In 1975 the New York Telephone building at 204 Second Ave caught fire...it caused the worst outage in the history of 20th century telephony partly because of flammable PVC products used in the building but also because of obstructed windows and doors....NY Telephone used plexiglass and steel reinforced windows to prevent vandalism which hindered firefighters progress....I watched as multiple ladder trucks were used as battering rams to gain access to the interior so there is precedent for this technique in NYC. The FDNY used everything they had to prevent further calamity that day and did an admirable job.

Matthew Erwin definitely something different! Really using the old noggin they used to say. If I may suggest a theory? It almost looks like to me that it was a spur of the moment move. Maybe he was given an order from a superior? Maybe not? I won’t ever know. But I can tell you from my experience during my career. If I had had an order to do that then o would not have worried about damage to the ladder. You can always say well Captain So n So told me to do it. (Where we live in Louisiana we do not have Lieutenants, only Captains and Chiefs.) Had I tried that without an order from a Superior and it works, GREAT, fine, dandy, we will throw you a parade in the streets. Had my little idea not have worked and I caused significant damage to the ladder, expensive damage $, very expensive damage. I can gaurentee that I am going to catch at least 3 poops hitting the fan!!! One from my Captain, then my District Chief, then my shift Assistant Chief, and maybe even get called into the huge office and catch it from the Main Fire Chief himself. The moral of my little narrative is it looks good on this video and it worked out this time! But make sure you cover your butt before you try something like this. Before your truck has to spend six months in the shop trying to get fixed while the city and insurance argue who is going to pay for the repairs and then getting the actual parts and you have to ride, drive , and or Captain a 35 year old spare that literally does not want to work anymore!

A medal? I'm all about being aggressive but potentially damaging a million dollar machine to peirce a structure is just beyond dumb. I guess there are no wrecking balls in NYC anymore. I would do this if lives were at stake, they were not here.

Rocky F the only reason why the FDNY beat the hell out of their rigs is bcuz the City of New York replace them every 8-10 years. They have such heavy call volume the rigs are never in first line service longer than 12 years max & that’s pushing it. Lol
@jasonwhitaker48835 жыл бұрын
Wow these comments from arm chair quarterbacks are great. All those white helmets there and people saying they want the ladder operator fired???? Why???? He was following commands orders! All those battalion chiefs were right under the ladder. They were getting frustrated because of no access to the fire. These old city buildings have those lofts that are almost impossible to access. They were justified in doing what they were doing even if they have to take the truck out of service for inspection. It’s their job to contain and put out the fire. That’s what they did.
@davidbott94015 жыл бұрын

Done in PDs too..attic floor window is taken quite often at right time to vent with aerial. Not sure if chauffeur was directed to do this. Not judging the brothers at all. Serious question: Why does it always look like half the city‘s fire and other emergency departments seem to respond to a single house fire like this and most just stand around/are on standby. Is it intentional overkill to be on the save side? Are emergency responses in other countries the same? (Haven‘t seen this for single house fires in Europe...but I haven‘t looked far on KZbin to be honest. :) )
@FDNYResponseVideos5 жыл бұрын
It does seem like a lot but only about 6% of the department was at this fire. The FDNY is one of the largest fire departments in the world and the reason they send so many resources to fires is to be safe, the fire has potential to spread to other buildings and its always better to have fresh guys working.
@blackstream86665 жыл бұрын
Preventive Fireprotection isn't as big of a deal as it is in many european countries, which I consider to be one of many reasons to keep a lot of units on stand by, in case the fire spreads.
