4:03 can't we see F1 as acting upwards (supporting mass M1 up, since without it, the mass will fall downwards) and F2 as acting downwards on it?

I thought that the arrow x1 always indicated positive direction. But that doesn't seem to be the case at 1:25

Hi Jonathan Have you derived the equations assuming that the system is static (i.e) the spring and mass based forces are in equilibrium and no external forces are involved?

Since force due to static deflection of spring cancels out weight of the body..

@@gani3a9 can you please elaborate it ? it's still quite tricky to to me - I think there still need to have the gravitational force for sufficiency of illustration
