David: Thanx for a clear and concise explanation of the T51 Recall. I've been waiting for my official invitation to bring my 2015 3500 in for service but as of yet have only got a letter that stated that "there IS a problem" and "we will contact you when we are ready to service your vehicle." So in the meantime, we wait and hope that we don't break down somewhere in the boondocks of America! Keep up the great work! Best to you!

Thanks Marcie! Glad I could help spread the word. I would call up the dealership and have them "actually" check to see if the parts are avail. Then schedule an appointment to have it inspected to see if its even needed. No need to wait to hear from them. Appreciate the kind words and support!

I put 360,00 miles on my ram with the 6.7 Cummins in that time I put 4 waterpumps on it most of the time the bearing would fail and the pully would get wobbly. it's one of the easiest water pumps to replace but the belt is a bugger to get on.
@MotorCityMechanic

I fully agree.....I have done the waterpumps in the parking lot when ever required and that belt does take more steps for sure.

This is possibly the best place to rant. Only because i respect your channel . You helped me save money more than once. Here we go my 07 dpf was full , looking underneath i could see there were going to be problems. Clamps , hoses , limited room . Not knowing names hoses if they break . Stuff like that. Because of a bunch of circumstances i ended up getting a delete . Not that it was i wanted .i just wanted a new dpf . I could have done it in a week or two myself . Not enough direction on line to do that . I kept all my stuff and still would like to go back to what i had. The information you provide in your vids would help a lot of people do what is right. We dont want North America totally smogged out. YOU CAN DO IT

Currently there is a global shortage of HEMI water pumps. Dealer has had my Jeep for two weeks. Water pump not due in until mid March. Not a recall situation but if your HEMI loses a water pump in the 5 year 100K or 60K warranty, they are out of stock.

Two words I hate to hear......BACK ORDERED! I wish I knew exactly how that all happens and why. Its a part of the industry that you rare get to see or learn about. Hopefully they can change the status of your repair/order to show that the vehicle is down. I certainly dont like the situation and I feel your pain. Sorry that it happens from time to time. I hope it gets there very soon so you can get back to enjoying and driving that Jeep! Thanks Craig for watching.

hey - there is one more step in a recall that you didn’t mention - that is when a water pump fails BEFORE any recall. that happened to me during a trip to colorado. AAA took me to a diesel shop in Johnson Village, CO which charged me $568 including 4.5 hours labor - not 1 hour. when i got back home i asked my dealer about ANY recall. hey - said there is none. any suggestions ? my truck - 2011 ram 3500 with about 100,000 miles at that time.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
The issue you will run into is that the recall applies to 2013-2017 so your truck wouldnt be included in that recall and there isnt any recall on yours related to the waterpump. I hate that the shop over charged you for such a easy repair.......not cool at all. Otherwise there isnt much you will be able to do being that yours isnt part of the campaign.

On the 6.7 you were working on as my truck it does not have a bleeder for the coolant system. Where do you bleed the system? I had to change my pump and inlet hose but now I notice the overflow bottle has more coolant. When I start the truck the level in the bottler lowered and the truck maintained normal temp.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 4 жыл бұрын
There is a banjo bolt up near the coolant bottle that I like to remove.....I thin will the bottle almost all the way to the top until it starts coming out that removed banjo bolt. Then reinstall the bolt. Leave the coolant level high and start and run the vehicle. I run it at 1500 rpm for about 3-5 minutes and then check the level. I also take it on a test drive and then let it cool off. Typically the level will drop down to were it should be....sometime I need to top it off. Just be careful and let it cool down before opening the cap on the pressure bottle. Thanks for asking and make sure to subscribe.

I just purchased the truck and it has all new tires and brakes on it from the dealership.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
I assume this is about the vibration. Tires can shake for more than one reason....there is balance and then there is road force. They can balance a tire all day long but if the road force is too high.....it will still shake. Having the road force checked is one thing. Otherwise a driveshaft/u-joint issue could be possible as well.

Keep in mind......Toyota and Ram dont make waterpump......they basically just assembly vehicles. 90% of all parts are out sourced to companies that specialize that certain item. Currently due to the design issue from a company the contracted to make the pumps.....there is a large demand due to the number of units needing to be replaced......that means there will be a supply issue for a bit. Cant just spit out 400,000 or what ever the number needed over night. Knowing people at just about every brand that works on these vehicles every day.....there is no perfect brand and they all have their own specific issues and common failures.

@@MotorCityMechanic I can tell you this much, Brand A is Coates, Brand B is GMB. Cummins ships engines ready to install we do little to them and likewise don't really have a lot of say who they use to fulfill the order, however, there is a list of certificated suppliers and sub-suppliers that must be used, they meet all the requirements of SAE and ANSI. What I suspect went wrong was low quality Chinese or Indian parts in the mix, presumably the bearing. Here is a good one for you, Tempken wheel bearings made in the USA right? No. In 2011 the entire production of roller wheel bearings was moved from North Canton, Ohio to China in 2011. Furthermore, the company went through a corporate restructuring in 2014 that spit the bearing and steel side into two separate companies. Stuff like that makes it increasingly hard to monitor part suppliers, and the number is actually around 18-20% outsourced. We still do make things, not the number it should be at as the final say comes from management, not us workers.

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
The thing is that the recall needs to be done...documented and then your vehicle removed from the list. Otherwise you keep getting mailers and possibly even calls telling you its needed. That means visiting the dealer. Now the thought was that I might do a future video showing the recall being done....thats the main reason I didnt use a vehicle in the video. As time goes by and I have the chance to do the recalls and find those that need it and those that dont....it will give me the footage I need for a possible video. But like I said.....recalls need to be done by the dealer.....even inspections. Paper trail paper tail. The government needs it and it helps FCA to cover their rear.

Eventually you will get a mailer telling you to schedule a visit to the dealer again. I have heard that most have it and some have gotten it done. Makes me wonder if they checked into it really. I didnt go over the details of the difference between A and B other then the vent hole. If the pulley is flush with the shaft of the pump....its from B and if the shaft of the pump extends out a small bit from the pulley and the pulley has a machined angle on the outer edge then its from A. The pump in the thumbnail has the style of pulley and has the shaft flush with the pulley....which means its a pump from B. An updated one however with the vent.

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
The recall pump was shown in the video at time stamp 1:25. There are two replacement types and they are based on availability and at the time of filming only one of the two versions was in stock so that I could show it so I showed the version we had. The recall doesnt include 2018 so you cant use the info in the recall about the vent or the design of the pumps that fell under that recall when comparing your 2018. We have to remember that not all pumps got replaced that fail under the recall. It was based on the pulley style and if it was a certain type, if it had the vent. Not all have a vent. As far as rust.....its bare metal and actually normal to see some rust.

My 2014 ram 3500 diesel water pump failed in November 2017. Sheared the pulley with the shaft off at the face of the pump. The pulley got wadded up in the belt and wrapped around the fan pulley assembly loosing all power steering and brakes! Dealer replaced the pump with the same one due to the new ones not being available yet. After the pump was fixed I could not get rid of the coolant smell and took it back to the dealer! When the pump failed it somehow popped the heater core? I think the pulley slapped the radiator hose creating a pressure spike? $100 dollar deductible on my $4000 extended warranty and a week at the dealer to rip the dash out. 3 weeks later upper radiator hose piece of crap plastic Y started leaking (another $100 dollar deductible)! Now beginning of February the fan pulley sheared off again loosing all power brakes and steering! Another $100 dollar deductible! Both catastrophic failures happened at 70 mph on the freeway. The second one I almost crashed into the side of a mountain trying to stop in a curve! My dealer did not give a shit about the fact that this is a deadly factor of events when you loose power steering and brakes! Had I been towing my 15000lb 5th wheel or a 30000lb trailer that this truck is rated at it would have gone really bad! This is my 3rd HD Ram truck and 6th Chrysler vehicle in 20 Year's! PROBABLY THE LAST!

I feel your pain and sorry for your experiences. Not sure how the heater core got damaged with that waterpump failure and also why it took them that long to replace. Its a 2-3 hour job at the max....I assume maybe the part was the issue as far as getting it. That y pipe has always been something I have hated. I found a company recently that makes a aluminum version that wont fail again....its certainly an option. blackmarketperformance.com/store/p49/13__Cummins_Dual_Radiator_BMP_Billet_Y_Pipe.html . Excellent video David! I'm starting to smell coolant but the level is not dropping. On the emissions recalls (6.7) do you know if they mess with hp or torque settings / detune the motor??
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
There is no reason to hook the scanner up to the truck for recall T51 so nothing should be changed. We dont have the ability to change items like that anyway. As far as the coolant smell. I would be more concerned if there was a drop in the level. You may be smelling the coolant bottle venting so at this point I wouldnt be concerned. Thanks Chris for watching and for the feedback.

Great video. What can you tell us about the track bar mount recall? My '14 Ram 2500 had this installed and now it pops and snaps randomly but mostly during a turn. Thanks
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment about the video. On that recall I would make sure that they tightened the track bar large bolt tight. They may not have gotten tight enough. Thats the one thing I would have checked otherwise the bracket itself should cause any noises if the track bar bolt it tight.

When this recall is performed, is coolant replaced, toped off, or reused? Do different Chrysler dealers have different protocols?
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on the tech. The drain is time consuming to get to so i unbolt the waterpump and catch the old antifreeze so as to not make a mess but I dont reuse it. I add new antifreeze when I am done. That means there is a mix of some old and some new being that the coolant level drops to just below the waterpump position when I take it loose. The procedure by the book is drain all the antifreeze.....test it to see if the mix is correct and if not contaminated....reuse. If not okay then replace. Thanks for watching and for the comment. Make sure to subscribe and hang around to watch some of my other videos.

So this morning we on a short 3 Km trip with her 2012 3500 6.7, never made it there . Both the wife and I smelled an odd hint of rubber , 5 min latter , no steering on busy road , as I am a mechanical guy , I knew that braking was my next issue ,yup..it was . Anyway I nursed it back to the safety of a parking lot and found the pump seized solid , which burnt the belt off within seconds , I was floored I driven Cummins since Dodge first put them in trucks and have had to change a half dozen pumps ,a couple on the road because of leakage but never had one seize. I am in Canada and am wondering if this warranty is good in Canada on our 2012.. Thank YOU sir ..
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 5 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear that happened. I dont know about the warranties in Canada.....that is a good question because I know it does have an affect on other things. I can only recommend calling Chrysler to find out. Nothing that I have had to deal with personally. Thanks for watching and for the question.

Hi David have you ever heard about Dodge Ram trucks having a vibration issue through the body / seat of the truck. Mostly around sixty to seventy miles hour.
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
I havent noticed anything personally on these. Comes down to making sure the tires are balanced. On some years there was a bulletin about some isolating dampeners to install but I havent come across the vibration that they discuss but they mention it has to do with the MDS operation, I dont thing that is related to your concern however at the speeds your mentioning.

Can I change this myself? No offense but I dont trust my dealer tech is going to do it with the care I will. Please let me know about this. FCA can just reimburse for just the part
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
If you do it yourself you will be coming out of pocket. Only way that FCA will pay for it is if the dealership performs the job being that the recall is now out and that there are parts avail. They have to be 100% certain its getting changed so that they arent liable in the future and they do that be having the dealers perform it. Also the vehicle will always be listed under the recall until the dealer submits the paperwork showing it has been performed.

If the truck falls under the recall then I would have that waterpump replaced. It might not be leaking now but it may in the future. The concentric is the one that is being recalled under that recall.

Dave, have you ever seen any problems associated with the a/c drip line that drips directly onto a wire harness on a 2017 cummins 6.7? My harness looming tends to have water in it? Any possible concerns? Thanks, awesome videos
@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
No issues that I have found. All exterior connectors have sealed connectors so the water cant make it into the connectors to cause corrosion. Otherwise it wouldnt be much more different then driving in the rain as well. Thanks for checking the latest video out and for the question Chris.

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
Well if you have the vent hole then you should be okay....no pump needed but still needs to be inspected by the dealer so that they can do the paper work and get it off the list and completed. As far as parts.....I feel sometimes the service advisors arent updated on what is in stock so if your asking them.....then it might not be accurate. Thats the case.....some times. Thanks for the comment!

@MotorCityMechanic
@MotorCityMechanic 6 жыл бұрын
First it depends on the vehicle and if it has the recall. If it does then I recommend letting the dealer check it out because they need to file paperwork on it and get your vehicle off the list if it does apply. Otherwise around the 10 o'clock position there will be a vent hole just behind the pulley. Thats the obvious difference. No hole then it gets a waterpump. Thanks for asking and for the commen.
