Just to clarify as I'm seeing a lot of comments from folks who haven't watched the whole way through: The FCC's move no longer requires cable operators to offer CableCards but it doesn't mean they are taking them all back immediately. Many cable boxes use CableCards to operate so it's unlikely we'll see support drop anytime soon. So if you have a Prime now you'll be fine until your operator drops QAM. But the order means CATV operators /can/ do it whenever they want.

I can't even return my cable box now which I don't even use and their system won't even allow them to take it off my account!!! So I'm being charged for a box that's not even hooked up and it's so old they can't even tell if it is or not. I kept the box waiting for the Prime 6 to finally come out so I can retire my Prime 3 or at least have 9 active tuners using 2 cable cards. Or even 12 tuners if I can get 2 prime 6!!!. Here we are two years later and the CableCard still hasn't gasped its last breath. I'm a long time TiVo user getting increasingly frustrated with their having mostly checked-out of the consumer DVR market. All of my streaming apps run off of Android TV boxes because the TiVo DVRs certainly can't handle them anymore. I've been looking at the "in development" page for the Prime 6 for years it seems, not even realizing that stock of the last run of 3s was still out there. I've got one now to experiment with, along with another HDHomeRun for OTA, and a Plex DVR. I'm just disappointed that Plex doesn't handle DRM and so most of the channels are unwatchable unless outside the Plex experience on the HDHomeRun apps. I wound up getting one for $175.00 when I worked for ARRIS after they bought MOXI. This is when I learned about cable cards. They rented for $5.00 each from Comcast. It was much cheaper then renting a cable box, but you still had to rent them. Eventually Comcast raised the price to almost $11.00 per month so they wound up costing as much as a Comcast cable box. Eventually ARRIS dumped MOXI and only provided support for it for two years. After that it all died. I never moved to TiVO afterwards. Been enjoying my HDHomerun Prime 3 for over a year. I have two nVidia Shield TV's, a FireStick 4K and an Xbox One S as my streaming devices. I also sometimes stream on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook Pro. This in my opinion is a better option than any of the streaming services out there. You don't save money from cutting the cord because you still have to pay for internet service and the streaming service which are expensive and don't offer all the channels as standard cable. And this does not count towards your bandwidth limit.

Cable tv technology is 40 years old from the patent level to market level. The coax cable has a physical capacity limit of 75-300 ohm the Omega symbol. So it is highly likely to lose signal and connect with the weather. @@riopato2009 Yes, it (InfinitTv 6) really does work well (enough) on Comcast. I had trouble with the DRM channels (like HBO). Yes, it can record it, but you can't watch it (other than on the PC that you recorded it on). So, that's kindof problematic -- sharing it around the house, is impossible. But, it works for normal unencrypted channels, which a good portion on Comcast are not encrypted. But, you have to use EPG23 or something like that to get channel guide. But, other than that and maintaining it some (like rebooting it -- because the encryption keys between PlayReady and the Ceton box will get screwed up ... or mine does, so a reboot will fix it ... yet, you lose some content because the signal was synced or something like that). Whatever, set-it-up and you'll learn quick -- just by doing. But, it's not for the "faint at heart", because you'll have to overcome a few obstactles that you just online forums for.

HDHomerun should crowd fund the Prime 6, like they did with the ATSC 3.0 box, to see if there is any interest. I've been waiting for them to release a 6 tuner box since my card has the ability to receive 6 streams but only 3 stream devices only exists when Ceton Corp killed their 6 tuner product! To blame consumers cutting the cord is the reason why cable cards is trending down isn't legitimate enough. The reason cable cards are trending down is because there isn't any content on cable worth watching anymore and those that are, are available online also. in most cases they are available before the actual broadcast! Also this hurts the consumers who record DRM channels only and it's because of DRM is why lots of consumers are cutting the cord. Because of this FCC ruling, all they did was gave torrent pirates more reason to steal more tv content and push more people to move over to streaming services. This will not only effect cable TV subscriptions, this will also place a burden on ISP demand which will eventually force these isps to cap consumers bandwidth usage and then create a domino effect of forcing these streaming service to pay for bandwidth licenses which will force them to raise subscription prices! This is a bad cycle that the FCC is creating and will not only hurt consumers but also hurt every business associated with distributing and creating content which will also effect even people like Lon.TV when users will need to decide whether to watch something on KZbin or TV show because of their bandwidth cap!!!!
@jasoncox55054 жыл бұрын
Exactly. I am in a Spectrum market and concerned the data cap limit will expire. Without cable card and WAH from the pandemic streaming has the potential to eat through data caps.
