly type theme and it didn't bother me because the message ended up being don't play around with witchcraft (fyi not Christian and there is some violence at the end) same with The Haunting of Hill House. Others celebrate witches, etc. and oftentimes tries to make the reader sympathetic toward them. Does this make sense? Still trying to work out my own boundaries with this one.
@littlehousema7162
@littlehousema7162 Жыл бұрын
It sounds like we probably think alike on these issues! I can overlook things if there is a solid explanation at the end for them. I can't do glorifying the evil or stating ghosts are real. I read a Simone St. James book recently and it was all just haunted school everything and I was like, "Nope, I'm out". I read until the end thinking there would be an explanation, bur no. If you're going to tell me a ghost story and you actually believe ghosts could be real, haunting people, I'm out. I can do magic if it is fantasy and not witchcraft. I can do spooky if it is clarified. I can read about evil stuff if the truth comes out in the end. I can read immoral stories about people if the immorality/sin is not glorified, but is told in a way that makes me sympathetic to their lack of knowing truth (makes me want to tell them about God's love). It is hard to draw a firm line, sometimes, because some situations are not as clearly black and white as others. I read a book last year that was not one I would recommend to anyone, but it made me look at the people around me the way God would look at them, instead of judging them for their sins. That was not at all the intent of the book, but it had thay effect on me anyway. So, for me, in that moment, I could overlook language and closed door inuendos, because I was suddenly viewing the characters as every day people around me and the struggles they go through and feel sympathy that they are lost and broken. A book that was violent or had evil, but shows that witchcraft is a bad choice might work for me in the moment. I have never read a very popular series because I read enough to feel convicted about it's content to just decide not to start. Many Christian friends chose to read it. I have no problem with that. Everyone has different convictions. But many know the bad parts and justify it and recommend it, and that is where my bad feelings come in. That was a LOT! 😂 Hopefully, it comes across okay... 😊

Hi Mitzi - thanks for sharing things outside of your wonderful book collection! Love the felt jack-o-lantern you picked up in Homegoods - missed that one up here in Maine - I got a cute felt ghost this year from them. Loveeee that you still love to wear penny loafers - they will never go out of style! I have quite a collection myself - quite colorful too - as I tend to wear alot of black myself and like to add splash of color with accessories. Thanks for the recommendations - I will be definitely be adding the Laura Purcell book, The Silent Companions to my list as well as the Agatha Christie recommendation, By the Pricking of My Thumbs - have another Tommy Tuppance I haven't read yet. The Shirley Jackson books sounds good too! Have a great week - and hope you get some cooler weather soon. As has happened up here in Maine in the past couple years - we hit September and get heat wave weather 😰 feel bad for the kids just returning to school ( we return late up here in the North ). Fall is my favorite season too - especially for decorating. My mother had a dish very much like the one you inherited from your husband's family - I suggest you find some decorative acorns to fill it with! I recently purchased some from Etsy ... adorable! enjoy your reads this week! Jacqueline

I remember having a pair of penny loafers! Mine were brown and we actually put pennies in them. This has been a great list of books. Agatha Christie, Edgar Allan Poe and Sherlock Holmes are all favorites of mine. I read seasonally and fall is my favorite season. In September I lean towards dark academia and witchy books. And I love cozy mysteries all year long. Your wreath is gorgeous🥰. I love scented candles all year long too. In September and October I also like apple scents as well as Yankee spiced pumpkin. That’s my favorite, along with Autumn Wreath. I’ll be getting my decorations out this week now, I wait until after Labor Day. I agree with nuts in the dish, which is beautiful by the way. 🧡🎃🍁🍂🧡

It is cooler in California this week too. Here there is no fall season except in the mountains. I love going to get apples in Oak Glen. Apples are grown there, and they have apple picking and berry picking. They used to have lots of apples. Now they have a little. Most of them are brought in from Washington. That's fall to me. The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde is a fun fall read. Its not scary at all. The premise is an American family moves into an old castle in England. Its supposed to be haunted but the family doesnt believe in ghosts so they are not concerned. Its really funny but has a sweet ending. I know you dont believe in ghosts but this has an interesting twist in that the ghost becomes a primary character in the story. Its very short and a quicky, fun read.

I’ve never read By the Pricking of My Thumbs. Adding it to my Oct TBR. The Haunting of Hill House and The Silent Companions we’re just spooky enough for me. So many great recommendations! I love button-ups and black loafers! Mine aren't penny loafers, just loafers, I think made by Clarks. I am glad to know about the Dr. Scholls ones and will look out for them when thrifting. I live in Wisconsin, so we generally don't get as hot as you do, but this has been a very hot, dry summer. No matter the temps, I am always ready for fall. I read Something Wicked This Way Comes when I was too young to appreciate it. I think I was about ten and it was just super creepy to me. Recently, my husband and I watched a movie version of it (I think it was Disney) that was pretty good. I should read it again now that I am older and can appreciate it. I loved Boo by Rene Guteridge. It is so funny, but heartwarming and full of a great faith message. I want to read the rest of the series. I also haven't read The Haunting at Bonaventure Circus and was think fall would be a great time to read it. I was just putting out fall decor this morning. I added my fall wreath to the front door. My son gave me a beautiful mum for my birthday last week that looks really nice by the front door. I forgot about my candles. Thanks for reminding me! Another fun video Mitzi! We are crazy about fall in my house, im actually a little worried about the 14 year old she is obessed. She was just pestering me today about getting out the decorations and she is doing a countdown like Christmas only for the first day of fall. She told me she would die if there isnt a fall candle burning that day. We did pull out the fall themed puzzles. Our favorite fall book is of course a middle grade, Squashed by Joan Bauer. I cant think of another book in our collection with all 10s written inside the cover. (We date and score our books after we read them and this one was passed around middle school, its a well read copy). I did enjoy Boo! I loved that she hated Halloween in the book. Another fun book is Rumer Goddens Mr McFaddens Halloween, Halloween old school and interesting Scottish traditions. We also pull out our fall themed Brambley Hedge and Flower Fairies. Oh and Cobtown Pumpkins From the Sky? and our Sleepy Hollow that has the same illustrator as the Cobtown books. Thank you, thank you for the content I know your recommendations will be edifying and thats what we are looking for. LOL I just recently bought a pair of loafers that are super cute. I bought them for this fall. I have a narrow foot too and it's hard to find a proper fit. I have a high arch too. My grandmother used to chastise me for going barefoot as a kid. "your arch will fall" Well, that never happened! My mom had to take me to a special shoe store to order my shoes because I had a triple A heel. i loved that shoe store. The people were super nice and would always give me a ginger cookie. Just added the Poe book. I read Sleepy Hollow to Prometheus when he was elementary age and I was so surprised at the lexile level! (of course this depends on the edition).

You have Cinderella feet!! Yeah, I still love bare feet lol. I was pigeon toed and back then they made me sleep in a bar and I had to wear corrective shoes. I think it was just a gimmick and I probably just grew out of it, but it was horrible and kids teased me. I think that's why I love shoes now. I mean, I could be wearing a potato sack, but with those black loafers I feel good about it. 😂

@@mitzireadsandwrites Oh man, I'm sorry that happened. If we went to the same school I would have stopped that nonsense! I threatened to beat up anyone who cruelly teased. That's so funny you say that about Cinderella. I think I have the feet of the step sisters! I've noticed that pigeon toed runners are somewhat faster or have a more explosive start than straight footed runners. Sleeping must have been so uncomfortable. One of my uncles by marriage had to sleep in the back brace, because he had Scoliosis. I had never known until I was 12 and the family went camping. We had to share a section of the tent with his sister and my uncle (my mom's brother) and I think he was embarrassed by it. I asked what it was and why he had to sleep in it. But he should have known I wouldn't tease him. He was about 4 years older than me. His mom, my nana by marriage, called me the hot dog kid. EVEN as an adult! LOL She'd give the grands cookies and I'd ask if she had hot dogs. Thank you for sharing your story. I love this about booktube. And I forgot to mention I like your loafers. I need to get started on my reread of The Secret of the Old Clock! I do wish I had done some research before purchasing, though because I had no idea they had changed the story over the years. LOVE the cover of the Dana Girls book! I've never heard of them, so I'll have to try to remember to look them up! Oh my gosh, And Then There Were None is my favorite Christie! Love Hallowe'en Party, too and it's usually a reread around Halloween for me. I am going to start By the Pricking of My Thumbs when I finish Taken at the Flood, which is my current Christie. Totally agree about The Hound of the Baskervilles - a great place to start! That one is also often a reread for me, as well as Sleepy Hollow! Gonna pull my Penguin English Library edition of Poe Tales off my shelf and read The Fall of the House of Usher because I'm not sure that I've read it. The Haunting of Hill House is a good one, too!! I’m also a scardy cat lol. I also prefere the older horror classics. I remember reading one of those pulp horror magazines. It must’ve been in the late 70s early 80s. The story was about a graverobber stealing and wearing a stolen ring and his hand slowely started to decay. I had nightmares for months after that. lol Yes Agatha Christie is always fun. Did you read any of her romance books? When she wrote under the name of Mary Westmacot. I normally don’t gravitate thowards romance books, but hers are very good so I hear.

The graverobber story sounds fantastic!!! Call me crazy, but I'd love to read that!! I can handle that kind of scary because it's so absurd! 😂I do have one of Agatha Christie's romance books, but I haven't read it. Thanks! I'll try to squeeze it in soon.

That edition is just one someone created on Amazon. It's not a great one and if you look close, that picture on the cover isn't great quality either. Great video. I think you would like the 1963 movie of THE HAUNTING. It stars Julie Harris and Claire Bloom. It is a classic and, in my opinion, it surpasses the book. It's that good...no special effects...no blood...just stark atmosphere and dread. Also check out the 1983 movie version of SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. The movie is beautifully filmed and contains all the elements of Bradbury's novel. Yes. I agree that he was a genius. Just one more thing...FAHRENHEIT 451 is also a superb example of Bradbury's great writing...and the movie with Oskar Werner and Julie Christie does justice to that visionary novel. Best regards, Gerard Denza Author of the Edward Mendez series

Oh my ...Mitzi, BOO is sooo good! And its a great series! The female main character is a "Martha Stewart" wannabe and the elusive, misunderstood main male character is a "Stephen King" inspired character who became famous with his "horror" books and his hometown has capitalized on his books. Well, he has been introduced to Jesus and his spirit has been convicted to stop writing so much horror! The town is mad and then there is a big mystery in the midst of the story! It's a fun series! Put nuts in your candy dish. I’ve moved the Pym book and Miss Pettigrew up my list and I want to read the Sherlock Holmes and Silent Companions. S. C. sounds like good creepy fun! But I’m going to trust you that it’s not too scary, as I’m a coward and when I’m alone, the scary books and movies come back to haunt me. So I stay away from scarier ones now. I had the greatest used bookstore find last week in a nearby small town. Got there and it was locked with a sign and phone number saying he might be in the stockroom. Called three times and finally got him, and he said “I’m at the grocery store and I’ll be there in 4 minutes.” And he was. You wouldn’t have believed you could find anything in this packed bookstore. But the man knew his stock so well! Didn’t have my D.E. Stevenson etc. But when I asked for Miss Read, he came out with a dozen that I didn’t have and many I hadn’t heard of before. He also had By the Pricking of my Thumbs! So that’s for fall too. I know you understand how excited I was to find all these great books and this bookstore, because it seems like you share the love of a good book hunt. It feels like finding treasure, doesn’t it? I was absolutely thrilled!

I want the Miss Read books! My heart skipped a bit when you mentioned a packed bookstore. 😂My husband doesn't understand why I could love it since I don't like clutter at home, but I just KNOW there are treasures to be found. Silent Companions is spooky, not scary, BUT there is some slight violence at the end. Just wanted to warn you of that. I'm the same. I quit watching horror in my 20s because as soon as I was alone at night, those images would haunt me.

@@mitzireadsandwrites Mitzi you would have loved this bookstore! He had to retrieve books because it was so jam packed full. I told him before I left, I couldn’t leave a messages on his phone and he said, “Oh I don’t know voicemail or anything, you just have to catch me.” 😂I actually ended up with duplicates of Return to Thrush Green and Celebrations at Thrush Green. I’d love to send them to you if you don’t have them, but start with Thrush Green which might be on Libby or your library if you don’t have it. I just tested positive for Covid yesterday 😩after flying home from visiting grandchildren last week. So I may not get it out right away. I saw your post box lately and jotted down. I’d much rather give a book to someone who appreciates it than sell to a used bookstore. I’m exactly the same with the scary ones, I love a good scare but can’t handle by myself anymore. I can take fake things, but not ones that can actually happen. Miss Read books are about as far from a scare as you can get. Very cozy. More character than plot driven. I’ve only read Thrush Green so far, but could tell they were for me.

As always, I added new books to my list. I don't believe I have ever read Bradbury and need to try one. I do have that first Boo book to read this fall and want to get to either Dracula or Frankenstein. Outside of those, I tend to lean toward cozy books in the fall, even if they aren't set in fall. Something about fall just brings out all of the cozy feelings. I dread winter, but fall is so wonderful. The smells, the holidays, the fun activities, the foods and drinks... 😍
