As The Phantom (Claude Rains) is distracted by her singing, a kidnapped Christine DuBois (Susanna Foster) uses the opportunity to unmask him to discover the true horror of what lies behind the mask!
From Phantom Of The Opera (1943): Talented Christine is unaware that her singing lessons are being funded by a secret admirer, Enrique, a mysterious violinist with a disfigured face. Christine's colleagues become suspicious when mysterious accidents start occurring at the Paris Opera House, as the deaths coincide with her meteoric rise to stardom. Christine's suitors, Raoul and Anatole, brave the dark recesses of the opera house to find the true culprit.

2:33 on should have been the ending with the music swelling for a big finish, the mask and violin in the rubble is such a great tragic shot, also great use of the lullaby theme

Why is only half his face scarred? In the scene where the girl throws a pan of acid at him, it hits his entire face.
@iankelley5114

Claude Rains was against having his whole face covered with an elaborate makeup, so Jack Pierce went through several designs until it met Rains' approval. Also, since this movie came out during WWII, they felt like a full disfigured face would offend wounded veterans. This is also the first POTO that has the Phantom disfigured by some kind of accident, instead of being naturally disfigured like Lon Chaney's Phantom.

@@iankelley5114 True, but at least they were better than what Claude Rains had to offer when he played the Phantom. 🤷‍♂Don't get me wrong but it would have made more sense had Claude Rains turned his face away from the acid so it would only scar 1 side of his face instead of making it look like his face took the entire acid.

@@Haunted_Peru yes i saw the bit where he gets the acid however the Christine's reaction could have been way better if she was supposed to be terrified of the way he looks I also understand this is like 1940s and completely different to the newest movie was Gerard Butler his makeup looked a little bit better because he looks more deformed than just acid burn

For the record I saw this film at 5 years old and his disfigurement actually terrified me. Now I kinda find it funny considering he had a tray of acid thrown at his face that not only should have scarred more than the right side of his face but also should have disfigured his hands as well.
