When Basil says 'It's perfectly Sybill, Simple's not well," John Cleese admitted that was him slipping up with his lines. These were filmed in front of a live audience.

There was a strike upcoming at the BBC when they filmed this and knowing this was the last episode they could film for a while they had much longer to rehearse it and it shows, the sharpness and fizz in the dialogue is even better in this episode than others, and that's some standard.

It's playing on a very British thing (maybe not just British) that's not so prevalent today, that people didn't discuss problems in their relationships or life in general back then. Put on a brave face and don't let anyone behind the curtain... Great post again Josh. I loved the guy picking holes in his story too 🤣

The one thing I do love about this episode is the dynamic introduced by the Roger character. Most audience avatars in shows are straight parts, seeing the situation for what it is and grasping its absurdity, but here he’s this mischievous presence who’s not buying Basil’s routine for a second but plays along to see where it’s going. He’s laughing along with the audience in a really convivial way, enjoying making Basil squirm while holding no ill feeling. If Basil had just honestly explained to the guests that the party was supposed to be a surprise and Sybil had thought he’d forgotten, she’d have come back, found all her friends waiting for her, realised what he’d done and Basil would’ve been vindicated. If he’d been honest, it all would’ve worked out perfectly. But by this point in the show, we don’t for a second question Basil lying, of course he’s going to try and save face and cover it up even though we know it’s obviously the wrong thing to do. I love shows where you can put the characters in a situation and they all behave in totally predictable ways because it’s just obvious what they would do. My favourite example is the Bomb episode of The Young Ones.

Ken Campbell (Rog) was the most amazing character. This was about the sanest part he ever took. He put on science fiction plays which went on for days (he did most of his work in the theatre). A genuine larger than life eccentric; I only got to see him once - doing some stand-up for an arts charity thing - & he was totally charismatic. He died suddenly at 66. Much missed. R.I.P. Also Una Stubbs (his wife in this) died recently. She was just lovely. Every bugger keeps dying lately ...

I always loved the ending, when Basil locks Sybil in the kitchen cupboard just to keep her there so he can explain everything in order to save their marriage, threatened by mistakes on both sides (Basil for pretending to forget the anniversary and angering Sybil into walking out, and Sybil for storming out and not giving Basil a chance to explain that he did remember their anniversary and leaving him to lie to their friends).

With each passing year the cast of amazing actors still alive who appeared in Fawlty Towers gets smaller. Una Stubbs, who played Alice, was a sweetheart who never presumed that anyone would know who she was. She died in August 2021.

I almost can’t conceive a life where you didn’t always have Fawlty Towers in your life. I watched it in my early childhood in the 1970s. It’s part of who I am. I mean, I’m not Basil, or even Sybil, but, still, it’s part of what makes British people born in the 70s who we are, I haven’t watched any for so many years, but how I guffawed, especially that brief scene in the kitchen.

Watch _The Royle Family_ at some point. A comedic, yet painfully accurate depiction of growing up in the Northwest of England. It wasn't filmed in front of a studio audience, and you'll probably recognise 1 or 2 of the actors from other things.

John Cleese has said that he thinks this is the weakest episode and the one that hasn’t stood the test of time for him. He puts it down to the fact that there’s no real reason for Basil to perpetuate these lies, and also the absence of any taboo (such as sex, dead bodies, crime, gambling etc) makes it less funny. I’m with Cleese on this. It really is the weakest episode. But it’s interesting that Fawlty Towers at its weakest is still a damn sight better than some other shows when they’re at their very best!

I'm with you. It is a favorite of many others, apparently. But for me since this starts with pointless cruelty on Basil's part and then spins into nothing but unnecessary lies, it is just too hard for me to muster any sympathy for Basil in this one. And that makes it less funny to me. Yes, he's an utter bastard in all of them, but they usually start from a semi-understandable expedience or from his basic character flaws and they spin out of control. The previous episode is a great example.
