Fear and Hunger is an rpg that mashes Undertale unique rpg mechanic concepts while stealing the brutality of the setting of Berserk!
Can we, a Christian gamer, play a game like this and even attempt to come out unscaved and still Christian?

hey man, that diving board was really high, I sweaaaaaaaar😂 I see your point though. I did mention that Fear and Hunger is a exception for me, just like the manga series Beserk. My problem with cult of the lamb is the light heartedness of cult. Again, that's where I'm at with it, but you bring up a funny point.

@@CHRISTIAN_GAMER I see where you're coming from about grappling with media that intends to say something (ie. berserk and FaH) vs something thats plain silly and could be misleading although I don't quite understand the problem with cult of the lamb. All religions and thought based groups are a cult for better or worse. Before you bite my head off for that statement I mean from a purely academic perspective; even early christians considered themselves part of a cult. I thiink the game is just a harmless game that pokes fun at how dumb joining that cult would be and how absurb it sounds when said out loud. TLDR I think cult of the lamb is anti cult in its messaging
@benkai343434

@@fuzzyslippas if all religions are a cult, so is atheism and so is agnosticism, as both of those are belief systems with a central pillar, or, system of belief, this being either idolatry of humanity above all things, idolatry of nature above all things, idolatry of science above all things (atheism), or a lack of desire to remain consistent with your beliefs out of fear of being judged by humanity, which is, in a way, another arm of idolatry of humanity above all things (agnosticism). Taking that into consideration, If the above are cults, that means everything is a cult, and if everything is a cult, then nothing is a cult. The problem here, as I'm sure you've already figured out, is that there's an automatic negative association with the word cult, when all that a cult is is 'reverence towards a person or idea', and comes from the word 'cultus', as in 'to cultivate'. St. Augustine even classifies the Catholic Church as a cult of God, where the primary focus is to 'cultivate love for God'. negative associations with the word cult stem purely from the 1920s and is a modern reinterpretation of an older word for the sake of muddying the waters. As such, the modern interpretation should not carry any water in any discussion. TL:DR 'Cult' should never be used as a derogatory word, because it's not actually a derogatory word. The reason why Cult of the Lamb isn't Christian is because it encourages idolatry, and in a way pokes fun at the concept of the Lamb of God, a central aspect of Christianity. Even if tongue in cheek, that's going to cause more devout Christians (such as myself) to raise an eyebrow and turn away from it. Hope this clears up some things for you, and may the lord bless you on your way.
@fuzzyslippas
@fuzzyslippas 7 ай бұрын
@@benkai343434 totally agree; all of those are cults as well (except agnosticism as their is no beleief system just an agreed lack of understanding). And the reason I brought this up is because yes, there is a negative connotation to the word cult but what usually seperates people distinguishing a cult is not its credibility but usually how long it has been around. Christianity was considered a cult until it became socially acceptable. While i understand the whole idolitry thing, I think you're putting way too much meaning and an agenda on a game that has neither. In fact, it probably has an overall positive view of christianity while Fear and Hunger is a scathing critizism.
@fuzzyslippas
@fuzzyslippas 7 ай бұрын
@@benkai343434 while i do agree that those are also cults, I also see that you fundamentally misunderstand atheism, agnosticism, and scientism. What you described as "idolatry of science above all things" is actually called scientism. Atheism is the beleif that there is no god, and just because we can't explain some things yet, doesn't mean god had anything to do. Agnosticism Is just open minded for whatever is out there to do its thing. The only one of these beleif systems that. The problem here is that the modern use of the word cult is from christians often used to discredit non christian beliefs. "The reason why Cult of the Lamb isn't Christian is because it encourages idolatry, and in a way pokes fun at the concept of the Lamb of God, a central aspect of Christianity." I know exactly why this games isn't christian; It would take a real dummy not to understand just from the title. "Even if tongue in cheek, that's going to cause more devout Christians (such as myself) to raise an eyebrow and turn away from it." M argument was that the creators (successfully) banked on your self rightous indignation over what is ultimately a pretty silly game to sell more copies to people who get off on reactions. Its like satanism; they don't believe in god or satan, they're atheists. They're just so popular because they chose a symbol to spark indignation from their opposition and you fed into it

good job noticing the Berserk inspirations. I'd say, even if you are christian, there's some value to consuming Berserk AND F&H, for similar reasons. I'm no longer religious, but I found the philosophies in both stories to be pretty christian-friendly, compared to something like Cult of the Lamb. There's a strong through line that people _should not_ try to become gods That's because there is danger in becoming something you're not, yes, but also because there is something valuable that is lost when someone gives up there humanity, even if it is pursuit of something "greater." There's value in suffering, and continuing to face the hardships of life head-on, even in the face of relentless strife. That's not too far off from some of Christ's teachings. Of course, there's also the idea that gods are, in some sense, too alien and too indifferent to suffering to spend any time interacting with them, which goes against what Christians (and many other religious people) are about. But there's enough in these stories for some Christians to find good perspectives, depending on how they feel about more sensitive subjects. @@CHRISTIAN_GAMER

@@CHRISTIAN_GAMER Alll-mer is also credited as being the "savior of mankind" in the world of fear and hunger, being, if I remember right, the one man who ascended to godhood. It's a pretty cool interpretation tbh it kinda takes a lovecraftian bloodborne approach where gods can be both dead and alive at once, like how you can pray to alll-mer, and he can bless you with items and spells, even though you can find his literal corpse in the lower levels of the dungeon.

The point about nudity in Fear & Hunger being about rawness of humanity is interesting point, but another review/analysis put it even better, I think. In our day to day lives, we wear clothes. We see other people wearing clothes. In most cultures around the world, people are clothed, and that gives us connection to them, and gives us certain expectations of social norms that they conform to. But in Fear & Hunger many of the denizens of the dungeon are nude, or don't cover their privates. This makes them seem alien to us, and makes us think of what could have lead them to situation like this. It was obviously a conscious choice, since people who are new to dungeon and haven't lost themselves to madness yet do dress normally. ...Of course there's characters like Ragnvaldr, whose outfit is pretty revealing, but he embodies the barbarian archetype, so even then I think we accept the way he is. And his actions in the dungeon are quite noble. But yeah, fantastic game. Personally I prefer the sequel, Termina, since that feels more like adventure game, with heavier focus on characters.
@bizznick444joe7
@bizznick444joe7 7 ай бұрын
There is information you can find about the game found in the books you find in the dungeon and comes down to how you interpret them you can get it right or wrong. It's like literally reading the Bible. What fear you start out with is randomly given to you on character creation. You take more damage from enemies of that type and also have a lower chance of landing a hit on them.
@VodkaVodoka
@VodkaVodoka 7 ай бұрын
Yeah, for example if you take the front door to the dungeon, you were quickly find a book that explains all the phobias. I really like it when games explain stuff like that in-setting. It also clues the player in on that they should be reading the books. ...But having said that, I don't think there is a book that properly explains all the status ailments, like what they do, what causes them and how to cure them. When I started playing, I really would have appreciated knowing that infected legs will kill me if not treated or amputated.

Hey, I've watched about half of this video since yesterday, and I'm finishing it tonight, but I couldn't wait to ask: Did you notice the inspirations from Gnosticism in F&H? Some other commenters pointed out that Alll-Mer is basically Jesus in this game, but I wanted to add that most of the symbolism for Jesus in All-Mer is actually borrowing from Gnostic texts, which would be considered heretical by most Christians nowadays. Again, it's only inspired, and some elements actually just come from regular Christian traditions, but if you feel up to it I'd love to hear your opinions on the game's tackling of those interpretations of the bible. I'm not well-versed enough to explain this on my own, but there's a video from this creator, Mauthe Doog, where he explains both F&H and F&H2: Termina, and goes into detail about how Gnosticism is portrayed in the games: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pF7ZdIuleqyWgZY I understand if you don't feel like speaking on this, but I would value hearing your perspective on it. Thanks either way 😊

Hmmm... now this is a interesting channel, see this more "puritan" conversation toward this media (don't take this as a jab is just my limited knowledge of the english vocabulary this how I cna best describe), because I knew and grew around christian people more of the catholic variety that could seen more "hardcore" if I put in comparison to some American Christian I see online or Evangelicas in my country They go more like "let kid and teen be them but talk like they are adults" if they witness cruelty or something bad you explain why it frown upon and how this happens, no need to go graphical with social political and historical details just explain this is Truth and Reality and here is how we try to deal with it and why, just like how you explain Berserk, this can conflict to some modern ideas even more when you make them objective and not subjective (the Gnoticism still runs strong and not going away so soon) New parents should take this approach in my opnion, even more now that the current MO is not hiding info and truth but oversaturating and desensitizing to it with "sutff", making people care for the most freivolous things exange truth for covinience and self assertion, for me is why some christian people attach to works like Souls games, Some more "mature" Manga (quotation because manga is for everyone is just a target demographic and mature manga can be very chieldish and just edgy), a lot will just complain is has gore, sex, nudity, etc. but that is just a surface look this is like looking in verses of the bible and saying isn't christian like because describes and depicts death, torture, slavery and other stuff, you need to listen, observe, absorb and learn, they see their ideias put in pratice and in a struggle and they exercise it and overcome it But I do adimit that I want to slap a mofo if I see another image of Jesus blessing Guts was funny in the first 100 but now people are taking the joke too seriously and not seeing as one hahah
