Something I don't like to admit is that even though I've been using watercolor for 30 years, I _still_ find myself feeling like I've forgotten everything I know whenever I begin a new piece. I agree with the kid's supplies versus more advanced supplies. I see parents constantly buying their kid's supplies at the Dollar Store or bargain stores. Even high school kids come into class with their "new" set that I look at and cringe. I've brought my Daniel Smith sets into the classroom to let students play with and the look on their faces is like their touching gold for the first time. Wild, right? Good to hear this conversation today! Thank you, Jennifer and hope 2019 is starting off great for you and your family! Cheers! ;)

Yes! Creative kids always get the crappiest watercolor paints! They are impossible to use & it really is so discouraging. I am growing to love watercolors, now.. but I really was so afraid of them. I think the most intimidating thing about them, to me, is that you have to plan ahead with every light & shadow. You have to know what stays white before you ever start. There is no erasing or painting over (like with pencils or oils)

A large part of my own fear of the medium is that I am not accustomed to being patient. Working in layers is something I am not used to. Waiting for the layers to dry before adding another color is something that is hard for me because I have to 'finish the drawing then and there' or I leave it and don't come back to it. Not sure if that makes any sense. Love your finished piece. Koalas are adorable.

First of all, I think the new setup and editing thing is very natural and personal and I love it. Once you figure out the blurry thing it'll be perfect. Although I didn't mind too much so no worries! You know, I think a LOT of what had me not liking watercolor in the beginning was using the wrong supplies. Especially the wrong paper. This past year I've been experimenting more with watercolor and having the right supplies, including paper that didn't warp really helped. I also think I was put off by how art teachers NEVER let you add highlights when it was done. We were also taught to plan our hightlights ahead of time and use masking fluid and plan them ahead of time and made to feel like anything else was cheating. Meanwhile, I'm seeing you go over your piece with a gel pen. I've personally gone over my work with acrylics. I don't know why art teachers go so hard with those rules because personally that's just not an intuitive way to work. I get that you should go light with the paint to make certain areas lighter, but those little shiny highlights are just not worth planning around to me when you can just go in and add a little pop of white, you know? I think other than that, it's just not that forgiving. Other paints you can go over mistakes. Pencils you can erase. Digital you can undo or paint over. Watercolor, marker and pen are honestly the most terrifying mediums to me. But that said, getting used to inking made me way less scared of watercolor. I think the biggest hurdle is getting people to not be afraid to experiment and make mistakes and to just slow down and plan ahead more. I really look forward to your series on Skillshare btw!!!

Koala turned out cute. I think you hit the nail on the head with the control thing. I think that all of us practice precision with a pencil and pen. We are all taught to make nice neat lines on a page and that our handwriting must be neat and legible (boy have I failed that one), and that makes a flowing medium like watercolor intimidating. It's water. It goes where it wants to go, it moves and flows and we are not taught to handle a brush. It struck me as you were lightly lifting some of the color from the leaf under the Koala's tail how effortless you make it look. Your hand glides across the page, depositing color and it's so smooth and seamless. I realize that a lot of that is practice but that is intimidating to someone new. Because then they try it, nothing goes as expected. I think the other part is thinking in layers of color. With colored pencil, as an example, you leave spaces for lighter colors or you start with lighter colors and build towards darker and you overlap to some degree. But with water color you have to think of colors in layers. You have to think transparency. Ok...I am laying down a blue and I will lay down a pink over that and what will that look like. I think that is harder to grasp than say a pencil where you work in patches. These are the things I can think of right off the top of my head.

I've been wanting to invest in a secondary camera to make the filming process easier for myself, and while it may be frustrating that your footage came out a bit blurry I'm grateful you've broken this ground and taken this hit for any of us who are also considering multi-camera stuff. Just one unforeseen speed bump to now be aware of. You mentioned the lighting, and I think this video is brighter than normal so it's great! UGH. THAT brush. When I was a teacher, I bought all the art supplies for the entire school because lol, zero budget. Despite scraping by myself, I STILL went out of my way to buy a boatload of "seconds" brushes from Dick Blick that had actual bristles because I wanted my kids to have their best chance possible for success. .....Then they broke and stole almost all of them and I started to understand why so many teachers just stick with the default crappy brushes. Le sigh. "Those" brushes are heckin' traumatic though, totally agree!

I've seen a few of the artists I watch saying lately that watercolor was scary for them. I feel way more intimidated by every other paint medium, watercolor always felt really safe for me because you can change the colors so easily and you can just sop up the color for the most part if you make a mistake! The only thing that ever bothered me was figuring out the right kind of paper to use and how much water will make it get all wrinkly lol

Honestly I don't think the quality of the paint affects the fun unless they are super weak. What I lacked in school was learning about mixing and actually practising it. We are told: Red and yellow make orange but instead of mixing it ourselves we use the pre-made orange from the set to fill the colour wheel. I treated professional watercolours the same way when I got some and I was disappointed because the colours looked weird and I missed a lot of convenience colours. I agree with the brushes though, and the paper is even more important. In school we were given student grade colours and one sheet of water colour paper for one piece. The curriculum at the time was so packed we spent two weeks on a medium and would turn to another one, instead on focussing on basics like mixing or values and how to apply them in various media. While we had to do a practise piece with our cheap colours and paper and we did get to know the basic water colour techniques and then had to do the final piece with better materials... I don't have the feeling I learned anything from it

I’m just getting into watercolor after years of what might be consider as an “artistic rut.” I was doing mostly pen and ink doodles for a very long time due to not having any space for anything else. Also my field of “expertise,” so to speak, has been in soft pastels and colored pencils. Going from that to watercolors is quite the transition. I’ve mostly just been having fun with playing around with the colors on paper and making pretty backgrounds. My hesitance, I’m finding, is in my drawing skills. It’s been a really long time since I’ve really put them to use. Thoughts of “what if I can’t draw like I use to,” start filling my head and I find that I can’t even put the pencil to the paper. It’s frustrating for sure, but how will I know if I don’t try, right? Just have to bite the bullet and get to it!

Hi there! I love your koala! Very sweet. 😊 I've been using watercolor for a couple years now.. And to this day I still experience a certain amount of fear and anxiety as I begin to paint. It is as I sit with a light sketch upon a page, and I see all of the white.. Knowing it is just waiting for color.. And it's up to me to put it in the "right spot". Heh.. 😆 I'm facing it today as I work on my current painting.. And as I go back to it I try to embrace that it's only a piece of paper.. I can always start over! But I love watercolor and only want to continue improving. Thank you for sharing! 💜👍

For me, it's the lack of contol and being locked into working light to dark. Colored Pencil was my medium of choice for a very long time.

I totally agree about what you were saying with the student/children's sets of paint. I have 3 daughters, and ive been taking advantage of their interest in painting to be able to do some of my own painting! I can't stand watching them use crappy brushes, chalky pale paints, and flimsy paper that wets and tears. My husband laughs at me, it bothers me so much. I have them using my old tole painting brushes, over used Loew Cornells. They're using discount Michael's watercolor paper, or matboard scraps from the framing store. I worried that I'd end up spending a mint on paper, but honestly with good supplies, my 7 year old will work on the same painting for ages. She can work and rework things because the paper doesnt disintegrate. She's painting with my old Reeves student palette. The two younger ones are using the crayola paint (because washability is important) but paper and brushes that don't suck are a must. This is why I feel like beginners struggle so much! Even kids can't learn good skills with bad supplies. It's totally worth it to begin with good supplies.

Always a pleasure to watch you paint :) (Judging by my experience) I feel like a lot of school art courses tend to have a heavy focus on acrylic paints. When we did watercolor I hated it because I fell back on techniques used with acrylic (which obviously wont work with watercolor) since we didnt get a lot of instruction. If it wasn't for the KZbin art community, I probably wouldn't have tried watercolor again.

Hi Jennifer, I actually found you on an app that we both use and I love your work. I was looking at many different peoples posts and their work. I’m not being mean when I say this but you by far were the BEST. With that said please follow me so I can see what you’re doing. My question today is do you like water brushes or paint brushes? I just bought a water brush and it intimidates me. You’ll know me by reading the comments on the app. I’m a beginner whose afraid to start painting. I can draw out my subject however when it comes to the actual painting of it I freeze. It could be because I’m using Arches paper who knows. How do I get out of this slump I’m in. I’m a perfectionist so that doesn’t help matters. I also belong to two watercolor groups on Facebook however I’ll never post a pic. It will look like a child did it compared to what others post help!! What’s wrong with me? Who knows. Looking forward to seeing you on the app we both belong to and learning more as well as your KZbin channel. Janis 💞💞💞💞💞💞💞
