Funny how no one mentioned the simple hack one lady had on her hand-- she used an old glove, clipped off the tips and used that as her rag (she didn't have to hold a rag). I remembered someone else on another channel mentioned using a wristband as her rag. Thanks for these; would love more!

To see artists contently working with their favorite (probably well curated) set of art materials on-site is inspiring. It tells me that it CAN be done! I have such a hard time deciding which supplies to take with me... my "just in case" bag gets way too full!! These women are no doubt wonderful at working with media on hand too. Those "what can I use instead" moments tend to teach me that simplicity gives more time to actually create. I'll get better at it eventually! I'm impressed by all of you! Thanks!

My "just in case bag" is so full that I don't take it out much! I do use it to pick a few things to carry with me when just going to café or walk in the park or walk in the city. I'm trying to just do rapid outline sketches when out and about, I take a few photos too. Then when I get back home I look at what I've done and pick a couple to develop more by further drawing, or more usually by painting watercolours over the underdrawing that I've sketched. I'm finding that by doing this, I'm gradually discovering my "light carry set" to take out on the next session. It's always modifying and changing, but that's good too. I get to see how different materials work for me in different situations. Next step is a lightweight folding chair, so I can plonk myself down anywhere and get into plein air!

Great to see you guys having fun and showing the variety of favourite sketching tools. I don't have any favourites yet, I'm still new to this and so I'm trying things out at the moment. I haven't joined a sketchers club yet, but I share my art with family and friends and a couple of other painters who give me feedback. I did see some urban sketchers in the city where I live (Madrid, Spain) a few weeks ago, so I've been thinking of looking them up one day. For now, I take photos and sketch from them, or when sitting outside at a café I sketch people or scenes around me - either with pilot V5 pens or mechanical pencils or graphite pencils or Sakura Koi Brush Pens. If I have more time, then I sometimes use a water-filled brush and a small watercolour pallete or I use oil pastels.

It's so strange when I see those simple black line and watercolor paintings I really like them but when I do my own idrudge mine definitely and to me they look like a kiddie drawing. Mmmm

There is a whole art style called "Näive Art", which could be considered as having that "kiddie" style that you mention. We should never be put off by how we or others perceive what we draw, the value of art is the creative process. Just allow yourself to express freely without any judgement. Later, if you want to achieve a certain look or style, then that will come with more practice. My art is also quite child-like at times, but I feel that it's the inner child within me that is being expressed on the paper. For me, it's fun and interesting to see how my painting and drawing is developing and changing as I keep practising. But I don't have an end goal on how I want it to look like, it's always surprising me how a drawing or painting starts off until it's finished. I try to have a "soft" critical eye towards my own work, observing where I could make improvements for the next one but still feel good about having produced something that before was just a blank piece of paper.
