This was the most easily understood video on damper shims I've seen. Great job on getting just far enough into the technical bits for it to make sense without losing it in an insanely complex topic.

Glad we were able to strike that balance - that was goal of this one, since shimming can be extremely complex and technical even if the basic premise of it isn't.

Such a "simple" design, yet oh so complicated with so many variables... that we all take for granted every time we drive our cars. Great video! Thanks for putting it together FCPEM and much thanks to Bilstein for sharing a little bit of their dark-art knowledge.

The amount of variables is when you start to appreciate how easy it is to get wrong and how difficult it is to get it right!

I'm curious what the advantages are compared to an electronically controlled dynamic damper?
@fcpeuro-media2 ай бұрын
Sounds like some good follow up content 🤔
@dirkhaney49126 күн бұрын
Biggest advantage of a passive damper is that it reacts identical in similar driving conditions. The control algorithm of electronically controlled dampers isn't that predictable - different brake pressure, steering wheel speed, vehicle speed can lead to different currents at the damper in comparable situations or same corner each lap. With regard to the conflict of goals in showing comfort and sportiness at the same time in one suspension there no way around electronic dampers. That's why you encounter them in more an more cars

Can a mono tube damper be also same comfortable as a twin tube damper ?
@dirkhaney49126 күн бұрын
Yes, no difference in comfort potential

@@dirkhaney491 from my experience mono tube (B8) were less comfy as KW twintube damper
@dirkhaney49126 күн бұрын
@@vollcare4076 Understood, but that is not a necessarily a matter of the damper system - just a matter of spring rate and damper tuning and thus part of philosophy
@vollcare407626 күн бұрын
@@dirkhaney491 B12 Kit (with B8 damper) has similar spring rates as KW V2 etc: But the KW is way more comfy
@dirkhaney49126 күн бұрын
@@vollcare4076 as I Said: that‘s due to the Tuning of the Dampers. You can always tune a monotube as comfortable as a twintube. So the philosophy for this Product is different at Both companies…

So.. what kind of oil is used..? That's a whole other variable.. along with temperature. But if I assume you keep the oil the same (or know what kind it is) then you can know how it will react to the shims. Then you have rod and cylinder diameter variables too.. this is quite technical. I run Bilstein on my two trucks and BMW, and know and trust they are the best on the market.
@dirkhaney49126 күн бұрын
Hi, we have two kinds of oil in Aftermarket business. One is for monotubes, the other for twin tubes. Biggest difference is that the twin tube oil has several additives against foaming

27:07 he is saying Supra.. but the steering wheel is VW.. must be in a different car but showing shots of the Supra leading into it..that's confusing, misleading.
@Thou1Ай бұрын
Listen properly, he clearly says at 23:55 they’re going for a tour in the Passat. He later says ‘when’ we take the Supra, referencing the future. Does a Supra even have rear seats? How would they have got the cameraman in the back?
