A lot of people don't realize that Fear Factory is a pioneer band. And they are credited with influencing bands like Static X, Machine Head, Spineshank, Chimaira, Coal Chamber, Devin Townsend, and Slipknot. Fear Factory are underground kings in the metal scene. And it sucks they don't get recognition much anymore. Not enough new kids hear them.
@jannicolas28506 жыл бұрын
You are goddamn right.
@mlorb12816 жыл бұрын
Not only credited. Its 100% accurate. They launched many copycats that could not match Fear Factory's level of talent. I remember people not believing how good Raymond Herrera was and thought he used triggers on his peddals but its been proven he didn't. He and Dino Cazares were just THAT in synch. They are/were a machine.
@Daedalus45 жыл бұрын
Not just that. Not only did they pioneer the clean/harsh vocal style, their trademark sound has influenced pretty much every newer metal subgenre, from Nu Metal to Metalcore to Djent.

Jason Pegram : it was quite a ground breaker when it first came out. So many bands owe so much to them.
@KyleS3m3noff6 жыл бұрын
For sure, Jason - I remember this coming out and a lot of people at the time HATING it because "it's not metal - I don't know what it is . . . but it's not metal!". These were the same people that called "Sound of White Noise" grunge because Anthrax didn't do another thrash album. Fans at the time didn't want to admit that thrash and traditional metal had gotten stale and needed to change and evolve or risk dying out. Nowadays it's pretty much universally regarded as an all-time classic and game-changer . . . but back then it fiercely divided people (keep in mind anything even remotely electronic sounding got called "techno shit" by most metalheads back then). All these years later and the double bass still sounds like a god damn triphammer. Brutal.

Kyle Semenoff anybody that thinks this is not metal need to have there head examined
@KyleS3m3noff6 жыл бұрын
It was just the era, man - that first half of the 90s was a crazy time for metal. Thrash had pretty much run it's course and wasn't going to go any further, and grunge had taken over the airwaves all around the world. A lot of metal fans hated on Grunge because they thought they were being misrepresented by it, but that's always been a large part of the metal mentality - it's the same people that shit all over a band like Linkin Park and never shut up about how "they're NOT metal!". They never fucking said they WERE, but a large amount of metalheads have a tendency to judge something on what they want it to be, not what it actually is. Anthrax had "Sound Of White Noise", Metallica committed the gravest of sins by releasing the black album. Megadeth were getting songs played on the radio . . . the 90s fucked with the more narrow-minded end of the community in unbelievable ways. A lot of them saw all this "selling out" and when Fear Factory came along, many of them thought it was selling out metal to the techno crowd (and that was BEFORE they released Remanufacture, the remix album - unheard of in metal at the time!). Time and distance has managed to make a lot of people change their original opinions, but trust me - if the internet had been around between 1990-1994, holy shit it would have been UGLY. ;)

not so much. some bands did it a little bit, like king diamond and mercyful fate ( same singer), but he technically didnt growl, just deapened his voice to imitate a demonic voice. the credit has long been given to Fear Factory for this achievement.

The first time I heard of them was at a Sepultura concert in Phoenix in the early '90s for their Chaos A.D. tour. Couple of bands played and then I heard the name "Fear Factory" and I kind of laughed at the name as did others in the crowd. But MY GOD!!! When they played, everyone was kind of in a trance at first lol...and then the place just erupted! The vocal chanting with their heavy speed thrash sound was just so new and pure! The next day I quickly ran down to Sam Goody (internet points to those who remember lol) and bought the CD "Soul of a New Machine" One of my favorite shows of all time!

Regarding the lyrics: The album that this song is from is a concept album that tells a science fiction story about a man and his struggles with - and revolt against - a corrupt machine-lead government. Each song acts like a chapter from his life. This is the first song from the album, and as such is the first chapter of the story. in which the main character sees the evils of the opressive government and decides that enough is enough, he must fight and he's got nothing to lose. "I've got no more goddamn regrets, I've got no more goddamn respect"

And demanufacture was released in 1995. They were around in the very, very late 80s under the name ulceration. They changed their name in the early 90s. they originally recorded their album "concrete" which was supposed to be their first album. but it was never released due to lawsuits or somehow losing their music etc. So they recorded their "first" (if you don't count concrete. Nobody does even me.) album soul of a new machine which was one heavy fucking record.

It comes from all the machine sound effects they incorporate and Dino's guitar style. When Demanufacture dropped NIN and Trent Reznor were really big with that kind of thing and FF sort of got lumped in with the industrial bands although they're as metal as you can get.

One of the songs from this album "Zero Signal" even made it as the Scorpion vs Johnny Cage fight in the 1995 Mortal Kombat movie. They are one if the few bands that have never really lost their touch, and you can listen to any song off their most recent album "Genexus", and hear that same "hunger" over 20 years after this masterpiece of the album. They were super nice and really flattered that their music had inspired someone to draw a comic. The story, unfortunately was never finished.
