Ristar (Game Gear) playthrough ~Longplay~

This is a playthrough of Ristar (also known as Ristar the Shooting Star) for the SEGA Game Gear.
Game Gear Ristar isn't quite as polished as the Mega Drive version, but it still has its charm. I had some good fun with it, at the very least.
I figured I should record this version of the game too given there doesn't seem to be much coverage of it on KZbin, at least not in the full, clean playthrough department. Hopefully this shall suffice~

Impressive graphics, big sprites, the best use of palette color in the Game gear. Good animations. Also is a long game with very different stages and music. I dont know that this game was reléase Official y from Sega, in 1995!!! Superb

It may not be the Genesis version, but I think this shows the worth the Game Gear really had. And those little details and new levels make it worth it despite the graphical difference.

I got to the final boss and he kept sucking me into the portal until game over. Very frustrating that the only way to stop moving towards the portal is to spam grab, how was i supposed to know that 😢 Still, one of my favorite games from childhood. A game gear gem for sure

Yeah I'm not sure if there's an "intended" way to dodge it, but mashing the button to grab's the only thing that seems to have worked consistently for me. It's an odd boss fight.

In the megadrive version, you're supposed to hold onto an enemy without destroying them until the attack ends. If you're interrupted by the second enemy, either grab them or pray the attack is almost over.

Even then the music ain't bad for Game Gear standards, sure some conversions of the songs sound a bit lousy and meh, but the original songs for the port sound great and some of the genesis songs like Ice Rink and the credits themes sound great and have the same feel as the genesis versions.

Not that the Genesis version is bad, but I found myself struggling to hit enemies and ended up missing or touching a hazard instead a lot of the time. Though, maybe I just need to get better at the game, haha. Ristar really is a good example of "easy to learn, hard to master."

The Genesis version is buttery smooth and hitting enemies shouldn’t really be a problem, not trying to downplay the Game Gear version but it’s built on what’s basically 1985 hardware, of course it’s not going to stand a chance
