9 m2 core xr6. Best compromise between fast turning and easy to control. Smaller kites are prone to smaller steering mistakes and big kites turn slower. Kind of like driving a crisp shorts car versus a semi truck, but not a crotch rocket. Also rigid canopy with great feedback.

You make a good point about the "developer size". When Ken Winner lived in the gorge we watched the evolution of the Rebel (my first was 2007). I remember flying a 2012 Rebel 8m which became my "bread and butter" kite replacing my 2010 10m. We started saying "8 is the new 10." (I actually just flew that 8m the other day and it still holds air!).

My favorite kite is my pivot 5m, I do foil from 14knots to 25knots with it, then I do surf with it until 40knots where boosting comes with a TT which happens not so rarely here in Marseille. Hangtime with the pivot 5 is pretty correct in this kind of wind. Also, I do love my Flysurfer Sonic 11m for boosting in 20knots, there are no other kites that could give you this thrill! Finally the 8m kite has the most polyvalence, foiling from 10knots surfing around 17 and boosting around 25knots which could be the one kite quiver.

I tried some different kites in different sizes. Greater 10 is always slow turning, smaller 8 is always nervous. Meaning I end up with kites between 8 and 10. But I think the answer to your question is ALWAYS biased by the kite itself. So, someone liking his 12 will say that 12 is his preferred size even though he would like the same kite in 10 better, or another in 9. Same for kite shapes, I personally don't like softkites at all, so a Tube in 12 is better than a Softkite in 9. There are a lot of factors biasing the decision of the favourite size. 😉 Maybe it would be better to ask: What is your favourite kite in your quiver and why?
@OurKiteLife4 жыл бұрын
Valid points. Going back to tube kites, we used to fly Rebels and loved the 5 strut stability. Do you prefer 5 strut kites or 3 strut kites?
@0xhexdec4 жыл бұрын
@@OurKiteLife again, hard question. High aspect kites tend to have 5 struts, like most C-kites do. 3 struts are more the all-round design. That said, I love my 5 Strut C kite and my 3 Strut all-rounder. It's really difficult to answer. It depends on the discipline. For example, I can't deny that a Soul has more hangtime than my 3 Strut Enduro, or the XR6 boosts higher, a Vegas unhooks better or a Drifter drifts better. But all that counts for ME is to have the most fun on the water with the equipment I like the most. And that includes the best matching Kite in my preferred size. I have more fun on the water using my 8m with a foil in 12 knots than a 12m or something with a Twintip. But that's me personally so I would be interested in what other people like and why rather than what they think it's the best size. Sorry if I sound grumpy or something, that's not my intention 😶, just want to clarify that I think the most important thing is to know what you like the most an why. only if you can answer the why, you know that you have found a good kite for you. And "Because others ride that too", or " it's the perfect windrange for that kite" is not a good reason 😉 keep it up, cheers 🤙
@OurKiteLife4 жыл бұрын
@0xhexdec I think that was a great answer! As long as you know what style of riding you want to do. With that said, our observation is that - at least in Toronto - most people don't know what style of riding they prefer, as it seems that most riders buy whatever is cheap or whatever other people ride. From what we've gathered from the industry, 3 strut is more of what market demands, and it's cheaper to make, but not necessarily better. Used to have 5 strut Evo back in the day, not the same as 3 strut Evo. Also, one of the best LEI's we've ever ridden in medium to high wind, was the North Rhino '07 with whopping 8 struts... that kite was a hot rod, but too much bar pressure
At this time i am 95kg and i prefer the 9m most of the times no problem with hang time, the kite shape makes a lot of difference some 9m kites will go upwind in light wind while the 14m will feel heavy and slow. It offers more possibilities between unhooked and hooked. With chops and waves it is easier to control and go full speed while edging. Because it turns fast you can recover during a jump if your jump gets messed up. Also with waves i can go up the wave, turn and go back down before the wave crashes. If you can only jump kickers within a short distance from shore, you can still generate speed with the 9m which is harder to do with the 12m and 14m. Usually safer if you are doing self launching and landing. On snow i found smaller size kites that turn fast to be better than big heavy and slow kites specially when it is gusty. And finally in general it is less expensive than bigger kites.

Curious if you've flown the Rebel before, and how you'd say it compares to the Orbit?
@92Timoxa4 жыл бұрын
@@OurKiteLife actually I had a 9 and 12m duotone Rebel before the orbit. On the 9m I would say that the first moment of the jump on the rebel is unique, I've tried a lot of kites (bandit, radar, switchblade, pivot, eleveigh RS/XS, supermodel, evo...) None has that power on the take off. The hangtime on the rebel is also something special. However, the orbit is way way faster and more responsive. There is no delay between the impulse on the bar and the response of the kite (like on the rebel). Kiteloops are also super smooth and as I'm starting to loop higher I was looking for a faster kite. I tried the 9m in 30knts gusting 35 and I wasn't completely overpowered (I'm 73kg for 176cm). I mean it was super strong but I could manage the kite. I also tried the 12m in 12/13knts last weekend and imo the rebel has more power on light wind. However the orbit is much easier to loop. In conclusion I'm not disappointed at all with the orbit.

what do you think about other sizes in soul range?
@pabloricciardi18864 жыл бұрын
@@OurKiteLife In my spot the winds generally go from 8 to 25. Very few times in the year it exceeds 28 / 30kn. with 10kn and a tt 139 * 39 I go perfectly. with 12 kn I'm jumping and with 18 in paradise. I have a psycho 4 15m and it starts at 10kn. but in 19 he is a beast without restraint. I have tried a soul 12m and in 12 / 13kn it works very well. but it is more expensive to move it to jump. 10m have the right balance. speed, maneuverability and range. that yes. I would like a soul 7 or maybe 8 for cumbuco and brazil

As I see it, I think that depending on your weight, board and winds in your spot you can choose a soul size. This will replace two kites lei in rank. now, the smaller the soul changes the paddling speed and maneuverability. hang time is 50% more than a lei and the most efficient upwind. I always think that for each style there are a couple of models that meet. but I also know that 80% is freeride with simple maneuvers, most of them hooked. there, soul rules. you just have to know how to choose the size

Our Kite Life I use it 95% of the time. Awesome kite in this size. I add 4m line extensions in low wind conditions and I can ride from 10 to 30kt. Also I don’t like to send kiteloops with smaller sizes as I found them less predictable and 12m is too slow. 10m is the best of all ✨😄
