If you don't grease or clean those pins that the brake pads sit on, could that cause the brake pedal to be soft or cause the brake pads to not fully clamp the rotor when applying the brakes? For what it's worth, I've done this job and I let a brake line get loose and some air got in the system. Bled it, changed BMC, did SS lines on all four corners, pressure bled it, bled the ABS module, have no seized calipers and I still have a soft brake pedal. Not sure what to do at this point. 5:54 is the timestamp for what I am referring to. TIA :)

@ I had Akebono Ceramic pads and it basically took about 6-8months for them to bed in and firm up the pedal. There’s probably still air in the system/lines but at this point I don’t want to touch it anymore. What’s going on with yours?

@ Just take your time with it and follow the way they show it in their videos. I had my issue cause a friend let the caliper hang by the brake line and the flex hose backed out of the caliper and neither of us realized it until after I had driven the car and the pedal felt squishy. The air got in and messed up everything. Short of it is don’t let the calipers hang by the brake lines EVER, and make sure that you release the EPB with OBD11 before you do the job. Another tip, wire brush the hub where the rotor sits and add a tiny bit of anti seize to the hub so the rotors don’t rust weld themselves to it. Makes it easier to replace down the road. Any other questions just ask

Dont have a lift so the caliper brackets were a bear! Had to buy an Astro Pneumatic 1822 and a capri 21mm stubby impact socket, then jack up the wheel assembly an inch or so to be able to get them off. Had 1 click of range on my wera torque wrench and couldnt get them to spec but they shouldnt go anywhere. Thanks for all the info!!!

So no adhesive goes on the back of the pads?
@fcpeuro

Hi Chris, usually the residual is enough to hold them in place, the main thing is to get the dowel lined up, and the pad will stay in place!

I’m battling a pad noise on my 2015 A4 and suspect of the outer pad. Are you guys using any adhesive the way the factory did it? I’ve done about 50 brake jobs over the years and have owned 8 Audis, this one has me stumped. I always use Akebonos and prematurely replaced the last set when they started making noise, only when applying brakes. Switched over to OEM/Textars which did the exact same thing. The Textars had a sticky back, the Akebonos have shims but not sticky. I bought another set of Akebonos and trying those again (as an aside the Textars would have been a nightware with brake dust). Noise is across new rotors, cleaned up/pad slap and back to brand new rotors. Guide pins are greased and slide fine. No vibration, just noise. More grease on contacts points? Again, I’m hung up on outer pad and adhesive part…..

Instead of removing the caliper carrier to clean those pins, can I just flush the pins with brake cleaner and leave the carrier in place? When I did the brakes on the rear I left the carrier on and cleaned the area where the retaining clips install.

Sometimes when pushing the pistons back in you just have to pump your brakes a few times to get pressure back and the pistons happy again.

Do you need to do any break-in? Also do you not spray the rotors with brake clean to get grease or coating?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Aaron, bedding in the pads will be pretty standard. If there is a unique process required, those steps are usually included with the pads. You want to avoid using any break-clean when handling zinc-coated rotors to avoid degrading the coating.

Unless the hydraulic system was opened, pushing the pistons back into the caliper is only moving fluid that is already in there; no air is being introduced!

@jgizzy

Just spray a rag/napkin brake clean and wipe off the rotor face where you see dirt/grease. Not a huge issue, even if you leave it somewhat dirty it won't make a difference you will feel.

Torqued parts with lubrication do not represent final torque per spec. In some cases it’s almost double. Here I think you can get away with it as most parts are mold steel.

I can’t remember if it was the front or back but when I did mine I had to use a OBD scanner to retract my piston on the caliper. How did you do yours?
@fcpeuro
@fcpeuro Жыл бұрын
Typically that is going to be on the rear brakes on any VW or Audi that has an electronic parking brake. We use an OBD scanner. The best is the VCDS unit, for use with a laptop, but the Autel stand alone is a good choice if you do not have a laptop computer. www.fcpeuro.com/products/audi-vw-vcds-diagnostic-interface-ross-tech-vchv23
