The withdrawals associated with an opiate addiction is a very serious thing. It makes otherwise good people do almost anything to make that pain go away. It's easy for people who haven't been down that road to be judgemental against someone who has.

He only got three years. That's not bad. TBH I agree with you, being sentenced for using/being addicted to drugs is idiotic. This guy wasn't sentenced just for possession though. He stole evidence and lied about it. He should have gotten way more for that. I don't think anyone would argue that a junkie who robs a bank to fund their habit should be treated as a medical issue.... same for this guy.
@user-ec2kd8sz3t7 жыл бұрын
The one silver lining of his light sentence for being a corrupt cop is that he got 25 people out of prison for (mostly) nonviolent drug offenses. In that way I think he did really well. We need more people like him willing to stop ruining people's lives just because they used or sold drugs.

Our country must look to alternative sentencing to get our incarceration numbers in line with the rest of the world. Putting non-violent drug offenders in an $85,000/yr cage is crazy expensive & hurts families.
@chelleoj9 жыл бұрын
Abba Okoro Do we catch criminals more than other countries? How did u come to that conclusion? What u even mean by 'catch'- r u referring to our solve rate or arrests or convictions or what? We should care what happens elsewhere because when someone else succeeds where we fail, we should at least look to see what if anything we can learn from them.
@chelleoj9 жыл бұрын
Abba Okoro Where do u research to get your information? Every statistic u provided is wrong..Canada does not have a 20 yr cap on murder sentences. They give indeterminate sentences with a minimum & a maximum. The longest a person can be sentenced to serve without being considered for possible parole is 25 yrs. Japan does give lighter sentences, but violent crime is rare. When it does occur. They have the death penalty & life w/o parole. Italy does have prison overcrowding. They do not give everyone 5 years probation- if they did, the prison wouldn't be crowded. There are multiple reasons. 35% of their prisoners are foreigners. They have long delays waiting for cases to go to trial. Finally, they are like the US- sentencing people to serve time for relatively minor non-violent offenses. All of this is beside the point. Our criminal justice system is broken. There are countries with more effective systems. We can look to them for direction- this is already beginning, with drug legalization. Restorative justice is quickly gaining popularity. Do your research.

chelleoj I couldn't agree more. I find it disgusting how we demonize people who do drugs. Drug addiction is a form of disconnection. Putting people in jail further disconnects addicts, making it impossible for rehabilitation. The war on drugs is an absolute failure.

Sorry, but all the reasons that made this guy an exceptional human being are exactly why he has to go to jail.
