28:00 Idk if James or Chelsea will see this, but the “body falling apart in the tub” James was probably thing is of is the disappearance of Elisa Lam, a real (unaliving) case where Elisa (who suffered from mental illness and depression) went to a hotel by herself and an infamous elevator security camera shows her trying to “hide from something or someone. Several weeks later her dead body was found in the water tank at the roof of the building rotting in the water, the residents of the hotel stating they were finding weird things in the water and it was black in coloration. It’s a super tragic and bizzare story, definitely reccomend The Red Thread’s video about it since they go over theories and Elisa’s life before her death.

Regarding reality disaster shows, I think it’s referring to shows that were just compilations of disasters caught on tape. Fox used to air them all the time. They would show videos of planes crashing into crowds at air shows where dozens of people died instantly for example. Or people being swept into a flood and eventually drowning. This is the first time in years I’ve thought about it and just realizing how messed up that they would air all of that on prime time.

I assumed it was my bad I didn’t understand what was going on and that I should have paid more attention. Turns out this movie just doesn’t make sense lmao What really gets to me is the potential something like this had, obscure websites on an era when that was fresh and new, pain and suffering being channeled into a website, something I believe Japanese horror movies have used to great effect, clues left by a victim who calls out to its killer in abstract tech, we could have had it all. But no, it’s just a mishmash of spooky things that don’t connect.

I also have seen this movie twice! It might not be the best, but between the face on the poster (which did freak me out as a kid!) and the particular style of the website itself (very early 2000's edgelord 💙🖤) I have a personal soft spot for this one, even if it isn't scary per se. 😅

Of course, it scared the shit out of me, but I think it also came creeping back to inspire my interest in internet horror years later. Needless to say, I was disappointed to find out the movie's bad. (Also, the way to stop people from going to the website is to just say something bad but not paranormal will happen if they do, like their information will get stolen or something.)

The discussion around "do you as the police tell the public not to go to the killer website" is actually handled a little in a similar thriller movie (no ghosts, just bad guys 😔) from 2008 - Untraceable. It does have some pretty gnarly kills though its not explicit (think its a 15). And that also has a weirdly stacked cast. Maybe I should request coverage of it one day because its also that fun brand of 2000's horror trying to tackle early-ish internet/tech culture
