The lack of gloves part is the most sobering for me. It makes sense, but it signifies an implicit understanding with the technician that they're trying to keep you alive, but you're going to lose your hands. Oof.

The whole suit is also only a limited protection. If the device goes off, depending on the mass of the explosives, chances are, due to the pressure increase, all the "hollow" parts of your body will explode, that is lungs, eyeballs etc. What the suit is extremely good for is keeping your body in one piece.

Its actually very smart, you are using the water as an explosively formed projectile that is traveling so fast that it destroys the bombs internals before fuses can react or wires can send signals or a charge. The different ways you can force the water as a knife, jet or wall means it can even cut through metal cased devices or rip them apart. The composition and simple construction of these devices means that you can pretty much assemble them anywhere in the world and with few moving parts minimises what can go wrong.
