“The Hellbound Heart” is such a quick and fun read. It’s also remarkable how close the original film sticks to it. It’s also a great gateway drug into Clive Barker’s writing style in general. I've long felt like I'm the only person who genuinely likes this movie 🤣 The actual 'Hellworld' video game concept is weakly-presented, but I think the movie tells a strong story that's pretty entertaining and clever. Yes the cenobites act like generic slasher villains, but (until the last scene) that makes a lot of sense in the context of the movie when you find out what's really happening. Lance Henriksen is so good in it too. I've encountered a lot of people baffled by the 'surviving' characters seeing his image at the end, but I've always seen that as establishing that the whole 'saved by the ghost friend' bit didn't really happen and that the 'surviving' characters are merely imagining their escape in a drug-induced haze. It's by far my favorite Hellraiser entry from movies 5-10.
