[FE:Fates] Fixing Peri

Makarov is the perfect example of a low life, Peri suffers from writing inability, as she could have been crazy like Henry, but Henry had a more humane and tragic approach to him, while clearly being worriless of what he sacrificed to make his curses work, Lissa's support comes to mind where he solves her sleeping problems by killing off some birds, If I recall correctly. What Henry, also has over Peri, is that he is a singular entity, unrelated to anyone in the army, but instead being related to the enemy army, thus, making him quite interesting to get to know, as you get to peek behind the curtain of the other side, when he mentions that Mufasa, a man you'd have killed not too long ago, was a kind and gentle person, which really adds more depth to the game's lore and made me, at least, feel bad for taking lives that way. I do like what you did, Jae. You got the memo, and understood the message. I do like Peri, in Heroes, where her personality and voice lines have that unhinged charm to it, and the voice actress delivers quite well on what she says. Great vid as always!

I agree Makarov for what he is one of best characters written, but personality wise he's a massive piece of shit. Just like how I think Valter is a fantastic villain but he's a piece of shit, same thing with Sonya haha. Peri might not be as well written as the three mentioned characters, but I wanted to highlight characters that are purposely supposed to be written to be awful people :)

Not to mention in Peri's festival support with Soleil (which never got localized) you can tell she's a completely different person. Telling Soleil that she shouldn't go crazy killing people and should think about the fact that those people have families that would be sad if they were gone.

I think what she needed was more supports that tried helping her start that changing process in teaching her that killing is wrong (basically more of Leo's except without the "maybe you're right" moment). I personally think she could've continued to be Xander's retainer, but (I'm going to take a page out of Ghast's book) she could've been assigned to Xander by Garon or Iago rather than him having thought with the wrong head when considering her.

Not really sure I'd agree that either Valter or Sonia are generally considered "bad" characters beyond them just being evil. That aside, this is an honest shot at righting one of Fates' many, many, many wrongs that doesn't really take much tweaking. I like it.

I think you did a pretty good analysis but personally I think Peri's main flaw is how over the top she is - Fates is a game with fairly serious themes about war, family, betrayal etc. but Peri sticks out as a cartoonish, bloodthirsty criminal who happens to work for the crown prince. Hans is about as bloodthirsty but he's taken dead serious. Let's say Peri only cries about half the amount she does in supports - suddenly, her outbursts are more impactful, but still way too common for someone her age. Maybe her bloodthirst isn't constant but caused by stimuli - a reaction to specific things, not everything that ever happens. She'd be more believable, without changing her actual character. Idk, I just think she needs more than a role switch.

Discussing the positives and negatives a character has is fine and should be encouraged. The only issue I have is when people aggressively say you should not like a character with the purpose of making others feel ashamed for doing so. Unfortunately this is quite common and I do not see it getting better. You can say you like or dislike a character but be please be considerate to those who feel differently and try to understand why they feel differently in a empathetic way.

JaeAIK what you said in the video was absolutely fine and in no way did you come across as demeaning or aggressive in the video. The only thing I would recommend is consider addressing the factors that other people find appealing in a character even when you don’t, this may help show that a character might not have won your favour but you encourage others to share what they like about the character in question. However, you can keep doing what you are doing now as I have no experience in video making at all and you seem to be doing well as you are at the moment. I am just glad to see that you share the same view that I do. Who knows maybe you could make video talking about this topic in greater detail (you don’t have to if you don’t want to, please do what makes you happy). Thank you.

I think you missed two very important points: #1: Peri is the spear and the will of Xander. To be frank, she is not only his enforcer/assassin (he points and she kills happily) but she is also incredibly ruthless in doing so. As for Laslow, he is his shield and is meant to protect Xander if he needs the help. This is shown for each one of the Nohr siblings (with the exception for Elise) and for good reason, considering the politics of Nohr. #2: Peri is nobility. This may shock you but Peri is held to a higher standard than others because of that. She is also considered a fitting bride for the royalty of Nohr as opposed to a commoner, considering the sort of kingdom that it is. Her actions are also excusable as Xander does use her for the good of the kingdom (arguably) by eliminating anyone that he wants dead.

Already I find this video to be more respectable to Peri than Ghast's video. I like Peri but will admit she has flaws to her character. So she isn't in my top 5 favorite girl in Fates. I am totally okay with having Peri swapping places with Benny -Charlotte- . Mainly because I feel Peri's main issue with her character is her position as a retainer despite being a blood thirsty killer. Edit: Please ignore this -Though my only issue would be what does that mean for Charlotte? Would she still be the same type of character she is if she becomes a retainer? Charlotte's whole thing is wanting to get with the rich so she can get a lot of money to send to her parents. And the reason she's a guard is to reinforce how desperate she is for money as obviously being a guard doesn't pay as much. If she's a retainer wouldn't that mean she's earning enough money already considering how high of a position she's in?-

You are right when it comes to hating on Peri it's like beating a dead horse, at this point I'm pretty indifferent, a lot of Fates' cast was designed to be pandering to the most amount of people and as long as people like Peri she's not the flat out worst character. I think your idea would've definitely worked and I definitely like this Peri more.

So what do people mean when they talk about characters not changing in Fates? That's not unique to Fates, but it is worse than the rest for the most part. The only instance I can think of that truly shows a character change due to supports is Jill in POR.

I think it's because every character has so many supports and the fact that not every player is going to go through the same ones in the same order. If a character does completely change in one support and the player starts a new support that show's the character's personality back to square one, it's going to be inconsistent. That's why characters in Fates still stay somewhat stay the same after a full support chain so that the writing can easily flow into another support. The game obviously doesn't have a system in place that creates new supports whenever a character's personality changes because that would take up so data on the game. Especially when the characters already have so many supports already.

I think one issue with swapping Peri and Benny's roles would be a bit of an imbalance in the gender ratio of all the retainers. Where it's there's an equal number. 8 male retainers and 8 female retainers. Swapping out Peri with Benny would just end up making it a 9:7 ratio and not an equal 8:8. It is a minor thing but it is something I noticed.

I honestly think Nintendo should rewrite/remake all of Fire Emblem Fates and launch it again for the Switch. There is SO much wrong with Fates and I've only played Conquest. I really think Fates has a ton of potential, and it just sucks that it's wasted.

Laslow fixed Peri. Check out convo between Soleil with Peri (Mother) and Peri stops being a cold blooded killer. For why Xander chose her? Garon chose Hans to serve as a GENERAL of Nohr so clearly Xander was raised to find use for people instead of having them rot away in prison. Peri is skilled and without hesitation would follow and order to kill even a member of royalty at Xander's command. There's also the fact of Peri's nobility being another reason to keep her alive, especially in an unwealthy kingdom, her assets while still belonging to Nohr, are still significant enough where it'd be better to keep her as a friend than a foe. Executing nobility also is a whole other mess and at times could lead to an entire civil war within the kingdom so Xander really did make the best choice. Especially during times of war when nobility can quickly switch sides, Peri living had to happen and Xander definitely has control over the situation. Ofc there's the Peri S support problems... But given the nature of the game's mechanics in a world with no canon pairings, the characters had to be bent to fulfill consistency.

Peri is really odd in terms of supports as some of them are good like Odin and Laslow but others are shit! Like Benny and Felicia. So she a strange character. Makalov is a big piece of carp that I never use even though he good objective due to he mounted. The worst part is.....he suppose to be your ally. So unlike Valter who is a villain which I am suppose to hate (he does a good job at that). But Makalov is your friend and never ever changes through the two games. Also he ruined Astrid.

I want to say, find the translated IF versions on KZbin because tons of dialogue were changed, some supports like the Siazo and Beruka one where changed from two assassins trading some of their back story in their C support to the english version of the C support being changed to .............. For tbe entire support.

But Treehouse thought it was to incestuous.

I agree with you on a lot of Fire Emblem stuff but not on this one. Calling Perri a "Bad" character shows that you are looking at the script in the wrong light. You are not supposed to identify nor relate to Perri. You are not supposed to identify and relate to Xander neither. Calling her a "bad" character because she is a bad person misses the point of the character. And switching her kinda hurts Xander in the long run. Perri is Xander's retainer and the retainers are a reflection of their master, both in actual history and in Fire Emblem writing. The support between them shows how mirrored the two are: Xander instantly results to forced to get his way, much like Perri. The only reason she isn't killing people is because of the possible trouble she would get into from Xander. Upon notice of her difficulties with the rules Perri is given extreme special treatment, just like Xander has the rules change to suit him or those around him. Just like Xander Perri's childhood has a trauma that she refuses to let go 'cause the person within it is seen as an anchor of herself, just like Xander and his family. The ending of the support shows that Xander will do nearly anything to get what he wants, even changing the system of an order or ignoring facts. Switching Benny with Perri not only goes against the retainer - master allegorical link but will do worst for both of the characters, since there is nothing but speculation to play on. And when speculation is key, then you might as well write fanfic. I see that most of the Perri hate come from the fact that many want to like her, but the truth of the matter is that (like Garon) you are not. Just like how you are not supposed to like Xander. Put personal feelings aside and look at the writing.

@@jaeaik That's the point to why I made the comment-- it's an opinion. You challenge opinions; you come to terms with facts. You argue opinions; you discuss facts. An opinion is not a fact. An opinion isn't an indisputable aspect of something. Writers paint characters in certain lights to draw out a specific response all the time. It's actually a big part of writing. If a character is shown in a negative light with no redemption, nor remorse, then chances are they want the reader to not like (or even hate) such a character. Your personal feelings are secondary to what the writer wants. You didn't make it-- the writer did. And analyzing if the writer wanted a certain character to be dislikable isn't flawed. If you are going to review, analyze, or theorize a piece, then you go with what the writer tried and wanted to convey in their work. If a writer writes a character as an ass, then that's how you are to see that character; despite your feelings. There is a right way to look at a story and a wrong way to look at a story. Both ways are built on how the writer wants you to see the story; not on how you feel like seeing it. Yeah, go back and look at it, if you have the time; but remember this video is an OPINION, thus it is clearly open for debate. This isn't fact-- I am not asking that you prove your video; I am just saying that your view of the character doesn't reflect what's in the story, and changing the story to your commendation will only hurt the reason why she is there.
