One of the most surprising CinemaScore's ever for a horror movie, and one that really shows that horror's CS scale is different from other movies, is Hereditary receiving a D+. It opened at just 13m domestically, and would go on to make more than 3x's that (44m).

"I would hate to live in a world where horror was like a Marvel release" Actually, I think we kinda lived through reality in the mid-90s through to the early 00s with the slate of big-budget, action-infused Creature Features like Deep Blue Sea, The Relic, Ananconda, Deep Rising and the Brendan Fraiser version of The Mummy. I'm just not sure where to define the cutoff in this era - You definitely can also count stuff like Jurassic Park 1 and 2 but maybe Tremors doesn't count because it was too low budget and independent.

Another reason horror movies are often so profitable is that they're generally rather cheaply marketed. Especially the recent glut of horror targeted at younger audiences: buy up some digital ads leading up to the premiere and you're set. It's hard to track down exact marketing budgets, but some superhero movies (especially DC in the past) are estimated to spend so much on marketing that even with a huge box office they don't turn a profit. Grabbing attention is so vital now, but so much more difficult. I tend to view Cinemascore as how well audiences were primed by marketing for the movie they ended up seeing. If their expectations were met or exceeded, they give it a positive score. If there was a sudden twist, genre blend, or unhappy ending they hadn't been prepared for, they give it a bad score.

The strikes probably also played havoc with what did well in theaters both because of those wanting to support said strikes mistakenly thinking staying away would help and because it disrupted a bunch of release schedules. Hell, Godzilla Minus One probably wouldn't have been given as wide and extended a release as it got if the Hollywood machine had been running as normal and now it's one of the highest grossing foreign films of all time and there's talk it's even up for several Academy Awards. It's been a hell of a year for us tokusatsu fans.

And somehow that's not even the worst thing he'd done. Lorraine's contract with New Line had a special clause about things that were off limits from being shown. That clause includes depicting them as "engaging in crimes, including sex with minors, child pornography, prostitution or sexual assault". And if you know about Ed, then you know why that was included. To say that the Warren's were trash is an understatement.
