Not long after Fawlty Towers ended, John Cleese made a film where he plays a very Basil like character. The film is called , Clockwise. A hugely underrated film. I’ve seen it twice , once when young and once quite recently. Even though some elements are a bit dated it actually on the whole ages well. I recommend.

There are some classic lines in this episode like “This is not the Burma Railway” , “The Fawlty Towers Book of remembrance”. “2 down - twenty to go” “would you like Mohogany, teak?” “That’s the Ticket” and “I thought you meant linnen” ( as opposed to Limen, the name of the dead guest) , “Perro Microscopio” (meaning tiny dog) and so on. A true classic like all the other episodes although my favorite line of all is “I Know Nothing” spoken by Manuel from “Communication Problems.”

This episode and "Basil the Rat" are the most slapstick funny of the series, in my opinion. The actor playing the doctor is Geoffrey Palmer and he and Judi Dench star in a consistently excellent show titled "As Time Goes By" and I highly recommend it to you simply for your own personal enjoyment. Palmer plays things very brusque in this episode but his character in the other show is wonderfully fleshed out. I watch the entire show's run every year it's so good. I also agree with you on the Waldorf Salad episode. There is something a bit off about the actor's portrayal as the American. I would guess the British have the same feeling whenever they see an American actor doing a very stereotypical and not-quite-right British character portrayal.
@bighuge1060

And just as an aside, my favorite line of the entire show is from The Builders (I think S1 E2) where the builder keeps prefacing, "If the good Lord..." and Fawlty continues it, "...is mentioned one more time, I will move you closer to Him." Such excellent writing.

The American was a pretty stereotypical caricature that is probably more funny to Brits than actual genuine Americans so I can see why "Waldorf Salad" might have given you that reaction.

The humour lies a lot in the structure of the episodes. They are all very finely and rigorously structured. And Fawlty's frustrations and behaviours and lines. It's definitely not about "who do I like" or something like that. They are all ambivalent to some degree or other and rather cookie-cutter characters (the guests).

Ridiculous episode. Here's a redux. *guest dies* Basil calls 999/relevant parties: Hello, a guest has died in our hotel. *he then informs any friends or dependents of the deceased, secures the room. Informs new arrivals that they might be a delay, or a cancellation due to the occurrence* Sybil ensures his belongings are neatly sorted. Once removed. Manuel and Polly perform a deep cleanse of the room. The end.
