I think we can blame society during that time. I mean I'm not homophobic but I just to point out the facts. The reason why Lucy fell in love with Mina was because they known each since like childhood I guess and Mina was like the only fun and nice person she met in her life. The men she met were either too boring, poor, or spoiled for her liking that with Mina in her life her sexuality shifted. And worse homosexuality wasn't taken lightly during those times. Perhaps maybe if Lucy had met a man who wasn't so boring and spoiled she didn't have to fall for Mina. Like I said I'm not homophobic just pointing out the facts cause thanks to Lucy's problem she was manipulated by Lady Jayne, causing her to make bad mistakes that ruined her relationship with Mina, and being turned at the hands of Dracula. So yeah I would say it was society's fault at that time.

But despite that I totally understand Lucy and how she feels... I am (obviously) gay and its quite usal to fall for the best friend, I think because you spend a lot of time with them, there's a lot physical contact and you like talking with them... I also fell for my (ex) best friend, we were so close and hugged a lot, she was cute and funny and we used to be in sync and all... I don't know when my love for her shifted from platonic to romantic yet they did and suddenly I just wished we hugged even more often... She didn't feel the same and because we sat apart in school due to other reasons even before that we already started drifting apart... after I told her I stayed at her grandparents for a week the second time and I felt like we had a nice time yet it didn't help. She was suddenly friends with the people in my class we used to gossip about and we kinda stopped talking and the the school's were closed and everyone stayed at home. Our lifes completely drifted apart and this year I dont have a class anymore and we just share one subject were she sits in another corner of the room... All in all its definitely painful to be inlove with the beat friend, because you always fear you'll lose them if you tell them, or that they suddenly hate you...

A few things: 1. The writers messed up by having Lucy, a GAY woman, sleep with a man and enjoy it. I'm sorry but that's just plain wrong. 2. They also messed up by cancelling this show after only one season. Would have loved to have seen vampire!Lucy. 3. I'm probably not the only one, but I bet any gay/bi woman watching is most likely the Lucy to their Mina - a straight girl who doesn't return the feelings.
