I agree, I think men and women may have differing reasons for fearing intimacy. For men it may be more of a fear of rejection because they tend to be the ones generally persuing the woman. Women seem to want to protect themselves from being hurt by getting too close with the wrong person, so they can be fearful to go forward with intimacy until trust is developed.

I thnk people are quick to accuse one as having a fear of intimacy, but many times, that person is seeing red flags, and therefore, doesn't want to see the intimacy through. Also, many seem to suggest that the other person is "normal," when they're NOT. Listening to your intuition is your best protection.

Totally avoidant! Can completely relate. Too many emotionally unavailable people (many of the narcissistic ilk) in my life made me dependent almost completely on myself to the point that if I'm asking for help, I may literally be drowning. Once you identify one narc in your life, you realize you've had many around you with a Cluster-B personality disorder over your lifetime. So, then, the question becomes how do you prove to yourself not everyone is an emotional manipulator and allow vulnerability with safe people only? Where are these precious, amazing people and how do you find them and connect with them when it seems you have a narc target on your forehead?

I was a people pleaser until I realized it wasn't being reciprocated but I was never pathetic. Contrary to what many who subscribe to the Law of Attraction believe, life presents you with a little bit of everything. It presents you with what you are, the opposite of what you are and anything in between. It's up to us to decide what we'll tolerate. I have decided I will not tolerate abuse or disrespect. Those who offer disrespect when they have the option to offer compassion are the pathetic ones. Those who return criticism with compassion are the powerful ones.

Self parenting! When I was in my later 20's through my 30's and into my 40's. I realized I was very very wounded, emothionally/psychologically as well as physically. If someone made a sudden movement near my face, I flinched, and guarded my face. It could be anyone or anywhere. It was reflexive . I knew I needed to protect myself from any more pain, from my parents. I made some powerful decisions, most didn't understand, about distancing from my parents. I knew nothing of this phrase " parenting yourself " , yet I consciously decided to mother myself. I took an elementary school photo of myself, where I saw beauty and innocence , and put in my wallet. It represented my vulnerability, my frailty. If certain feelings came forward, I'd pull the photo out , and use words that affirmed my worthiness of love and comfort. At 61 I still struggle periodically with exposing my feelings and sharing/asking for my needs, only with a partner or for whom I have deeper feelings. It can be so painful, that I tear up. Recently I have found by forcing myself to confront it, which still causes fear, it allows me to feel relief. No matter the outcome.

@@kirstinstrand6292 lol Holy crap, it's like you have no understanding of why narcissists do what they do....or how it differs from why psychopaths do what they do. If that's the case, you're probably also someone who fails to understand the degree of pathological narcissism present in the medical profession....and academia....and any other high achieving profession that people admire. It's like you don't understand the number one thing narcissists NEED (not want...NEED) and what they are in near-constant pursuit of daily: ADMIRATION. When narcissists don't get their daily dose of narcissistic supply (read: public admiration), WATCH OUT. Now, not every narcissist is as emotionally immature as trump, but trump downward spiral that has been spining further and further out of control is what happens when a narcissist in a powerful position of trust LOSES public admiration. The most intelligent and self-aware narcissists are...in short spurts....utterly charming, so that you will gush on about how wonderful they are (because when you compliment, flatter, gush, or commend them it EQUALS narcissistic supply they can lap up). Some of the most toxic narcissists I've met are psychologists who know exactly what to do, and what public persona they should present, in order to garner the most narcissistic supply they can get. But sure, go ahead and make excuses for him based on his profession (lol as if education is a protection against psychopathology that developed...past tense....before someone reached the age of 6 years old?) The more letters someone has behind their name, the more of a yellow flag that should be to observe that individual closesly for charm. Serious academicians are rarely....and I do mean RARELY...charming. They are polite, logical, measured, and can be quite dull (because they're not worried about being liked or admired...they're busy providing information and sharing their knowldge and experience). **narcissistic supply is the clinical term for "admiration from others"

Depends on the person and situation. There can be overly intrusive people, who ask inappropriate questions & that can be a good boundary to set. @QualityRock Productions It is a gesture of kindness if the person you touch is allowed to stop it anytime she/he wants. As a child, I remembered hating being taken in the arms of adults. Because I could not leave and go play until they put me back on the floor. "Wasn't it obvious that I was supposed to like it? Doesn't every child want to be taken in adults arms?". No, not for me. An aunt told me much later, when I was an adult: "When you were a child, only your mother was allowed to take you in her arms". This is consistent with my memories of the time. I knew with my mother that, unlike other adults, she would put me back on the floor whenever I wanted to. As a teenager, I discover how nice it was to hug others, but still didn't like to be hugged. So when I embraced the saying "Don't do to others...", I decided that I would never do that to anybody. So I never hugged anyone again since. It was much later that some female friend asked me with a voice of regret: "But didn't you ever wanted to hug me?". I was speechless I couldn't understand the meaning of it. What? Isn't a man hugging a woman some patriarcal domination game? Do really people, women, children like to be hugged? It took me years to reject the notion of "Don't do to others what you don't like to be done to you" and replace it with "Do to others what THEY want you to do to them". In fact I was always attracted to hugging people, but I forbad it myself for years thinking it was some egoistical, male chauvinistic desire to dominate. And "Don't do to others...". And it took me even more years to finally being able to hug a child for the first time without feeling being a bad, egoistical, domineering a-hole.

Opposite of love which is attraction to/enmeshment with, has been described as 'disgust' which would bring about rejection which results in shame, not feeling good enough. I'm sure that's how Jordan Peterson described it for whatever that's worth. Enjoyed the chat Kyle and Dr Ish, thanks. xxx Have mentioned to my husband his physically abusive non-nurturing mother is at the root of HIS angst and distance. He hated that and shouted at me 'Don't ever bring my mother into this'... she died when he was 16 years old. I suppose he's locked into how he dealt with her behaviour, learned how to manage and box it for his own survival and will not explore and resolve that box he's created. It's not sorted because he wont face the truth of how it's affecting his behaviour towards me. C'est la vie.

2:02 COMPLETELY. I experience this every time. With vulnerability and great intimacy, sex is a physical manifestation of inward depth of connection. Very pleasurable. I love this TOPIC so much. so emotionally healing. I feel seen, heard, known. 20:57 well said Kyle. I am personally attracted to vulnerability and I do say that to my partner when I see it, I make sure my partner is aware.

I believe the term you may be looking for is demisexual. I also see sex/intimacy as a form of communication and connection with my partner.

So many people get stuck in intimate relationships with people who are clearly not good for them that a bit more reservation towards letting people get that close quickly would be advisable.

Exactly. Maybe most people are so insecure that they feel compelled to leap into a relationship because of neediness. It's challenging growing up and growing old.

Thank you Kyle and Doctor Ish! I love this message. Re-parenting and becoming our own parents by close self examination. The core fears of intimacy listed are helpful. I was thinking about this talk and the talk with Dr Ramani on avoidant partners or anxious avoidant attachment styles on medcircle. Listening here at medcircle is a daily joy. Keep up the great work.

Mostly enjoyed this Dr. with the exception of the self nurturing act of striving to keep yourself pure for your future companion. In my opinion....... So many negatives from sexual misuse of ones body. Male or female, from the trauma of an unintended pregnancy to Incurable diseases or just the mental stress of bonding with the wrong person. Just these reasons are enough to one need therapy. You don’t have to agree, I’ve seen it happen to ppl I love and care about.

It’s funny after tough relationships I spent 15yrs myself and actually discovered myself most of things in the video r in myself but new relationship and I have told partner I’ve been through things and how I will avoid if he allows me to and what to do in that moment but he’s very patient person and listens most the time 😂, I already feel the barriers lowered I feel positive about the future so thanks for letting me realise I’m on my way to where I want to be with your video guy’s,,this will help a lot of people.

Hip, Hip Hurray! Lovely d-r ISH!!! Greetings from South London, Brixton from the Bulgarians!!! This is so so real especial in the engineering area....lots of engineers in theirs 50 just realize...that they never had intimacy....I work for BBC and believe me.....they are hundreds of those engineers...wow.....have to explain that to them...this is a whole generation... I was trying to address it but I was not sure what to say about them... Thank you!!!

I was an engineering student. The truth is, engineer types feel nerdy, ugly, misunderstood and isolated from a supermajority of society because we actually are some of the smartest people but the Hollywoodization of culture and television propagandists take advantage of our people's psychology by way of social programmification. With an engineering mind, there is not a single problem in the entire world whose parts cannot be disambiguated or simplified into something we can comprehend for ourselves. Many engineer types, like myself, are some of the most depressed people in society because our intellect is seen as a 'threat' to the masses because of their 'lack' of it. This is exactly why Elon Musk was bullied in South Africa
