Australia’s biggest phone provider Telstra will hate this! Optus here is commonly known to be bad outside of the citys. But this will cover everywhere which will blow everyone away. I’m questioning if capacity will be a problem once everyone starts to move to Optus. I also live in a brick house so hopefully the service gets though and outages are common with Optus in my regional town

Joe, I switched to T-Mobile about 2 years ago. We have 2 Home Internet systems and 2 cell phones. I just switched my Wi-Fi off and checked my mobile speed. I'm get 911mb down and 19.1mb up. Unbelievable fast speeds. one of the Home Internet systems, along with Starlink is in my motorhome. Very happy camper.
@royrobinson4636Ай бұрын
Hi Roy 😁 That's impressive, I don't even get those speeds with Starlink Residential. My current average is about 200Mbps down and 20 Up. The fastest download speeds I've seen here were in the low 300's.

Thanks for tracking this. I am a T-Mobile subscriber and it's generally good but pockets are horrible. 3/4 of a mile from my house in suburban Houston (in any direction) I can get UC 5G and at least 300Mbps connection. At my house, 1.5Mbps. It's hard to even hold a phone conversation, if not for WiFi routing of the calls. I stayed with a son in the Salt Lake valley in Utah. In his basement, I was getting 850Gbps up and down! It was like a dream. I am hoping that DTC will eventually help erase these extremely steep curves of signal and make it more uniform.

As a kid, this was so futuristic as to just dream about. Now it's here! Plus, I grew up to be a firefighter and communication is imperative. I remember being so excited about the possibilities of Starlink being a new boat owner. How someday I would just have internet on my boat anywhere I was at. The reality hit....yes, you can have it as a mobile service, but it would cost extra. Then you were limited to 10 mph unless you paid more. Then if in the Bahamas it would cost even more, like $250 a month on top of $600 for the dish. So in 3 years for 3 months in the Bahamas I would spend about $1000 per year for those 3 months. I just cannot justify tripple the price for a 5% gain. I found that a mobile hotspot needing a $30 piece of equipment and a $90 a month service fee was connected 95% of the time wherever I went with no speed limitations. In the US I have 50gb hotspot on my phone, so not a problem. I fear that this will start tp be adding cost to my phone. Pretty soon my phone will cost $250/month for all this connectivity worldwide. If that is the case, I still will not use it. If Starlink was $120/month like stationary, I would definitely have it on the boat. I just cannot see where there is any additional cost to SpaceX for my roaming service and they only charge more for it because they can, not because it it is more costly for them. And how much bandwidth gets used on a boat anyway? Less than at home I bet.

This is a great news! I suppose there is no special setup on the phone when you need to communicate using DTC? Do you think those people who got stuck on the roofs were also able to use this DTC system during the hurricane Helene? Well darn. I'm about to buy new phones and renew in February with Verizon. Should I do it, or move to T-Mobile? I would think that something this revolutionary and important would come to all service providers, but I could be wrong. I also live in South FL and would love this feature for disaster communications. Thoughts?
@AscendingSpaceАй бұрын
I think primary function of DTC would be to verify the location of the caller ID. The STIR/SHAKEN protocol, while effective, cannot definitively confirm the true origin of a call. By providing this additional layer of verification, DTC can fix for good issues caused by spoofed caller ID numbers over the past two decades.

Investors funded first transatlantic and transpacific cables for the stock market to connect all the world markets, speed was important. Many private investors for Starlink saw all the additional advantages space could offer over land. Musk also owned his own reusable rocket company which was icing on the cake. Musk has stated his rocket company makes 4 billion/year but Starlink revenue could be 40 billion/year.

Hypothetical question. Why can't T-Mobile (or any other carrier) just add a Starlink front end into the phone? If the satellites have enough transmit and receive performance to communicate with a phone on the ground, why not do so on their own frequencies, instead of cell bands. The other carriers would have no argument of interference on cell bands if they are not using them. Then the other carriers would have to be honest and say "We oppose it because we will lose customers." Yes, different frequencies, but in a line of sight, it should not make much difference. Once connected via Starlink, it could use services the same as via WiFi calling.
