I honestly thought no one but me knew this game existed. None of my friends, my family knew but that's because I played it. It was one of the first games I ever completed at a rather young age. I can't count how many times I played it. I just found this video today and it's nice to finally find someone who has not only played it but adores it like I do. Thanks by the way, I have to play it again now.

Excellent. Thanks for this playthrough! Faxanadu is the greatest NES action RPG, in my opinion. There is something dark, wondrous and magical that happens as the story, gameplay and music of this game blend, to create something greater than the sum of its parts. Heroic fantasy with a twinge of shadow, that bleeds atmosphere. You can almost smell the dust on the path as you travel over and through the crumbling ruins woven throughout the roots of the world tree. Ancient palaces laden with mouldering tapestries and moss covered stone, bearing mute testimony to denizens long gone or corrupted. Disfigured abominations lying in wait within secret alcoves of mysterious fortresses. Strange fables that call to you of fountains in the sky, and wingboots to take you there. This game was a masterstroke of pacing and progression as well. You feel yourself journeying deeper into the dim, claustrophobic interior of the world tree as you go along, moving upward through the trunk. Eventually, you reach cloud elevation and enter the eternal night of the land of mist. A haunting world of nightmare, where you can feel the dampness on your skin as surreal, grotesque monstrosities emerge from the cold fog to feast on your flesh. Through these slick, labyrinthine byways you travel, delving into houses and palaces of horror, before finding the onyx stone and emerging out of the suffocating mist into the aptly named Daybreak, where light once again floods your path and you find yourself high within the stratosphere, meandering through the branches of the World Tree. After discovering the Battle Suit, Battle Helm and fabled Dragonslayer sword you are ready to step from the uttermost edge of the World Trees limbs and begin the descent into the labyrinth of the Evil One, who journeyed to this world on a fallen star and has corrupted its denizens and natural beauty. After the final battle, peace is restored to the land, and the crystalline waters begin to flow once again, only for our hero to set forth on his next adventure. 'What a restless guy!" You feel yourself making true progress through the game and story by virtue of this evolving landscape, without the game holding your hand or forcing the notion upon you. Seeing your equipped weapons and armor was novel at the time and was another layer of visually represented progression that reinforced the sensation that your character was growing and becoming more adept throughout the journey. Finally, enough cannot be said about the music. Jun Chikama's score for this game might be the best soundtrack for any game on the system, evoking stirring adventure, goosebump inducing terror, regal splendor and mysterious wonder all at appropriate times to perfectly heighten immersion. I wish the original team had gone on to make a 16 bit sequel on the SNES, but alas Faxanadu remains a singular experience, that may never again touch an audience in the same way, or have the same impact it had on those who were fortunate enough to discover it around the era of it's release. Mantras and Monsters, Daggers and Wingboots await you, indeed!

I would love a sequel to this one. I have a painter friend that did a scene of the path the hero walks right at the beginning of the game towards Eolis, and that's framed and up in my house above my desk. I adore this game.

This is the best description of this awesome game EVER!! You got the nail on the head with everything that makes this game a real masterpiece!! I thought it was the most tragic that the grotesque and twisted monsters were once regular people going about their day, and how the tainted water source made everybody succumb to this terrible deformation and corruption. That distinct tragic undertone juxtaposed with the strange stoic and jaded denizens absolutely hooked me when I was playing this game as a kid.

38:38 - when you said that, it struck a real deep sense of camaraderie. I say that about Zelda 2 all the time, still remember spending hours on it in 1988, and then beating it almost 20 years later as a grownup. Amazing work, thank you for this!

I rented this game back when I was 10. I didn’t get very far in 2 days as a kid and never got to play it again. I have always wanted to finish it, and amned if your channel didn’t convince me to play it. I just beat it a few minutes ago. Holy crap. It may be cuz I lost all my young me NES skills decades ago, but I had a helluva time getting through the challenges in this game. Boy is it full of random punishing mechanics. I really felt like I accomplished something by playing this through. A may have thrown the controller a few times, but I’m so glad I did it. I know it’s no ghouls and ghosts hard, but it’ll stick with me forever. Thank you for passively demanding I play it with your channel And the classical guitar covers of the Mantra entry screen music are amazing

To sum up the story, for anyone confused: A meteor came down from the heavens, with the Evil One inside of it. I'm not sure how, but it started corrupting the dwarves, and in desperation to prevent the Evil One from obtaining their most precious weapon, the dwarven king swallowed it. You restore the fountains, defeat the Evil One (which yes is an alien), and then continue on your journey. Restoring peace to the land and the tree of life or whatever it's called.

Awww thanks :) I should probably just upload some stream archives here for fun. I'll add some Ultima IV stuff to this playlist from when I was streaming it blind, but with the good help of a friend or two. I don't have all of my streams from Ultima IV, but there'll be some blind play if you're still interested in that. I've had Faxanadu since I was a kid and loved it to death. When I got older I always wanted to find other similar games, and I've recently learned that Castlevania II, Battle of Olympus and Zelda II are all quite similar in many ways. I've played quite a bit of Zelda II but haven't tried the others, so that'll be really exciting for me once I get around to it. Thanks for the encouragement, as always :)

Soundtrack, atmosphere, jumpnrun/battle gameplay mechanics, visuals/design, length, and of course some flaws, no other game does it all. :) I love that you use its music for your intros. Also thanks for the inspiration. Going for non-magic runs never even came to my mind. I never saw a faxanadu player e.g. not using deluge in the first part of the game. Everyone always spams it, but you just dodged the spiky things even though you were near death, you still just wouldn't use it. That's commitment to the art. :D If you like challenges like this do try the randomizer mods. Would love to see you do a run !

Found out that this music was written by Jun Chikuma, who worked for Hudson at the time. Since Hudson was rolling out the PC Engine/Turbografx right around this game's release, much of Chikuma-san's work was on that console. She also wrote the soundtracks for most of the Bomberman games, though those are very different games than Faxanadu.

@@hungrygoriya I’d listen for a while at the password music too!! I played Faxanadu in Japanese on Famicom, and I remember my dad and I were mind blown that Faxanadu displayed kanji (Chinese characters) in the dialogue (since kanji is so complex, Famicom games usually never used them.) But what was unique is the items (like Red Potion, Wing Boots, Deluge, Studded Armor, Death, etc) were displayed in English, so it was a bilingual game. My first English reading lessons came from playing Faxanadu with my dad teaching me how to read them and the meaning behind the words. I felt so cool playing the game and understanding foreign words!

You know what modern game loosely calls Faxanadu to mind for me? Control. The setting of the game is a building that serves as a connection between different dimensions. The reason why it makes me think of Faxanadu is because the building, which is in New York City, is the World Tree Yggdrasil of Finnish mythology wearing a "modern skin", that connects to nine worlds. The nerd in me likes to imagine something from one world contaminated another through the tree.

To be clear, Control doesn't play like Faxanadu or look like it in any way. 😁 It's only through extrapolation of mythological concepts and a lot of reading between the lines that common threads pop out (mainly making the concept of a world tree make sense in a clever way in a real-world setting).
