People in the theater actually fainted at the sight of Dracula's face. Many who'd seen the film made sure that their doors and windows were locked every night and church attendance increased. That's how good of a job Lugosi did.

That final death scream of Renfield's -- "I CAN'T DIE WITH ALL THOSE LIVES ON MY HEAD!" -- is truly bone-chilling. This is a terror of the soul that millions of people have felt through history in the all-too-real world. We don't need vampires for this sort of darkness.

The worst part about it is that Renfield tries to flee and Dracula angrily screams to him "WAIT!" Dracula was going to kill him for his "betrayal." No amount of pleading or begging would save him at that point.

When they revived the play in the 1970's with Frank Langella starring as Dracula on Broadway, the sound effect when Dracula is staked was very much like this, but much louder. The entire audience was shocked!
@delavalmilker
@delavalmilker 3 жыл бұрын
After the premier in 1931, they edited-out most of Dracula's moans when he got staked. Making it much shorter than it is shown here. It was considered too upsetting for audiences of the time. For many years prints of the film only had a slight grunt in the soundtrack. When Universal restored the film, they re-inserted the original "extended" soundtrack.
@DericMyersYT
@DericMyersYT 2 жыл бұрын
I remember seeing it on the SciFi Channel when I was a kid (maybe 94/95) and they didn’t have the moans at all and I don’t remember it implying at all he got staked. I don’t think they had the part where they find the coffins. I legit thought he had got killed by the sun because of what Mina says.

That's why I'm watching this. At 4:24 of this video; without modern special effects, director Tod Browning left the driving of the stake into Dracula's heart to our imagination. Which in my case, is much more graphic and horrifying than any recent remake could ever be.

The time period of this movie was essentially the beginning of the golden age of Hollywood where movies were made almost entirely within a studio. So what you saw was like seeing a play on a stage that allowed you to gaze into a world beyond you. So Bela Lugosi, who was a stage actor in Hungary before coming to the United States, was the right man at the right time. Since he had the ability to inject so much of himself into a character that you couldn’t take your eyes of him. Which is why he was greatest of all to play Dracula. And why his commanding presence, even without speaking, was second to none. l

dark_lord05 - earlier, when Van Helsing is describing Dracula, he states : he has the strength of 10 men....also, in the book, Dracula tears steel bars out of the sanitarium to kill Renfield - different in the movie. Another difference in the novel - Dracula could move about in daylight, but his powers were max during nightime. Resting in the soil of his native land was how he regenerated himself.....like charging the batteries, so to speak. Dracula movies have tended to underplay the supernatural qualities of the “undead”. A Vampire is really only scary when it represents a force outside the laws of the “real” world. Personally, I’d love to see Stephen King tackle the Dracula novel.....his Vampires in Salem’s Lot were truly weird and fantastical.

This film was slow obane and as dull as watching paint dry. Lugosi wasnt a patch on Christopher Lee im afraid. Lugosi took half an hour to say a basic line especially at the start of the film and the OTT acting borders on camp. Christopher Lee truly understood the charisma and noble charm as well as the raging beast when it came to playing the vampire Count. I truly believed in him as Dracula... i have to say Lugosi is just playing the pathos and the lines without understanding any of the Counts inner monologues or motivations or more dangerous bestile qualities. This film has definately NOT aged well at all. However the castle interior sets and Dwight Frye as Renfield were the best thing about the film.

What were they implying when they had Helsing stay behind? They couldn't have known at the time that they'd later make a sequel in which he's caught alone and thought to be a murderer. So what was the original intent?

As far as I know, there was a part that was cut from the conversation with Renfield. Van Helsing promised to save his soul and that's why he stays behind. It was kept in the Spanish version.

Yes, but there was no music in most movies of this era, because when they were originally showed in theaters, the audience would get confused wondering where the orchestra was - like when The Count Basie big band was playing the soundtrack in the deset in Blazing Saddles! 😂😂😂
