People may well have valid concerns regarding Dino, but let’s get some hard facts (not opinions or gut feelings) clear on the actual timeline and Burton’s fluctuating relationship with Extreme Metal. In 2002, after Digimortal, he quit the band on account of two things: he claimed not to like this sort of music and also had problems with Dino. Even Raymond did an interview back then where he slammed Dino. Meanwhile, Dino basically shrugged it off and said Burton’s heart wasn’t into it and that he’s over 30 and this sort of music and energy doesn’t appeal to him. Burton’s new project, Ascension of the Watchers (a very different genre) had its first tracks released. Then around 2003, Burton, Christian, and Raymond began working on Fear Factory material again while keeping Dino out of the project. This resulted in the release of Archetype, which some people consider a solid return to form using the Demanufacture formula. Great album, really. Some subtle attacks on Dino in said album. Over and above that, it showed that Christian is an amazing guitarist who can faithfully compose guitar parts in the Fear Factory formula and in a unique and distinctly tight technical manner. Then in 2005, there was the awkwardly produced produced, and somewhat experimental Transgression. This ended up being divisive but not an outright bad album as many also liked the raw sound. Though both Christian and Burton don’t reflect back favourably on how that album turned out. And then suddenly, just after some live touring in 2006, Burton remodels himself and does an interview about how he wanted to “escape Fear Factory”. How he doesn’t like being engaged with that kind of aggression and hate, and that Ascension of the Watchers allowed him to free himself from Fear Factory. Things go quiet for a while while Christian and Raymond do their own thing. And then in 2009/2010, Burton is back with Dino, who he has mended the bridge with, while completely locking out Christian and Raymond from the band. There are weird public statements from Burton about how Fear Factory needed a course correction and to function as a proper business. Guess he wasn’t really trying to escape it? They go on to release Mechanized, which I think is Fear Factory’s most aggressive and best album to date. Great album, but off a very strange and shady backstory. Raymond does an interview around this time simply saying that he has no idea what’s going on but that he and Christian also have rights to the Fear Factory name, so, in theory, there are technically two Fear Factory bands. Since then, there have been plenty of lineup changes with Burton and Dino being the core members and then that dynamic falling apart due to claims of lawsuit tension with Christian and Raymond right before the release of the last album, Aggression Continuum. Again, this was followed by cryptic claims by Burton about finding Dino untrustworthy and opportunistic; how he doesn’t trust any of them and doesn’t want to be involved in such musical endeavours because he has, once again, changed. So what’s the emerging pattern throughout all this? 1. Burton appears to go through phases where he genuinely doesn’t like this sort of music and tends to retreat to his softer, experimental rock projects. He makes very convincing cases every time about how he has changed or had some sort of creative epiphany, only to return later and often make even heavier and aggressive sounding records with Fear Factory under any lineup. Needless to say, he comes across as being quite fickle on this front, but perhaps there are more complex reasons at play. 2. Dino was kept out of the band for at least 7-ish years, and never tried to impose himself or engage in lawsuits during that time. He moved on with his other metal projects, which-regardless of whether one likes his character or not-is no surprise as he is a very distinguished song writer and guitarist. 3. In the context of Fear Factory, there do appear to be some hints of various people (not just Burton, Christian and Raymond) not being able to function consistently with Dino. The cold dismissals of both Byron Stroud and Gene Hoglan being rather alarming examples of this issue. Though again, we don’t have have a lot of details here and perhaps the picture is considerably more complicated. Perhaps Burton has something to account for here as well. The rest is entirely speculation.

I can say firsthand from a substantial timeline of experience, Burt and Dino are both excellent, creative, empathic, ridiculously so fuckin cool, and very strong-souled artists. The number of years between them and the energy of so many collectively creative years surely manifests equally powerful emotions. Can't discount the personal pride as well, as caustic as it can be (deadly sin, they say). The most powerfully close human bonds, when broken, can become equally powerful in aversion. Which really sucks, but I get it. 1) Don't be silly and take "sides" in someone else's personal battles on the internet. It looks stupid. 2) If the obvious critical hits among the former bandmates can be felt by the fans, imagine the emotional blows the artists feel themselves. 3) Love these guys for the years of music, many many seriously fun times, insane nostalgia, and future iconic music to come.

I actually met Burton around the time he left FF. He ended up staying a few days in a hotel an hour from where I live and ended up doing an instore signing at a record store I’ve gone to several times. I didn’t really get why he left/wasn’t in the band, I didn’t really question it either, I was just happy to see him, even though I knew Burton wasn’t in FF anymore. I met him and his wife, both great people, had 3 pictures with him and got my FF shirt and patch signed.

The fact is, Burton IS Fear Factory, his iconic vocals is what set the band apart from all the other bands in the pile. Its like how Journey is still going these days, but without Steve Perry pretty much nobody cares. Burton Bell is to Metal what Steve Perry was to 80s Rock. There are just some vocalists who are THAT important, that if you try to imagine their band without them, you just cant.

In metal we have a very unreasonable expectation for bands to be "forever together". Most marriages don't last this long, people inevitably change through the years, gaining interests, losing interests. It's totally normal he's out, but this is also a new chance to change a little bit, to experiment. I wish Dino all the best.

I can totally relate to fans being stuck in a moment in time and never being happy with the new material. Those people have strong "peaked in high school" energy and I don't know if you can call them real fans. They're just putting the responsibility on YOU to relive the best moment of THEIR lives.

did he start suing because they didnt want to do what he wants? so he sued to get full control. never says why the lawsuits happened.
@furnitureconsortium2 жыл бұрын
@@ponrix the lawsuits came from Christian (bass player 1994-2001, guitar player 2002-2009) and Ray (original drummer and co-founder of the band) for the band reconvening with Dino & Burton with a new drummer and Byron Stroud (bass player when Christian switched to guitar). Ray & Christian still had 25% interest in the band when the re-boot happened in 2009. They felt cut out and wanted to either all convene as they were or to stop Dino & Burton from using the Fear Factory name......more or less anyway, that's what the crux of the lawsuits were about. Christian, especially, wanted to reform the "classic" lineup of Fear Factory with him, Ray, Dino, and Burton. Funny thing is, he said this in interviews as the lawsuits were ongoing! What Dino is conveniently leaving out in this interview is that at some point last year, he bought the Fear Factory name and likeness 100%, essentially cutting out Burton from any share in the band, at least from a business perspective. It's now a similar situation that Black Sabbath found themselves in back in the mid-1980's when Tony Iommi owned 100% of the Black Sabbath name. In Iommi's defense, he was the only member of that band to never quit or leave the band for any reason. If there was one person deserving of 100% ownership of Sabbath, it was Iommi. Anyway, with Dino's strong-arming of the band name, I think that was the last straw for Burton coupled with all of the money he's spent defending the lawsuits against them. I think he was just fed up with everything. I can't say I blame him for leaving, but as a Fear Factory fan for over 20+ years, it's really sad to see. As of now, Dino has hired a new singer and we'll have to wait until the next Fear Factory album for the singer to be revealed. I'll tell you one thing, Burton is going to cast a huge shadow over anybody that Dino brings in to replace him. I don't see it ending well for the band. The chances of a classic lineup era reunion is pretty much well....obsolete (pun intended). I think there's a better chance of the Gallagher brothers making up and reforming Oasis after nearly 15 years of acrimony than I do of a Fear Factory reunion with Dino, Burton, Christian, and Ray.

Dino will appreciate this. “Our species is the only creative species, and it has only one creative instrument, the individual mind and spirit of man. Nothing was ever created by two men. There are no good collaborations, whether in music, in art, in poetry, in mathematics, in philosophy. Once the miracle of creation has taken place, the group can build and extend it, but the group never invents anything. The preciousness lies in the lonely mind of a man.” ― John Steinbeck, East of Eden

I went to a recent fear factory show with the new lineup and after the show they had a signing booth for anyone who purchased merch to get it signed right there by all the band members. Anyways one guy approached Dino with a paper ticket of the concert that day, Dino replied to him to read the sign- that he had to buy merch to get it signed. This guy spends his hard earned money to listen to you, wants his ticket signed and you tell him to spend more money? I almost couldn't believe it but watching this video beforehand essentially proved to me that he was more than likely the problematic one in the band's dissolvement.

Like Dino or not, facts are facts, Dino has always been the backbone of FF. Even when he wasn't in the band, Christian just copied what Dino was doing, yeah they did a decent album without him by copying his template and guitar playing, not a huge feat. Without FF, Dino makes great music, the two Asesino and Divine Heresy albums are awesome, what are the others doing? Nothing worth mentioning in an honest conversation. He's absolutely right here, some people are leaders and some are followers. Without FF, the others can't do anything worthwhile on their own without leeching to another already succesful band.

Talking about guys who only ever knew playing in a band as their bread n butter, wanting to ".....go make pottery" I remember listening to an interview with Dan Spitz , one of the original members of Anthrax talk about leaving because of exactly that, he went on to make Watches! It was interesting to listen to the mindset of people getting older. As a teenager you dream about doing something, you achieve your dream, and then it becomes a job and something you struggle with enthusiasm to keep doing which for those watching as fan dreaming of the same seems insane, but not for the person who once lived the dream only to feel it slowly turn into a torturous nightmare of repetition. I don't know how any band that made it big in their early 20s could still be interested in writing, let alone performing the same songs well into their 50s and beyond. With some bands, you can hear the fire is gone and the quality tank, compared to past efforts was empty a long time ago, Metallica is a classic case and point IMO as much as ill still always find money to see them live again for the umpteenth time.
